Trinity's 44 makes Tigers 4-0

Trinity and Hardin-Simmons remained unblemished and atop their conferences, while Mississippi College rallied to stay undefeated in Week Four of South Region football action.
Trinity bested Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival DePauw 44-0 in San Antonio, improving to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in SCAC play. Hardin-Simmons and Mississippi College both moved to 3-0 and atop the ASC standings. The Cowboys defeated Southwestern (Kan.) College 35-9, and the Choctaws rallied for a 16-13 road victory against I-AA Jacksonville.
The weekend was historic for Mary Hardin-Baylor and Rose-Hulman. The Crusaders established four school records in their first shutout in school history, a 48-0 victory against Southwestern Assemblies of God.
Rose-Hulman earned its first win for rookie head coach Russ Mollet in a 20-15 victory at Kalamazoo College.

TRINITY 44, DePAUW 0: Trinity (4-0, 1-0 SCAC) scored 14 first quarter points and jumped out to a 30-0 halftime lead to defeat DePauw (1-3, 0-2 SCAC) in San Antonio. Senior quarterback Michael Burton tallied 295 passing yards and two touchdowns in the victory, while senior running back Damond Garza churned out 119 yards on 22 carries. The Trinity defense held DePauw to just 42 yards and 71 yards passing in recording its first shutout of the season.
HARDIN-SIMMONS 35, SOUTHWESTERN (KAN.) 9: Hardin-Simmons (3-0) topped the seventh-ranked team in the NAIA to remain undefeated. Senior running back Patrick Baca rushed for 134 yards and scored two first-half touchdowns to give the Cowboys a solid start. The game was delayed by 40 minutes due to lightning in the Dallas area.
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 16, JACKSONVILLE 13: Mississippi College rallied from a third-quarter deficit to defeat Division I-AA Jacksonville by three points in northern Florida. Freshman quarterback Ben Reed came off the bench to replace fellow freshman Payton Parrett and rallied the Choctaws to victory, directing a 68-yard third-quarter drive that led Mississippi College to the victory. Reed completed nine passes for 67 yards and one touchdown in the game.

MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR 48, SW ASSEMBLIES OF GOD 0: Mary Hardin-Baylor (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season in convincing style against Southwest Assemblies of God. The Crusaders racked up school records for points scored (48), rushing yards (373) and total offense (533) while recording its first shutout in school history.
ROSE-HULMAN 20, KALAMAZOO 15: Rose-Hulman (1-3) picked up its first victory for head coach Russ Mollet in a road win at Kalamazoo. Senior quarterback Eric Hyten became the second Rose-Hulman football player to rush for 3,000 yards in a career with 88 yards. Hyten completed 12 of 20 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown in the victory.
WASHINGTON U. 42, CASE WESTERN RESERVE 7: Washington University (3-1, 1-0 UAA) controlled play from the outset to defeat Case Western Reserve in its University Athletic Association opener.
WASHINGTON & LEE 23, CENTRE 17: Centre (2-1, 1-0 SCAC) jumped out to a 10-0 lead but failed to hold on and earn a road victory at Washington & Lee. The game counted as a conference game for the Generals, due to their inability to schedule Catholic, a recent entrant into the ODAC. Sophomore quarterback Drew Mildren completed 20 of 35 passes for 219 yards in a losing effort.
COLORADO COLLEGE 40, MILLSAPS 37: Millsaps (1-2) fell three points short in a furious second-half comeback at Colorado College. The Majors trailed 34-13 at halftime and, despite 149 rushing yards and three touchdowns from running back Mike McKenzie, dropped a three-point heartbreaker.
WESTERN NEW MEXICO 47, SUL ROSS STATE 12: Division II Western New Mexico handled Sul Ross State (1-2) on its home turf to earn the victory.
CHAPMAN 29, HOWARD PAYNE 20: Stanley Villanueva pitched two touchdown passes and Ed Romo kicked three field goals in three attempts for Chapman (2-1). With Richard Green rushing for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, Howard Payne (1-2) outrushed Chapman 328 to 125 and led in total offense, 416 to 339. Villanueva completed 15 of 23 for 214 yards with no interceptions.

ASC conference action kicks off with four league matchups, highlighted by a showdown between MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE (3-0) and HOWARD PAYNE (1-2)... Other contests include preseason favorite McMURRY (2-1) battling a confident MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR (1-2) and HARDIN-SIMMONS (3-0) hosting SUL ROSS STATE (1-2)... McMURRY returns to action this week after two bye weeks. McMurry battled the Air Force junior varsity squad last weekend as a tune-up for its ASC schedule... STILLMAN (1-3) hosts NAIA member Bethel (Tenn.) in search of its second consecutive victory after reinstating football this season.
