Live from around the country
Sep
2007
If you live in the northeast and it hasn’t felt like football season, it should today. Temperatures in the East and Northeast regions (Ohio as well) today are expected to be in the high 50s and then later tonight dip down into the 40s. Good luck to the folks playing under the lights tonight. Just last weekend, the mercury was near 90 for the D3football.com/D3cast Showcase Game between Union and Springfield.
But, the weekend got underway last night with Wesley breaking away from Widener in an offensive showcase for the Wolverines. The seventh-ranked team in the country put up over 500 yards of offense and Larry Beavers scored a pair of touchdowns, including one on an 89-yard kickoff return to start the second half. But, this one could have been closer - Wesley fumbled the football four times.
Today, there’s a full slate of games around the nation with just about every team in action. The NESCAC starts their season next week but most teams are holding scrimmages this weekend.
Quick thoughts…
*Can Heidelberg make it two in a row with a win tonight over John Carroll?
*How many points will Mount Union score in the first quarter this week?
*Will Mike Flynt get into the game for Sul Ross?
*Can Montclair State contain Chris Sharpe and upset Springfield?
For all of today’s scores that aren’t mentioned here, you can check out our national scoreboard that’s filled with audio and live stats links.
And, don’t forget to check out more of Pat and Keith’s adventures in Oregon in the “Greetings from Oregon” blog. It’s probably warmer in Oregon than it is in upstate New York right now.

Sure enough. According to Weather.com
McMinnville, Ore. - 59, high today of 72
Syracuse, N.Y. - 54, high of 59
From the map, it appears the cold stretch spans all the way back to Minnesota as well.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
And we’re off.
No. 21 Rowan gets the ball first and goes three and out on first possession with a penalty thrown in. Wilkes responds by taking a sack.
WGLS mentions muddy conditions in Wilkes. Bad news for fans of offensive shootouts: Defense + Mud + New offenses = 0 points.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Checking in early from Sherman, TX where Millsaps will take on Austin College at 2PM ET. Some bad news for ‘Roo fans as both DBs are hurt. Josh Byrd will not play; Joel Purdy is in uniform and will only see spot duty. Not good when you are facing a talented QB such as Millsaps’ Juan Joseph.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
On its second possession, Salisbury drives 65 yards on three plays, rushes by three different guys (Shockley, Curley and Garner).
Salisbury 7 CNU 0 - early 1st
September 15th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Salisbury backed up to its own 10, picks up 60 yards on three plays again en route to another touchdown. Valdaise Morris puts the Sea Gulls up 14-0. CNU’s run defense getting eaten alive at the moment. Salisbury now 10 for 10 inside the red zone.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Scary situation right now in Brockport.
There’s a Cortland player down on the field and injured after trying to make a tackle.
An ambulance and paramedics have come onto the field and are attending to the player now.
Our thoughts and prayers are with both teams right now.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
CNU drives and fumbles at the Salisbury 26, but bounces back on the next drive capped by a Mike Thomas one-yard TD plunge.
Salisbury 14 CNU 7 — mid-2nd
Also keep an eye on Montclair-Springfield. MSU leads 9-2 early in the second and is updating the scoreboard.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Olivet scores against Wittenberg for the first time in four career meetings.
Keep an eye on the Springfield/Montclair game, with Montclair up 9-2 in the second quarter.
September 15th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Good call, G.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Austin gets off to a great start when Brett Anderson scores on the first play from scrimmage, taking it up the gut 73 yards. Millsaps trails 7-0 with 23 seconds gone in the game.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Congratulations to Birmingham Southern as the Panthers have scored their first touchdown in a Division III game.
Trae Strain recovered a Rhodes punt that was blocked and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. BSC leads Rhodes, 7-0, with about three and a half minutes left in the first half.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
After an excellent kick return Millsaps scores on a short 48-yard drive as Juan Joseph goes 5-for-5. 7-7 with 11:37 to go.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Great start for Birmingham-Southern, They lead Rhoades 7-0 with 3:24 until the half.
