GameDay, meet Game Day
Nov
2007
GameDay just hit the airwaves on ESPN and so far the crowd is looking pretty good in Williamstown, Mass. I must admit to not being much of a GameDay watcher in the past couple of years. As I’ve traveled to more and more Division III games, I don’t exactly find myself in front of a television at 10 a.m. ET on a Saturday. This is only the third weekend of 11 that I’ve spent at home, and I’m only doing that because I have to be at the airport at a little after 3 p.m. to get to ESPNU.
Just showed highlights of Mount Union. Chris Fowler pronounced Monon Bell correctly. ESPN graphic missed the hyphen on Hampden-Sydney.
I’ll be virtually channel surfing between the big games today and watching for teams to clinch, etc.

Can’t believe my eyes, GameDay at a D3 game. Did I see correct that the D2 selection show was at the same time as ours on the same channel? Our we having to share 30 minutes to announce the playoffs? Hope I am wrong, both division deserve their own time.
November 10th, 2007 at 10:39 am
Unfortunately, this is true. Not sure how we’re going to do in 12 minutes what we usually do in about 20.

In 2004, Carthage surprised everyone by coming back from a 3-7 season to win the CCIW and 2 playoff games with one of the best defenses in the country. That seems a lo-o-ong time ago: NCC 35, Carthage 10, still first half.

November 10th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
Union loses but plays a solid football game! My hat goes off to QB Jared Gourrier. I have been down on him in the past but today he showed me what he is made of. I really believe the Dutchmen will be a force to be reckoned with next year. If Gourrier keeps improving as a passer with his running ability he really can change the way Union plays O. If he comes to camp next summer playing the type of football he played today he should be the starter. I know I am going to get some slack for this but RPI really did not impress me. I think Robertson is fantastic adn so is RB#5. For a team that many have really built up I just don’t see them as a dominate type footbal team. With the loss to Rochester last week and them not being able to really beat anyone good this season convincingly if they play someone tough in the first round I see them losing. I think in the end Hobart is the best team in the LL and if they played RPI today they would the outcome would be different then before.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:06 pm
…the outcome would be different than before(typos)
November 10th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Fisher 39-18….game over
November 10th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Correction on usee’s earlier post: IWU got the fg to make it 7-3. They have since converted another – now Wheaton 7, IWU 6 in the 3rd.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
hearing Hartwick and Utica are tied at 42, anyone with info?
November 10th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
ypsi, not true. they held. the fg came after the fumbled punt snap on the next possession.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
cap wins 17-16 when bw goes for 2 and win….nada
November 10th, 2007 at 4:18 pm
wheaton scores now leads 14-6 end of 3rd
November 10th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
With Ithaca’s win over Cortland today, do they have a shot at the playoffs at 8-2?
November 10th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
usee, but you had had a brain fart and said “wheaton kicks a fg to make it 7-3″. Since then, Wheaton got a td, leads 14-6 with seconds left in the 3rd.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:22 pm
guilty as charged. sorry. misread your post. thanks for “fixing” my post, even though you are the bad guy today!
November 10th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
bethel 17, st. john’s 14, final.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

wheaton 14 IWU 12
November 10th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
usee, gotta do what I can, since I’m hopelessly outnumbered on the CCIW board today!
IWU just got a td, will go for 2 to tie. Pass incomplete – Wheaton up 14-12.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
Some great results so far. Interesting at DePauw, making Keith look good in Triple-Take. Second year in a row Bethel takes down SJU to secure a playoff bid.
November 10th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
9 minutes left in the 4th in Bloomington, and they just lost power! Broadcast is still going on batteries. Can this game get any weirder?
November 10th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
iwu scores to take a lead 18-14 (2pt conv no good)

