Virtual channel surfing

Alright, well, I’m stuck at home today. This site doesn’t cover the mortgage, so on days when I’m not at work my wife often has to work at her part-time job.

So far so good on the Trinity/Amherst game, looks like we did the right thing sending Keith McMillan up there. Sounds like a good game at this point, although Teamline keeps cutting out at inopportune times. As best as I can tell, Trinity scored a touchdown on a broken play/bad snap field goal. Amherst came back with a long TD pass, but the PAT was blocked and Trinity returned it for a defensive two-point conversion. Trinity (Conn.) 9, Amherst 6.

Have already heard good stuff from our folks in the field. Apparently there’s a scenario in which the LL comes down to a coin flip. Kings Point and Shenandoah could be candidates for the open MAC slots. Looks like the weather is holding up so far at Central/Wartburg. Rose-Hulman does live stats so we’ve added a link to the Rose-Hulman/DePauw game on the Scoreboard.

Will post more as I surf through games.

Hobart’s Rick Eicheldinger intercepts Union on Union’s first play from scrimmage. That game off to an interesting start already.

  2. pcole Says:

And now the baby is up from her nap. :)

  3. pcole Says:

Baby is OK. Other two kids are fighting. Meanwhile, Delaware Valley’s Adam Knoblauch has hit Don Marshall for an 88-yard touchdown and now is just 2 passing yards short of 10,000 passing/1,000 rushing.

  4. pcole Says:

Worcester State’s Tom Gabriel hit his NEFC-record 12th field goal and the Lancers lead Fitchburg State 9-7 at the break.

  5. pcole Says:

A hah — tuned in to Ithaca’s live video broadcast for the first time and my 3-year-old is fascinated. “Ooh, daddy, you have a TV on your ‘puter!”

Great picture, I am shocked. Have DSL at home, stream is working fine without hiccuping so far. No score, end of 1.

  6. pcole Says:

Adam Knoblauch became the second Division III player to reach the 10,000 passing/1,000 rushing milestone with a pass to Joel Foreman on a scoring drive. Knoblauich, appropriately enough, finished the drive with a 16-yard TD run. 21-7 Delaware Valley.

  7. pcole Says:

Alright, I’ve gotten stuck on this Alfred/Ithaca game because it’s such a quality production, hard to surf away from it. But Ithaca has scored twice since I logged on and it’s 14-0. Time to move on. Live stats show Capital scored in the first 17 seconds of the game against John Carroll.

  8. pcole Says:

Randolph-Macon broadcasters mention Bridgewater has 30 points with 11 minutes left in the first half. They don’t mention what Macon has scored but I think we get the idea. Time to move on.

  9. pcole Says:

Hobart salvages a field goal after Shawn Mizro takes a 10-yard loss on a sack with goal to go. Union leads 14-3. Good strong, high-quality audio signal from WEOS as always.

  10. pcole Says:

Was just about to tune out and as that happened Union returned the kickoff 59 yards to the Hobart 27.

  11. theoriginalupstate Says:

Pat, the IC and AU game got interesting again as Brady scored w/ less than a minute to go in the half to make it 13-7 IC….

  12. pcole Says:

Alright. What’s Esposito’s status? Did he get back in after he was slow to get up on the second TD catch?

Hobart held, forced an incomplete pass from Union on fourth-and-10 from the 17.

  13. pcole Says:

Going to stick with this until halftime, I guess. Hobart just got a big gain on a tipped pass and has goal to go with a minute left in the half.

  14. theoriginalupstate Says:

Esposito supposedly just had the wind knocked out of him…

  15. pcole Says:

Hobart had a fourth and goal play called back because of a penalty so the first half ends with Union leading 14-3.

  16. theoriginalupstate Says:

Down by 11 w/ the ball inside the 10, you have to kick it…..

Just a side note on the IC/AU game, its the first time AU has scored in 3 years vs IC!

  17. bobsackamanno Says:

how can i get the ithaca au game? ive been trying to get it through wicb but it isnt working well…is there another way?

  19. Ron Boerger Says:

Ferrum started slow against NCWC (14-14 after one), then went off in the second quarter. It was 42-21 with ~2 minutes left when I changed to another game. FC defense a little suspect but the offense is gaining ground in huge increments.

  20. Ron Boerger Says:

    (left in 1st half)

  21. Gordon Says:

Looks like lots of teams who can clinch are rolling along.

    Del Val, Wabash, etc.

On the bright side, Juniata has a nice Eagle mascot and some dude(tte?) dressed up as Chewbaca.