Salisbury in the end zone again against CNU on a Jamar Garner run of 20+ yards.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Mary Hardin-Baylor 21, Sul Ross State 0, 3:17 into the game.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
As the 1 pm games head into the half, a couple interesting scores…
MSU 16 Springfield 16 (1:45 2nd): I was writing about how MSU could put a run-oriented offense behind the eight ball by taking a two-score lead and SC scored. Take THAT, me. In other option, er, options…
Sal 21 CNU 7
NC Wes 7 E&H 3: E&H had a chance to tie the game but only got a field goal following first and goal from the 1
Wilkes 0 Rowan 0: Wilkes had -18 yards on the ground, Rowan just 59 in the air.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
In one of the weirder broadcast experiences, if you tune in Capital-Wilmington you get Husson-Norwich.
The NAC is everywhere!!!
September 15th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
A great Austin College kick return is called back by a hold, the ‘Roos can’t move the ball, then Millsaps methodically drives 64 yards to take a 14-7 lead with 7:00 left. Key plays include Joseph to McCarty for 17 on fourth and four and a pass to Woodall being ruled dead before he fumbled at the AC 5.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Hey D3 guys - can’t believe you’re not saying anything about the Fisher vs. U of R game at 7pm. Its being broadcast live in Rochester and its one of the most unique games in D3 - all proceeds go to camp good days and special times (a camp for kids with terminal illnesses). This is also developed into quite a rivalry. Well, hopefully youll cover it on the website tommorrow. You have to see these kids face light up when they get to be on the sidelines and help coach the repective teams.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Rachacha:
Tough to cover everything, but thanks for bringing it to our attention. The game lost a little intrigue when UR got clobbered in Week 1, but the game’s mission is truly special.
In other news, Wilkes scores to take a 7-0 lead. New QB in for Rowan.
CNU and Salisbury trade stops. Sea Gulls still lead 21-7.
September 15th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Two turnovers (an interception and a Joseph fumble at the AC 2) are keeping it close, but Austin can’t do anything with either and Millsaps scores a safety on an ill-advised reverse to make the score Millsaps 16-7 with 12:42 left in the first half.
Millsaps returns the free kick to the AC 33 and are already inside the 20.
Millsaps had 190 yards of offense in the first half while Austin has yet to get a first down. The AC secondary is giving huge cushions to the faster Millsaps receivers and Joseph is picking them apart.
Millsaps misses a 20-yd FGA and Austin has put a new QB in, Andy Braly.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Rowan scores to get within six. Wilkes leads the Profs 13-7 late in the third.
Plenty of upsets brewing…
Sal 21 CNU 7
Olivet 16 Witt 14
Montclair State 26 Springfield 23
Birmingham-Southern 7 Rhodes 0
Stay tuned!
September 15th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Braly takes the ‘roos on an 18-play drive culminating in a 37-yard FG from Jonathan Hersh. Millsaps leads 16-10 with 2:35 left in the half.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Salisbury scores again on another Morris touchdown. The Sea Gulls are up 28-7 with a little over 12 left. New QB in for CNU.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Millsaps misses a 41-yd FGA with 1:01 left.
Giving a new meaning to the term “ill-defined,” AC throws up a pass at midfield with time running down in the half which is intercepted by Jacob Hanberry and returned to the 1-yd line with 0:04 left. Nick Namias dives over RT to put the Majors up 22-10 at the half. The two-point attempt is intercepted.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Rowan scores on a QB sneak by Haggerty. With the extra point, the Profs take the lead 14-13 mid-fourth.
Hobart takes a 27-20 lead on Carnegie Mellon, the first Statesmen lead of the afternoon.
Montclair continues to lead Springfield by two scores midway through the fourth.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Rhodes gets a field goal with 22 seconds left to beat Birmingham-Southern 10-7. Gritty effort by the Panthers in their first varsity action since 1939.
Rowan still clinging to a one-point lead late at Wilkes.
Montclair State’s lead is hacked to three by the Pride with about six minutes left.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Keith and I are at the Catdome (aka Maxwell Field, Linfield College). Glad to meet so many Linfield fans in the pregame.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
Rowan-Wilkes is final, Profs 14-13.
Montclair State has beaten No. 9 Springfield.
Salisbury is in pretty good shape against No. 20 CNU with about 5 minutes to go.
We are not even underway.
September 15th, 2007 at 3:59 pm
(realizes everything I just posted, Gordon recently posted)
I guess I was just updating!
September 15th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
Millsaps’ second-half drive stalls, they miss another FG, this time from 30 yards out - now 0-3 in that department.