November 10th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
IWU wins 18-14. NCC beats cathage and takes the AQ
November 10th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
central beats wartburg 17-14.
November 10th, 2007 at 5:43 pm
dcfbguy1:
You already know the outcome of the Fisher Alfred game (39,18). You need to be corrected about the scoring capability of Alfred through the air. Fisher went to a 3 down lineman formation with the remaining 7 players defending against the pass and shutdown Alfred. Alfred just did not have what it takes to win today. They showed no running game at all against Fisher. Maybe next year.
November 10th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
I see that New Jersey lost to Kean, dropping them into a tie for the NJAC with Cortland (who beat them h-to-h), yet TCNJ is listed as the AQ on the front page. What sort of crazy tie-breaker do they use that h-to-h doesn’t count?!
November 10th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
TCNJ did beat Cortland.
November 10th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Hobart looks headed for a ECAC game… Fisher will take the Pool C… Fisher, Ithaca and Hobart can’t all get one…
November 10th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
What bout montclair state
November 10th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
montclair might be paddling in the same boat as hobart… the east is just too competitive this year, you know?
November 10th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
VERY proud to be from Randolph-Macon after today, even with the loss. They played a classy, mistake-free, stick-to-your-guns style, and even though they didn’t make a lot of plays, it seemed like the foundation is solid.
Adding end zone seating and very large grandstand on the H-SC side made for one of the best game-day atmospheres I’ve seen at Macon, if not all over the place.
Even though I was a little sick standing in the middle of their postgame celebration, congrats to Marty Favret and H-SC for their first ODAC title in 20(?) years.
I have a feeling next week will be at Wesley and won’t be so kind, but you never, ever know.
Interesting results all over the country, lots of close scores in the key games.
How was the ESPN broadcast? I did not see it, but would love to have tape or see highlights on ESPN.com or YouTube, if anyone knows if that’s available and/or legal.
November 10th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
A shame for the Hawks and Bombers, but I really think Hobart will get the Pool C. It’s science.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Almost picked Kean/TCNJ for one of the Triple Take questions. Dangit!
Monon Bell ending sounds like it was gr-eat!
Knowing you’re in doesn’t necessarily bode well for Week 11, does it?
Time to check on … wait, Oxy doesn’t kick for 2 more hours. 10 Eastern. Hmmmph.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Gonna be a lot of teams with losses, maybe even multiple losses, in the field. So much for the regular season means so much theory (and yet it still means everything to get these AQs, you just don’t have to go undefeated … which I understand is not happening in I-A either after Illinois beat Ohio State today)
In any case, the projection Pat did the other day … looks like he nailed the LL, but some of the seeds and stuff can be thrown out. North Central is in, Wabash might or might not be on the road with the loss, TCNJ same deal (probably bodes well for the Muhlenberg as East No. 1 suggestion) … Hartwick is in, with a 4OT win.
Wow, lotta wows.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Why would hobart make it over a montclair state who has a signature victory at Wesley and has slightly harder SOS then hobart.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
rams15: Why would Montclair pass Hobart in the regional rankings if they were obviously behind them last week?
November 10th, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Coleman: Why are they ahead of them anyways?
November 10th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Also why did they have to move salisbury to the East when there are 2 good teams in hobart and montclair.
November 10th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Montclair lost by 30 to Cortland. That’s the dagger, myfriend.
November 10th, 2007 at 9:13 pm
Montclair doesn’t actually have the stronger OWP, however.
http://www.d3football.com/strength-of-schedule/2007
25 Hobart 8-2 .800 .567 .523
84 Montclair State 8-2 .800 .528 .537
November 10th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
Here is my projected bracket. Generally, I agree with yours with a few changes.
Pool B: Case, Wesley, Salisbury
Pool C: SJF, St Johns, MtSt Joseph, Capital, Whitworth, Hobart, St Olaf (last two out Wartburg and Wheaton)
South
NC Wesleyan
1) W&J
2) Wesley
3) UMHB
4) Case Western
5) Salisbury
6) Trinity
7) Hampton Sydney
North
Olivet
1) Mt Union
2) Franklin
3) Wabash
4) Mt St Joseph
5) Capital
6) North Central
7) Concordia (Wis)
East
Hobart
1) Muhlenburg
2) St Johns Fisher
3) Curry
4) RPI
5) Widener
6) Hartwick
7) New Jersey
West
St Olaf
1) UW-Whitewater
2) Bethel
3) Central
4) St Norbert
5) Whitworth
6) Redlands
7) St Johns
Muhlenberg is a national fit as the East #1 seed. I prefer moving Case to South over Capital. I picked st olaf over wartburg based on Augsburg game (loss for wartburg, blowout win for st olaf). I eliminated wheaton based on losing last two games. In the west, i would need to have 1 vs 8, 2 vs 4, 3 vs 7, and 5 vs 6 to assure that only one flight needed to be made. No other flights would be necessary.
November 10th, 2007 at 10:50 pm
Whittier 21, Occidental 14 with 12:35 left in the 2nd quarter
November 11th, 2007 at 1:00 am
DIII Just got a couple mentions at the end of SportsCenter. The #10 top play was from the Williams-Amherst tilt and #8 was the Monon Bell game. And they weren’t fluke, “news-of-the-weird” type plays. Maybe ESPN is giving DIII it’s due finally? Or might this just be a tease of some serious coverage before going back to treating DIII as a sideshow?
Here’s hoping its an actual (minor) shift of landscape and not just a novelty act.
November 11th, 2007 at 1:16 am
It’s now 67-42, Whittier over Oxy, 5 to go. And the broadcasters have been talking about email coming into them (it’s been a looong game). I sent them one, and they talked about it on the air (kinda cool).
November 11th, 2007 at 1:46 am
And that became a game again, to end a long day. Final Whittier 67, Occidental 61. Oxy recovered two onside kicks and had the ball with 19 seconds left but couldn’t make a miracle happen.