  22. pcole Says:

Got back to that Ithaca/Alfred game in time to see Alfred’s Ron Smith return an interception 60 yards for a touchdown. Alfred leads 14-13 with 12:30 in the third.

  23. Ron Boerger Says:

DePauw is all over Rose-Hulman today. Things started badly for the Engineers when the first play of the game was a 29-yard INT return for a DPU TD. They got that one back with a 65-yard run from Cameron Hummel, but DePauw scored on their next series, Charlie Key fumbled on RHIT’s next offensive play, DPU scored on a trick play, and it was all downhill from there. DPU is up 35-7 as the half ends. Sounds like they are ready to play Wabash next week.

  24. pcole Says:

Sounds like as good as this game is, I need to check out UW-Whitewater/UW-Stout, with Stout leading early 10-0.

  25. Ralph Turner Says:

“Chewbacca” was just sworn in as an American citizen in ceremonies in the north Texas area last month.

  26. Ron Boerger Says:

aka Peter Mayhew, for those wondering.

Trinity (TX) starts out well but two turnovers blunt the early momentum. There may be a QB change coming up as Jacob Cannon has not been sharp after the first two series. Trinity 7, Sewanee 3 at the half.

  27. pcole Says:

Hmm, ok, good game but I have to switch sides on the broadcast. A little too much homerism on the home side. “Take that, Warhawks!” Who says that?

  28. pcole Says:

OK, well, can’t get the Whitewater broadcast to load. So I’m just going to switch games entirely.

  29. reccespynav Says:

It is interesting in Rock Island. Augustana up 17-7 right before the half.

  30. pcole Says:

That’s where I was headed, actually. Little less homerism from the North Central students so far. 0:09 left in the half.

  31. pcole Says:

Kam Kniss fumbles the snap from the 1-yard line. North Central calls time out and settles for a 22-yard field goal. Augustana 17-10 halftime.

  32. pcole Says:

Ithaca kneels down and clinches the E8 with a 28-14 win.

  33. pcole Says:

Washington U. got into the Rockford bullpen and leads 7-5 in the middle of the fifth … err, at halftime.

  34. pcole Says:

Goodness… Ferrum leads NC Wesleyan 63-28 with 3:29 left.

  35. bobsackamanno Says:

what is going on with the hobart union game?

  36. blackhatsonthehill Says:

Christopher Newport….down by 11 in the fourth to Averett.

  37. pcole Says:

Hobart ball down 21-18 5:00 left.

  38. pcole Says:

Would like to listen to Rowan/William Paterson down the stretch here (Post Patterns reports Paterson leading) but Rowan’s broadcast is full. 20-19 Paterson but Rowan ball, apparently.

  39. pcole Says:

That’s a final. Big upset for Paterson. Lots of questions now about what the state of the Rowan offense is without Orihel.

  40. pcole Says:

OK, gotta go pay attention to the kids for a while, losing containment on the little ones. :) Check the Scoreboard for updates.

  41. pcole Says:

Recommending Central/Wartburg and St. Olaf/Concordia-Moorhead among the 2 p.m. games to check in on.

  42. Ron Boerger Says:

Amherst lost to Trinity (CT), 30-20.

  43. Ron Boerger Says:

Occidental just scored on a short FG to take the lead from LaVerne, 10-9, with 1:43 left 1st quarter. The difference is a missed LV PAT.

  44. SmedIndy Says:

North Central forced three second half turnovers, but only scored only once in the second half. They block a game winning FG, but they were offsides on the play.

  45. SmedIndy Says:

Augie kicks the game winning FG with no time on the clock. Wabash will become #1 in the North. Augie clinches the CCIW and North Central will probably go to “C”.

  46. Ron Boerger Says:

Now 16-10 LaVerne. Oxy can’t figure how to stop the LaVerne running game so far.

  47. wildcatinwi Says:

Overtime in UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire game. UW-EC hits a FG to tie the game with 4 seconds left. (According to redswarm81, we should just call this a tie.) Probably no playoff implications anymore, though.

  48. NEFCblogger Says:

Fitchburg State beats Worcester State, 20-17. John Hirko came up with a HUGE defensive stop on fourth down on Worcester’s last-minute scoring attempt. He upended Steve Kasprzak as he turned the corner following a short screen pass.

  49. Ron Boerger Says:

LaVerne stopped Oxy for the first time today, got the ball back inside their 5, throw a deep pass to someone with only three catches all year from midfield down to the Oxy 2. Two runs by Craig get about a yard and a half. Guerrero scores on a sneak. With the PAT, the #7 team in the country now trails 24-10 with 8:20 left in the half.