Austin puts in their starting QB who once again can’t lead the team to a first down. Millsaps can’t do anything on their second possession and AC has the ball at their 30.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:18 pm
Brockport beats Cortland 28-14 and not as close as the score indicated. Looks like Montclair may be the class on the NJAC this season, fighting it out with Rowan.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
Ugly third quarter but Millsaps blocks a punt (ironically, the dude that’s missed three field goals blocked it) and scores several plays later to go up 28-10. The ‘Roos defense has battled all day but there have just been too many chances for Millsaps to score and too few for Austin.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
Millsaps has been throwing wide receiver screens all day. It finally pays off as John Milazzo breaks one 65 yards to put Millsaps up 36-10 (I missed a point in there somewhere, sorry), 9:07 to play in a game that suddenly has gotten away from Austin College.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
Husson 44 Norwich-0!!!!!!!!!!
September 15th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
Adrian College 20 Bluffton University 0. Another strong showing for Coach Deere’s Adrian Defense.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
I’ll be updating the “from Oregon” blog with Hardin-Simmons/Linfield specifics. We’re 4 minutes in, and it’s interesting already.
September 15th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Final in Sherman: Millsaps 43, Austin 10. A dominating performance from the Majors who piled up over 500 yards of offense and held Austin under 100, excluding the TD run on the first play of the game. Look out, SCAC.
September 15th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Must’ve been a good finish at Hobart. CMU brought it to 27-26 but couldn’t finish the deal.
Salisbury & Montclair with the big wins out East, and Wesley taking care of Widener last night while Dickinson quietly improves to 3-0 … all interesting stuff from the early finals.
A lot of blowouts in progress or over in the top half of the top 25, and a lot of close games in the lower half.
Is that Hartwick I see beating Ithaca in the third quarter?
September 15th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Thiel posts it’s first win today on the road at Albion in Michigan, 13-10. Go cats!
September 15th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Hartwick beats Ithaca 32-30 in a pretty big upset.
September 15th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Looks like one of the “games of the week” next Saturday will be Montclair at Wesley. If Wesley can hold onto the ball it should be a great game.
September 15th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
By the way, I was at the Widener game last night. They are not a top 25 team!
September 15th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
The pollsters agree. The 7 vote-points they got last week, some of those will surely evaporate.
The other two on the brink teams I mentioned in ATN probably did play their way in:
“On the brink of my top 25 are Widener, Salisbury and Montclair State. All three of those teams can play their way in with a win over a ranked opponent this weekend: No. 7 Wesley, No. 20 Christopher Newport and No. 9 Springfield, respectively”
September 15th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
Hardin-Simmons running back Quinton Jones just picked up a long TD run after a Tyler Kaluza fumble and we have a ballgame again, with Linfield holding a 26-20 lead.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
Linfield’s inability to hold on to the football is becoming a trend that I’m getting tired of. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they turned it over twenty plus times in their last 3-4 games…their inability to run the football is getting old as well…
September 15th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
Indeed. Did you know they were about to fumble it again?
Not a good time.
Charles Hasley recovers for HSU at the Cowboy 11.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
Gotta love that…Linfield longest run of the season comes on a broken play QB scramble and then…imagine that…next play, FUMBLE!!
September 15th, 2007 at 6:46 pm
after todays result, i am looking forward to next weeks game with montclair. when i saw it on the schedule i figured it would be a good game and it certainly looks like it will be. not trying to rush things, but this week cant go fast enough.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
I like this HSU hurry-up offense! Go Cowboys!
September 15th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Lately it’s been Linfield not tackling, as Quinton Jones keeps bouncing off Wildcats en route to yards after contact. HSU inside the Linfield 25. And a big run by Feaster has HSU inside the 10.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
YAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 15th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
Mychal Carillo hauls in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Justin Feaster as HSU ties the game at 26-26. HSU takes the lead with the extra point.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Wish I were there with you guys–sounds like a really exciting game and a great atmosphere, to boot.
September 15th, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Was that catch as unbelievable as it sounded on the radio?
September 15th, 2007 at 7:01 pm
The touchdown? Uhh, yes.
Battle on the ground for the ball, too. Legit catch in the end zone. 32-27 lead for Linfield as the two-point conversion fails.
