Upstate New York Notes (updated Sept. 7) Most Open This Weekend By Mike Warwick, Ithaca SID All but two of Upstate New Yorks 13 schools will be in action this weekend (Hamilton, a member of the NESCAC, does not open until Sept. 25; Buffalo State opened last Saturday). Two teams have already begun the 1999 season (Buffalo State beat Division I-AA Robert Morris 32-20 and Hartwick was upset by Kings 28-18). Hartwick, who lost just one regular-season game last fall, dropped its opener 28-18 to visiting Kings. The Hawks led 10-0 before giving up 28 unanswered points. Freshman running back James Breedy, who rushed for 37 yards on Hartwicks first play from scrimmage, scored on an 11-yard run to open the scoring. Buffalo State scored 22 first-quarter points and cruised to the 12-point win against Robert Morris. Two Bengals -- running back Lamar Wilson and quarterback Chris Henry -- had touchdown runs of over 80 yards, helping the team roll up 327 yards on the ground. Henry also passed for 190 yards. This weekends action features two games between upstate opponents. St. John Fisher travels to Ithaca and St. Lawrence hosts Union. St. John Fishers game at Ithaca will be the Cardinals first trip to Butterfield Stadium; in the past 30 years, 28 teams have traveled to Ithaca for the first time; 25 have left with a loss, including all 16 regular-season opponents. The last time Ithaca hosted a team for the first time and lost was Sept. 28, 1968, when Central Connecticut posted a 33-6 win at what was then called South Hill Field. The two teams met for the first time last fall, when Ithaca opened the season with a 48-10 win. The Cardinals return 14 starters, including top rusher Diallo Lee (889 yards). The Bombers open the season with a new quarterback -- sophomore Brian Young and junior Billy Feldmaier (a transfer from Division I Buffalo) are the top candidates to replace record-setting Mike ODonovan. Union, 6-3 a year ago, returns 16 starters. The Dutchmen, who closed last season with an upset of NCAA-bound Springfield, are led by quarterback Ben Gilbert -- last years ECAC Upstate NY Rookie of the Year. St. Lawrence has won just three games over the past two seasons, but two of the wins came against Rochester, who beat Union last fall. The rest of the Upstate NY schedule features Alfred traveling to Salisbury State, Hobart visiting Dickinson, Hartwick playing at Westfield State, Rochester hosting I-AA Canisius, Brockport hosting New Jersey City, Kean at Rensselaer and Cortland getting a jump on its 2000 New Jersey Athletic Conference membership by hosting Montclair State.