The Oxy announcers, by the way, are doing a very professional job. They are calling the holes opened up by LaVerne’s OL “ridiculous”.

  50. Ron Boerger Says:

Well, at until they start to talk about how LaVerne traditionally is a bunch of cheap-shot artists …

Oxy gets to midfield but a third-down pass is forced out of the receivers’ hands. LaVerne starts at the six after the punt returner makes a foolish decision to make a return from the four. Oxy, in turn, holds and take over at the LaVerne 37 with about five minutes left in the half. Announcers say a rather obvious clip right in front of a referee was not called.

Next play is a screen to the 20, a roughing the passer call takes it to the ten. Six yard pass on third and goal to Jones and PAT closes the gap to 23-17, 2:48 remaining.

  51. Ron Boerger Says:

LaVerne can’t move, punt is blocked but rolls forward. Oxy takes over at the Oxy 45.

Jones makes a huge reception at the 10, next play is a TD. That didn’t take long - maybe now I know why they’re ranked #7 in the country. Oxy retakes the lead, 24-23 with about 40 seconds left.

  52. dlippiel Says:

Big win today for Union, 28-18. I think this does prove that they are a top 25 team at this point in the year. They really did not even play their best game today and still came out on top. Union has battled all year, sometimes pretty, many times ugly, to get where they are now; undefeated. They deserve respect in Division III football and will hopefully recieve it. I do not feel they will be a stagg bowl contender, but I feel they should make the NCAA tourny. Anyone have any thoughts on next week? Very exciting. Can Union beat RPI? If Union loses are they still in?

  53. Ron Boerger Says:

Yeah, I think you’re a lock unless you lose 76-0 or something next week.

  54. theduke Says:

The Union- RPI game is big stuff in the Capital District. It is one of the nation’s oldest rivalries and always produces good theater. This year will be no exception. The somnolent Union offense of mid season has awakened. RPI will be obsessed with spoiling Union’s perfect season. Throw out stats, comparable scores, and home field advantage. Throw out everything. RPI has a good team. Union wants another undefeated regular season. The momentum of the Union juggernaut of the last twenty five years may just be the difference.

  55. pcole Says:

    I’m back. Did I miss anything? :)

Thanks to East correspondent Tom Wilson, who sent the photo we’re using out front now. Great shot.

  56. theoriginalupstate Says:

“The momentum of the Union juggernaut of the last twenty five years may just be the difference.”

Yeah a teams history is worth two touchdowns alone…..

You had a really good post untill that statement…..

  57. rbrockwell Says:

How about Ferrum College’s 63-28 blowout. I really think the only game Ferrum has had to actually play was the Methodist game, in which they allowed Methodist to get back into. Ferrum has been solid all season and breezing through the conference proves it. As for other games, Averett nice win. Union wraps up a very solid season also and Monmouth played like a playoff team today also. Its just been a good day!!!

  58. pcole Says:

Hopefully that’s the momentum that shows up and not the momentum of the past four years.

  59. pcole Says:

Union has another game today. Don’t put the wraps on their season yet.

  60. gobombers Says:

Union’s got a rivalry game vs RPI, DVC playing Widener, IC vs Cortland, and Montclair vs Rowan….

Hard to imagine after that loss to Lycoming, but it’s foreseeable that the Bombers could be looking at a #1 seed. We need some help, and a Cortland win, but it’s possible……………..

  61. rbrockwell Says:

Pat your going to hate me for bringing this up right now but #24 and #25 lost today and 2 of the 4 teams recieving more points than Ferrum lost today as well. What are the chances of breaking into the top 25?

  62. theduke Says:

This is the second time the gentleman from upstate has taken umbrage with my remarks, The last time he impugned my knowledge of the Union players. He was wrong. Furthermore, he stated that Union deserved little consideration as a good team. Union has been to the Stagg Bowl twice, albeit some years ago. They still have one more high hurdle, RPI. But Union knows about winning ways. They have had a wonderful season thus far. No one will remember how they won. But their record will always be indelible. I sense an Ithaca Bomber booster hovering overhead. If that is the case, they have had their way with Union in the years they met in the playoffs. Perhaps a little deference will come this way if Union prevails next week.

  63. dlippiel Says:

I agree with theduke, Union has had many years of being a power. If you ask anyone who has played them during the past years I bet they would say they needed to bring their A game to beat Union. No one claims they are or have been the best. They have, however had a winning program that has demanded respect over the years. Two Stagg bowls and many post season appearences would classify a team as a power. What a great year of division III football altogether so far. Blood is boiling and all of us “Football critics” are spitting words. One thing I do know and sense. For the ducthmen to gain the respect they already deserve it looks like they are going to have to win the Liberty league title next week.

