Everyone vote Brett Elliott for Heisman
Oct
2005
It’s one of those times where we need to mobilize the power of Division III fans behind one of its own. The online public voting for the Heisman Trophy is now available, and we’ve managed to get Linfield quarterback Brett Elliott added to the ballot (thanks to correspondent Ron Boerger, who got the process started).
The top three vote-getters in the online voting receive the equivalent of a first-place, second-place and third-place vote in the official ballot tally. Now, we’re coming to this late in the game, so we need to get cracking.
You can vote from a particular e-mail address once per week. Each vote must be confirmed — they send you a link via e-mail to click on to confirm your vote before it will be counted.
Elliott trails by 12,642 votes and has just 12, but if each person who visits D3football.com on a typical Wednesday votes for him, we will catch up. Let’s show yet another national site the power of Division III, like we did to ESPN.com with the Wabash/DePauw rivalry over the summer.
And if you doubt Division III in the Heisman race, don’t forget Plymouth State running back Joe Dudek finished ninth in the balloting in 1985. Some guy named Bo Jackson won the thing that year.

C’mon, Linfield faithful! We’ve got Elliott on the on-line ballot, now it’s up to you to help Brett get the recognition he deserves!
And even if you’re not a Linfield fan, this is a great way to help get Division III the sort of national recognition it deserves. Take a little time to vote today. And next week. And the week after. And …

He has three votes from me! One for each e-mail address I have.

Done! Thanks Ron and Pat!
And this is not a Linfield thing! It’s a D3 thing!
Elliott is an excellent candidate to carry the D3 banner!
October 26th, 2005 at 10:30 am
I’ve done it twice myself!
I just like how he’s currently above Virginia Tech’s QB Marcus Vick
October 26th, 2005 at 10:50 am
Growl. How come “Division III” is listed as Elliott’s school? Don’t answer that. I already know the answer. But he’s the name that’s listed that way. The Heisman committee may not know it, but Linfield is a real place with a real football team.
Yes, I’ve complained about this before. It’s a pet peeve of mine.
He most certainly has my vote!! And soon, he’ll have the votes of my girlfriend and some of my co-workers, though they don’t know that yet.
Also, under the rules, it says “Users may vote once every week (seven days) from September 25 through December 7, 2005.” So remember to again log on next week!
October 26th, 2005 at 10:53 am
Oops. Make that one sentence say, “But he’s the *only* name that’s listed that way.”
In my rant, my copy editing got a bit sloppy.
October 26th, 2005 at 11:11 am
They didn’t want to load 600 college names b/c it would have made it “harder” to find the right college name for write-in votes. And if they added Linfield, they’d have to add all the other D3, D2, and D1AA schools.
If you go to Brett’s bio, it does say Linfield. Quite frankly, I’m pleasantly surprised that they went to the trouble of adding a bio for him.
Someone should get this campaign to the media in McMinville, the athletic department at Linfield, the school newspaper, and so forth. Any takers ??
October 26th, 2005 at 11:23 am
He is getting at least two possibly three from me, it would be four if we could use a comcast address. Everybody go to Hotmail, Yahoo etc and set up free accounts. Lets do this Chicago/Jersey City style, vote early and often.
October 26th, 2005 at 11:31 am
Elliott just got 4 more votes from my e-mail addresses!!!
Go ‘Cats! Go DIII!
October 26th, 2005 at 12:23 pm
He has my 3 now too. Go DIII.
October 26th, 2005 at 12:36 pm
When I used my Yahoo account, the confirmation email got transferred to my “Bulk” email folder. Something to watch for!
October 26th, 2005 at 12:44 pm
Yeah, I also noticed the “DIII” beside Elliott instead of Linfield. Part of the system’s perpetual caste system, I guess. lol Anyway, a Guilford College Quaker in NC dropped a vote his way …. We “little DIII” guys have to stick together!

If you have dial-up, consider disconnecting and reconnecting between each vote so it has a different IP address. Or cast some votes at work and some at home. They may catch on.
October 26th, 2005 at 1:32 pm
As of 1:32 pm eastern time, Elliott has 266 votes placing him 13th.

He should have about a dozen more once my students get home and check their e-mails.
October 26th, 2005 at 4:37 pm
C’mon everyone….. I’m a Mt. Union supporter and I even voted twice….
Let’s help put D3 on the Map for good!!!
October 26th, 2005 at 5:39 pm
Per Ron Boerger suggestion:
You bettcha…
I’ll make a point of letting Kelly (Linfield SID) know what’s up.
Let’s Roll!!!!
October 26th, 2005 at 5:49 pm
Elliott is closing in on USC’s Matt Leinart… (146 votes behind)
I love it!
October 26th, 2005 at 6:22 pm
Getting Closer. He’s inside of 60 now…He got 3 votes from me
October 26th, 2005 at 6:25 pm
Online votes are great - but seriously - we need ALL d3 fans everywhere to call your local sports radio station, write letters to your sports page editors.
Don’t forget to remind them the Brett holds the single season TD record (over the guy who threw to Jerry Rice) and that his former clipboard caddie was #1 pick Alex Smith.
GO CATS.

Linfield Sports is in on the Campain!!!

Brett Elliott for the Heisman Trophy!
October 26th, 2005 at 9:11 pm
you bet! watch out in ‘08… D3 unite!

