Centre vaulted into a first-place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, while Hardin-Simmons and Trinity earned key non-conference wins in week three of south region football action.

Centre defeated upstart Rhodes 21-14 in Danville, Ky., improving to 1-0 in SCAC play and 2-0 on the season. Rhodes dropped to 1-1 in the SCAC and 2-1 overall. Centre returns to action with a trip to Washington & Lee this weekend; Rhodes enjoys a bye week before battling Washington University on Oct. 2.

Hardin-Simmons defeated Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State 38-31 in its 1999 home opener, improving to 2-0 on the season. The Cowboys defeated west region power Wisconsin-Whitewater last week and battle Southwestern (Kan.) this weekend.

Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, claimed a 48-7 victory against Austin to earn its third straight win aginst an ASC opponent. The Tigers open their SCAC slate against DePauw next weekend.

CENTRE 21, RHODES 14: Centre (2-0, 1-0 SCAC) enjoyed a mild surprise, defeating Rhodes (2-1, 1-1 SCAC) by a touchdown in its SCAC opener.

Senior running back Kevin Chapman rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries, scoring two touchdowns, to propel the Colonels offense. Senior linebacker Adam Browning was named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 18 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in the victory. Rhodes dropped to 1-1 in SCAC play, previously defeating DePauw 33-14 in Greencastle.

HARDIN-SIMMONS 38, OKLA. PANHANDLE STATE 31: No. 11 Hardin-Simmons (2-0) defeated a Divison II foe on its home turf to remain undefeated on the 1999 campaign.

Senior quarterback Brad Boyd completed 26 of 34 passing attempts for 402 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Cowboys to their second consecutive impressive victory.

TRINITY 48, AUSTIN 7: Trinity (3-0) quarterback Michael Burton completed 14 of 20 passes for 224 yards and five touchdowns to lift the Tigers to a 48-7 victory against Austin (1-2) in an inter-conference battle. Burton compiled an efficiency rating of 236.6 in the contest and tied his own school record of five touchdown passes set against McMurry in 1998.

Sophomore linebacker Casey Doran added 13 tackles in just 30 plays to pace the Trinity defense.

DEPAUW 27, HOPE 21: DePauw (1-2) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to claim a come-from-behind victory over MIAA member Hope in Michigan. Quarterback Kurt Hare rallied the Tigers by completing 23 of 37 passes for 288 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Joe Schoen madeeight receptions for 152 yards to lead the Tiger receivers.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 38, BELHAVEN 21: Mississippi College (2-0) relied on the efforts of freshman quarterback Payton Perrett to remain undefeated in non-conference play. Perrett earned ASC Offensive Player of the Week honors after completing 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns. He tied a school record for touchdown passes in a game in the victory.

WASHINGTON U. 24, WABASH 20: Washington U. (2-1) rallied from a 20-12 third-quarter deficit to defeat Wabash in Crawfordsville. Special teams propelled the Bears to the victory, as Cory Snyder returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Then, Washington U. recovered a blocked punt at the one-yard line to set up the game-winning score.

DAVIDSON 21, SEWANEE 0: The Sewanee (2-1) defense offered a stiff challenge for Division I-AA Davidson, as the Tigers fell 21-0. Sophomore linebacker Bart Pride recorded 13 tackles, six unassisted, to pace Sewanee.

CHICAGO 22, ROSE-HULMAN 20: Chicago withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by Rose-Hulman (0-3) to earn its first victory of the season. Senior quarterback Eric Hyten scampered 71 yards to set up a Rose-Hulman touchdown with 2:10 remaining, and the Engineers earned one final possession with a chance to win. Hyten endured sacks on third and fourth down to end the final drive.

MARYVILLE 27, STILLMAN 6: Maryville (1-1) handed Stillman (0-3) its third consecutive defeat in its first football season in more than 30 years, in a battle of independents.

TRINITY (3-0) opens defense of its SCAC championship with a conference clash against 1998 second-place finisher DEPAUW (1-2) ... HARDIN-SIMMONS (2-0) concludes its preseason schedule with a matchup against Southwestern (Kan.) ... MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE (2-0) hits the road for a challenging matchup with Division I-AA Jacksonville ... HOWARD PAYNE (1-1) travels to California for a matchup with Chapman, a squad that defeated Millsaps 37-3 earlier this season ... SUL ROSS STATE (1-1) also prepares for a difficult matchup, traveling to Division II Western New Mexico ... CENTRE (2-0) looks to continue its success and match its 1998 victory total at Washington & Lee ... MILLSAPS (1-1) takes a lengthy road trip to battle Colorado College ... ROSE-HULMAN (0-3) travels to Kalamazoo, as two traditionally solid programs battle for their first win of the season ...WASHINGTON U. (2-1) opens its UAA schedule at Case Western Reserve.