  64. blackhatsonthehill Says:

It will be interesting to see if Ferrum can win an opening round game (and more interesting to see how long the starters will play in a no-implications final with CNU).

As I stated before, you may outscore this Ferrum team….but the ‘05 squad is good for 24 on anyone in the land of D3!

  65. monarchfan Says:

blackhats - the only way the fc starters should sit next week is if they are up 28+ vs. cnu - the panthers need that win to secure home-field, and i think that’s the ONLY way they win one or two ncaa games…they just don’t have enough quality wins, and unfortunately, cnu won’t be a quality win this year (they’ll be 5-5 if fc beats them) - i’ve doubted ferrum all year, even after they hung on to beat the monarchs at home a few weeks ago - i will tell you, though, the way that fc has won the last 2 weeks has been VERY impressive, and i think you can legitimately say that fc is a top 25 team…i still don’t think they deserve to be ranked ahead of thiel in the regional rankings (thiel is also undefeated but has a win against another regionally ranked team, something ferrum lacks), but they are legit and i hope they carry the usasac flag into at least the second round - congrats to ferrum!

  66. blackhatsonthehill Says:

    monarchfan

I am pretty sure that Ferrum defeated Methodist without the Monarchs top running back in the game (my apologies, but I forget his name). That was a close game still.

That is one reason (and I never heard that fact mentioned) forwhich I would declare the Ferrum season a complete success with a playoff victory. Winning the conference ain’t too shabby, though.

  67. theduke Says:

Dlippiel, Thanks for the backup. No one here is claiming Union as a Stagg Bowl contender this year. In fact, it would be astounding if they made it that far. However, within the context of the Liberty League ( or its antecedents ) they have put together a remarkable record in the last twenty five years. Granted, the last few years have been unremarkable. But no program can sustain championship status ( or something close to that )year in and year out. The Dutchmen have not had a losing season in that time frame. Today a school of Union’s academic caliber would look pretty good getting through the first round of the playoffs.

  68. notsoftbutferrum Says:

This week’s Ferrum game vs. CNU has similar implications surrounding it as the game did two years ago; however this time the shoe is on the other foot. Two years ago CNU had already won the conference, but still had to travel to Ferrum for the final game to sew up home field for the first round. The talk all week was about how long the starters would play against Ferrum, and the focus was not on winning the game. Ferrum took advantage of the Captains overlooking them and defeated them and deflated them going into the playoffs. I know that Ferrum learned a lot from that situation, and trust me when I say that Ferrum will give everything that they have to win this game this weekend. They will not be looking past the Captains, and they will be motivated to remain undefeated…for the next five weeks!!!!! EYE ON THE PRIZE BLACK HATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. blackhatsonthehill Says:

Contrary to some messages I’ve read…..Ferrum hasn’t exactly breezed through the season. Yes, they are undefeated, but they have been knotted up in some games. For instance this weekend, the Panthers were tied with NC Wesleyan 14-14 after the first quarter…yet beat down the Bishops for a 63-28 final. The Methodist game was not a sure thing, nor was the Shenandoah (sp?) game, until late. I believe it was a 28-28 tie at Chowan at the midway point.

Up to this point, and I’m a big fan of seeing it continue, Ferrum has avoided dumb mistakes, executed well and played hard. Kinda like one of those undefeated teams!

  70. rbrockwell Says:

Besides the Methodist game, Ferrum’s defense usually does not settle down until the second half. Look at Ferrum’s Point Differential against their opponents through 4 quarters. Methodist was the opposite, a strong start then relax after a 20-0 lead. I expect Ferrum to tighten up the D against CNU and make a statement. However can Ferrum even play in a statement game? Every team which was suppose to be dominate (Shenandoah & CNU) both turned out to have disappointing seasons. The only team, which could have given Ferrum a strong game, was dropped(Wesley). Also my prediction that Ferrum will be 10-0 and not ranked seems VERY likely, unfortunatly.

  71. notsoftbutferrum Says:

Some pretty good halftime adjustments on the defensive side by the coaches would explain a lot of that. Coach Davis might be one of the best in the business at that.

  72. rbrockwell Says:

Coach Davis did study under legendary coach Hank Norton. Hopefully Davis will continue to build the program back up to the standards which Ferrum College is accustomed. Though we should not get ahead of ourselves, Ferrum should have a better year next year with almost the entire defense returning and a majority of the offense. But we are still thinking about December right now!!!