It has been a great game, especially this third quarter. HSU might find itself wishing it had the second quarter back.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
YAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 15th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
I am really impressed with Jones’ ability to gain yards after contact. Another nice TD run and HSU leads 35-32 with 2:05 left in the third.
Great play by Feaster on the two-point conversion, keeping the play alive long enough for Travis Watson to release to the open side of the field.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Currently 924 yards of total offense in this shootout.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Linfield radio guys just said that Pat and KMack made the right choice for a game … which they did.
But when this one is in the books, check out the Concordia-Bethel results (live stats are on the scoreboard link.) It’s the Wild, Wild West today.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
That was nice of them.
Wow — that’s 3 OTs, right?
September 15th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Jordan Bousted wide open in the center of the field, cuts to the right and gets in ahead of the pilon on the final play of the third quarter. 39-35 Linfield to end three.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Yup, MIAC board was about four pages of running commentary. Nary a beer reference in site ….
September 15th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Hello, did the team in McMinvillle leave the D in the locker room at the half? What a game!
September 15th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
(teams)
September 15th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Back to back sacks by Linfield of Justin Feaster. Punt returned by Josh Vierra 51 yards to the HSU 36. Punter Kelsey Larson with the tackle saves a touchdown, temporarily anyway.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
21-yard touchdown pass by Scharer to Travis Masters, 46-35 Linfield with 11:23 left.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
So yes, it was a temporary save.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Nice response by the Wildcats on last two possessions
September 15th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
And a stop on fourth down. HSU is in trouble here, though there is still nearly 10 minutes remaining.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Having a kicker who can do that is sweet at any level …
September 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Scott Birkhofer buries a 46-yard field goal, so it’s 49-35 with 7:44 left. HSU not out of it yet but sure could use a defensive stop.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Indeed. He really killed the ball. Puts him on our informal All-Am watch list.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
That’s a school record 51-yarder to put Linfield up 52-35. Would’ve been good from about 58.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
I’m heading down to the field. Scoreboard will have the final.
September 15th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
Thanks for covering the game, guys. Great job, as always.
September 15th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Had to leave my office and go do my job for about an hour…like what I see now that I’m back! Sounds like the boys found the handle!
September 15th, 2007 at 9:14 pm
North Central is making mincemeat of Benedictine. At halftime, it’s NCC 26-0.
Dominic Sulo’s having another monster game tonight.
September 15th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
NCC’s now up on Benedicting 40-0. Benedictine’s offense hasn’t broken into Cardinal territory yet. Pretty dominating performance by the Cards’ defense.
September 15th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
Final score: North Central 47, Benedictine 0…
September 16th, 2007 at 8:50 am
Quick question - Are St. Cloud State and Azusa Pacific currently ranked in their respective Top 25’s? For anybody who has any clue (I certainly don’t)……..would you compare a top NAIA team with a top D3, D2 or D1-AA team?
Keith, we’re getting ready to enjoy some “red skin” tomorrow night at the Linc!!
September 16th, 2007 at 9:43 am
St. Cloud State was not ranked in the most recent AFCA Division II poll or D2football.com Media poll. At a glance no Division III teams have played a ranked Division II team this year yet.
Azusa Pacific was not ranked in the most recent NAIA Top 25 poll. Southern Nazarene, currently ranked No. 23, beat Howard Payne (0-2) 42-14. UW-Eau Claire (3-0) beat No. 24 Black Hills State 13-10. We’ve had banter back and forth on our message boards between NAIA and Division III school supporters as to how the Associations stack up. I don’t know enough to weigh in.
September 16th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
KMack has summed up the bantering pretty well on the NAIA vs. D3 post. In general, I think the numbers favor d3 vs., naia but there aren’t enough games between teams ranked at the top of each league to make any hard ruling. But Black Hills and St. Ambrose were both top 15 NAIA schools when they lost to non-ranked d3. Every year, d3 teams beat top 10 or top 15 NAIA but I haven’t seen many examples of the reverse.
Bottom line, though: it’s all small college ball and it’s all good.
I would have loved to see those great Carroll teams play Linfield or Mount Union …. or SJU in a meeting of Gagliardi’s two schools.
September 16th, 2007 at 7:10 pm
As of today, it’s
D3 14
NAIA 3
With yesterday’s 2-3 NAIA performance being by far the best so far this season
