Game Day from Chester, Pa.

That’s where I am, anyway. Obviously there are great games with automatic bids on the line all over the place but I’m at this one, where Widener (6-2, 5-0) can wrap up the Middle Atlantic Conference automatic bid with a win against Albright (7-1, 5-0). Albright, Delaware Valley and Widener are all still in play in this league’s race, and Albright has yet to play either of the other two.

Elsewhere, we’ll be keeping an eye on at least nine other games where an automatic bid could be awarded, and more of the 19 remaining bids could be determined if the conference leaders get some help.

Here, it’s a chilly early afternoon, about 50 minutes before game time and standing at about 52 degrees. Widener’s Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium is in a bowl and surrounded on three sides by threes. The home stands are in an impressive permanent grandstand, making for a nice atmosphere when this place is full, or at least crowded.

My first national-type Division III football game was in this stadium in 1998, the year before we launched D3football.com, as Widener hosted Lycoming in a battle of ranked teams. Widener led 13-2 with 3:03 left and had pinned Lyco on its 1-yard line before the Warriors rallied for a 15-13 win. Last time I was here was in 2002, when Widener beat Lycoming in overtime 20-14, converting its own blocked field goal into a touchdown in an ending similar to the Central/Linfield Miracle in the Mud.

On with the show, folks. Games already underway in the East, including the Wash U/Case game that keys Pool B hopes for several teams.

If Del Val loses and Albright wins, the conference is the Lions’. So I’ll provide updates from Doylestown where the Aggies host Wilkes.

Hobart wins 30-20… Rochester is down 1 to RPI midway through the 3rd… The LL is crazy now!!! This is LL Football at it’s finest!!!

  32. cwru70 Says:

Final 35-27. CWRU punts with 6 seconds left???? Setting up the rugby return. The ball was on the 45 why not just run back to the five and run around? Even a safety on gives 2 pts. And why don’t you have a safety behind the punter in case of a high snap? Ah well, all’s well that ends well.

First out right UAA title and first out right title since 1984 NCAC title. Pool B is looking good too 9-0.

widener comes back down after albright fg scores td on Kilkenny reception. leads 28 24 017.5 left

  47. MUCnash Says:

I do have to say though..im just not sure which it is…if MUC is that good or the teams in the OAC just arent what they usually are…Im sure its probably some of both….b/c the team is quite good…great players on both sides of the ball…core of last year’s team is really showing they have what it takes…Im just not completely comfortable with the ease of which these last few games have been won…sure the scoreless streak for the D is impressive…I only worry about what happens should a team really bring it in the playoffs…how will the team respond…its not like they’ve had much experience in close games…I trust Kehres will keep them grounded, hes proven hes good at that…ive said it before…over confidence is my only only worry with this team…

  48. nathanshin Says:

Whitewater takes a 23-10 lead on Stout…22 yard Jeff Schebler FG…end of 3rd quarter.

  49. dlippiel Says:

Hobart defeats the ducthmen today. Hobart is the better team and deserved the win. It would have been interesting though in the 3rd quarter when Union stopped Hobart twice but the drive continued both times because of PERSONAL FOULS by the dutchmen. Congrats to Rochester…I LOVE IT! Union must start Andrew Catellier next week to have a chance against RPI.

  50. dcfbguy1 Says:

    dlippiel,
I agree… Even though I am a devout Statesmen fan I find those personal fouls HORRIBLE!!! It was an awesome game, I really thought Union would take over after the blocked punt for a TD… I hope you guys beat RPI next week and we can take out the equally hot U of R and get that Automatic bid…

  51. dlippiel Says:

Heah dcfbguy hats off to your Statemen, I was not only impressed with their play but their poise throughout the game. Those two personal fouls by Union were ridiculous! The second one looked like a swarm of purple all on top of the one Statemen on the sidelines. NO EXCUSE for that at all. Hobart is a solid football team and one that is very dangerous right now. They deserve to be on the run they are on.

  52. Pat Coleman Says:

Just a quick synopsis of postgame with Widener coach David Wood — Widener is pretty banged up right now and there are about a dozen kids who would benefit from a week off next week. Depending on what the regional rankings look like on Wednesday, they may rest a bunch of players at Wilkes.

  53. nathanshin Says:

    Whitewater 26 - Stout 10…Final.
Warhawk WIAC Champions for third straight years.

  54. wabndy Says:

Wow. Wheaton will lose to Carthage 35-27.

  55. Ron Boerger Says:

BSC is about a minute away from their first Division III W, leading 35-33 with the ball inside the Sewanee 10 yard line, second down.

  56. Ron Boerger Says:

Birmingham-Southern College gets their first varsity win since 1939, 35-33. Congratulations to the Panthers and their fans!