October 26th, 2005 at 9:39 pm
Brett is in 7th place, with 791 votes.
Climbing up the ladder now will get hard. Keep up the good work!
October 26th, 2005 at 10:32 pm
Ralph,
Nawwwww … these Division I-A “athletes” (if you can call them that, ha!) have had a month more than Mr. Elliott.
We’ll get him there!
850 and counting…
October 27th, 2005 at 10:20 am
Elliott has two more votes from this Wabash grad. Come on Little Giants, get behind this DIII cause!!
October 27th, 2005 at 11:02 am
I like the enthusiasm here, and Elliot even gets four votes from a Johnnie. To all the other Johnnies out there - ‘Our’ Elliot would have loved this support, let’s show it for ‘theirs’. Remeber, this is about DIII recognition!
October 27th, 2005 at 11:48 am
Dont forget Marcus Washington at Bridgewater College, help make d3 run the tables
October 27th, 2005 at 12:01 pm
Nah, we’re not going to go there. We set up this campaign for one D-III guy and if other schools fans’ are going to co-opt it for their own use, we’re not going to add it to our campaign.
October 27th, 2005 at 12:02 pm
The Maurice Drew crew is strong, apparently. Brett Elliott has gotten 1,216 votes since we posted this blog entry but Drew has gotten 1,243.
October 27th, 2005 at 1:35 pm
Still considering the size of UCLA, the fact that we’re only 27 off that pace is pretty impressive!!
October 27th, 2005 at 2:45 pm
Brett is closing on Reggie Bush by about 40 votes per hour
October 27th, 2005 at 3:37 pm
I’ll be happy if Brett makes it to Number 3, which would garner a 3rd place vote for the Heisman trophy. Drew’s been on Elliot’s vote pace, and Vince Young’s voters have really turned it up a notch. Number 3 though… if the momentum keeps moving, might not be out of reach.
October 27th, 2005 at 4:07 pm
Problem is, and fortunately this isn’t the case for most of the candidates (yet), Texas has a graphic on their football web page which directs you to vote;
http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com
As does Memphis for DeAngelo Williams on the front page of their web site;
http://gotigersgo.collegesports.com/
Both of those guys are currently 1st and 3rd. Not sure how Maurice Drew (UCLA) is getting so many votes. Perhaps local media in LA got the word out. UCLA does have a “Maurice for Heisman” web site:
http://uclabruins.collegesports.com/maurice-drew/
Perhaps Linfield or D3football.com should do the same for Brett?
October 27th, 2005 at 11:48 pm
OK, I just voted (twice) for Brett, but it was a struggle! I’m also a die-hard Wolverine, and it was really hard NOT to vote for Mike Hart!
October 28th, 2005 at 12:13 am
Well, consider that the media might vote for him. And if not, at least Desmond Howard should be counted on.
October 28th, 2005 at 12:53 am
I am proud of all DIII football fans who are supporting Brett Elliott for the Heisman, including my fellow alum “thejudge” (is that you, Dave?). The wide-spread support as reflected in the various emails (St. Johns, Mount Union, Wabash, Linfield-naturally, Guilford, etc.) is inspiring to all of us who recognize the ideals for which the recognition truly stands.
October 28th, 2005 at 2:14 am
I think that we are seeing a kinder gentler Mr Ypsi.
That and the Chisox winning make me want to check for a previously undescribed sports syzygy.
October 28th, 2005 at 2:45 am
Um,
Holy crap. Nice work.
(hasn’t voted yet)
October 28th, 2005 at 2:49 am
Wait,
I thought it said we were above 1,216…
What’s this then?

October 28th, 2005 at 10:32 am
They just re-updated the standings again. Unless they update it again, it looks like just about all the votes from from the last 34 hours aren gone.
October 28th, 2005 at 11:46 am
Yup … last time I checked before they dumped their votes, Brett was at 1973 and Marcus was at 136. They are done to about 1000 and 50, respectively, now.
Oh well … just recast your vote!
October 28th, 2005 at 12:07 pm
Hey, if they dumped the votes, then we just got a chance to start over. Drew lost the most votes, but we have been given a chance to catch on the 6 guys who were ahead of Elliott.
I apparently have successfully recast 2 of my 4 votes.
Vote Early! Vote Often!
October 28th, 2005 at 1:40 pm
I would take any complaints about the voting procedure and the ballot re-adjustment to the Voteforheisman.com people. We are not affiliated with that site.
October 28th, 2005 at 2:01 pm
Just a note on balloting: the bottom of the form says DO NOT USE COMCAST addresses for e-mail verification addresses. I have written to them for a work-around (if Comcast is your ISP and you have no other e-mail address). I’ll let you know their response (F I GET ONE!)
October 31st, 2005 at 12:56 pm
Hey Pat, is there any chance that you could keep this Dose topic visible on Page 1 (it’s already been bumped off by newer threads), at least until the end of voting on Dec. 7? I think if people see it regularly, there will be a greater likelihood of them casting ballots.
The rules say that people can vote every seven days, and a few weeks of repeat voting could really give Elliott a boost.
Just a thought.
October 31st, 2005 at 12:57 pm
No, but on Wednesday — a week after the original post — I plan to start all over again with another brand-new post, so it should accomplish the same thing.
October 31st, 2005 at 2:39 pm
That’s even better!
Thanks.
