Gameday: Week 6
Oct
2008
Not all Saturdays are created equal and this one clearly has more interesting games than most.
No.1 Mount Union and No. 4 Capital meet each other in a familiar situation with Mount Union as the favorite and Capital hoping to upset the Purple Powerhouse. These teams have had a handful of meetings with these same national rankings and none of the outcomes favor the Crusaders.
No. 17 Salisbury takes the field without several members of its starting defense against St. John Fisher who is without any margin for error if it has any chance at an at-large bid.
Elsewhere the only undefeated teams in the NJAC (Cortland-Montclair), SCIAC (Occidental-Redlands) and MIAC (Augsburg and Carleton) meet. No. 15 Case Western faces its toughest test in Wooster. Ditto for Wheaton (Ill.) against Augustana and Wabash against Wash U. Lycoming ’s resurgent offense meets Albright, which struggled to score against FDU-Florham last week while Del Val hosts Leb Val.
Plenty to talk about, plenty to follow. Have at it and enjoy a great day of football.

October 11th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
In the house here at Cortland (Holy Palace, Batman! Still in awe … )
Just underway, I’ll have updates at some point.
October 11th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
UW-Whitewater has taken a 14-7 lead at UW-River Falls. Levell Coppage 2 short TD runs for the Warhawks, 2:30 remain in 1st quarter.
October 11th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Montclair put together a nice drive, lifted by a flanker middle screen that actually worked, but mostly because WR Omar Sevilla broke a bunch of tackles and got down to the 1.
Cortland had a 42-yard KOR to set up a FG, and it looks like it’ll be 7-3 at the quarter mark.
They’ve given us the SJF 24, Salisbury 17 at the half update, as well as Kean leading Buff State 31-19.
Some general thoughts, these look like the two best teams I’ve seen in person this year so far (not that that means much), good intensity and toughness so far on both sides.
As for the setting, I’ll be raving about that in ATN, most likely, so I won’t go overboard now.
Anyone out there seeing anything interesting at the other big games?
October 11th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
wesley 7 iona 0 late in the first . don’t know details just picked up game
October 11th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Cortland defense pins Montclair, fair catches a punt at the 50, and Ray Miles hits Eric Hajnos on a deep post for a TD and 10-7 lead.
Last drive and first play here (big sack), Cortland’s been the standout defense. Remember Montclair came in with the highly-touted unit.
Lots of time left, of course.
October 11th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Jeff Donovan passes to TE Nick Slupski for 11 yards and a Touchdown.
66 yard scoring drive.
UWW 21 UW-River Falls 7
7:24 in 2nd quarter
October 11th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Salisbury scored very early in the 3rd to make it 24-24. There are live stats available for those who care.
Gotta hand it to that offense; they know their D is going to be up against it today and they need to have a great day. So far, they are. Well over 300 yards for both.
Montclair State’s Ryan Boysen is proving to be a scrappy quarterback who can make some throws on a rope. Which is twice as impressive since he was a wide receiver until a couple weeks ago. Earned his stripes in rallying them past William Paterson last week, and you can see how.
As I’m writing this, he’s led them to first and goal, and Fisher has gone ahead 31-24. Yow!
October 11th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
7-6 wesley iona missed pat
October 11th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Leb Val dominating time of possession, 20 minutes to 8:30. They lead.
Leb Val 14 - 1:30 2nd
Del Val 7
October 11th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Cortland held Montclair to an 18-yard field goal. Looks like it’ll be 10-all at the half.
October 11th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Aggies take three plays to go 43 yards. PAT no good.
Leb Val 14 - 41.4 2nd

7-6 wesley half
October 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
What’s going on in Alliance - 28-0 in the 2nd? Were there some early turnovers or something?
October 11th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Mount Union 28-0 in the 2nd. (shakes head) At least we’ve learned not to get geeked up for big MUC games and head out to Alliance.
I’ll be starting the 3rd quarter on the Cortland radio broadcast … as though someone out there is within earshot of the stadium
That last Montclair drive that ended in a FG was 17 plays, and 8 minutes. Not sure who’s happier about it, the Red Hawks because they moved the ball & controlled the clock, or Red Dragons because they held.
Fisher scores again. A valiant Gulls effort, I suppose, given the circumstances.
October 11th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
salisbury has fumbled twice inside the sjf 5
October 11th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

October 11th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
sjf scores first salisbry losses nine yrds recovers and has a first down at the 4
October 11th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
You watching? I didn’t realize there was video too. I just got off the air, but it looks like from live stats SJF scored 1st in OT and Salisbury is on its 11th play.
Cortland up 17-10 and driving. Defense has stiffened. Montclair’s a pretty good team at this point, a little uneven … this one obviously isn’t over, but they haven’t looked terribly sharp here in the 3rd. Aaaaaand the Red Dragons miss a 45-yard FG attempt, so it’s still a one-score game as we start the 4th.
October 11th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
salisbury has run 14 plays and has a firstr and goal from 1
October 11th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Wow, this Salisbury-SJF game must be phenomenal. Shelby Fisher just scored, if the kick is good it’s 45-all.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

October 11th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
salisbury scores up 52-45
October 11th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Montclair 80-yard punt return but tackled inside the 10 (slow Cortland guy had a great angle, good hustle!) … Still 17-10 but now Red Hawks threatening.
Before I could click submit, Jeff Bliss scores on a 7-yard TD run, bulls through, breaks a couple tackles … and we have a tie game with 11:03 left.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
52 all.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
dam sjf scores tied at 52

October 11th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
iona punts from the wesley 31????? to the 4
October 11th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Montclair state does it with D … fumble and long return sets up 1st and goal at the 9. Suddently a game Cortland was beginning to control begins to unravel on a special teams play and a turnover.
Huge sack actually. Big 3rd-and-13 coming after a Montclair timeout.
Over at SJF/Salisbury … you think these two teams are aware what’s on the line? Sounds like a straight-up battle.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
salisbury holds … sjf misses fg
October 11th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
SJF missed a FG?
Montclair State sacked again (actually was a QB draw ran into the teeth of a blitz), then flagged for breaking the huddle with 12 people, then Ben Nagle blocks a 40-yard field goal attempt … aaaand it’s still 17-17.
This game is too good for me to be able to watch the Fisher/Salisbury finish
October 11th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
looks like salisbury setting up fpr a 43 fg t.o sjf
October 11th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
no good from 42
October 11th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
salisbury gets ball first.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Did Salisbury miss a FG too? If so, wow.
The wireless here is exceptional, but Empire8.tv (video link) tells me the Sal-SJF game is already over.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
wesley driving again end of 3rd wesley 16-12
October 11th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
wesley fumbles again
October 11th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
i just have the live stats now
October 11th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Wow. Cortland’s Ray Miles throws a jump ball, WR amazingly comes down with it over the DB at the 7, then a second DB runs into the play and strips the ball in one smooth motion … Montclair State possession at the five.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I see Salisbury 58-52 … no idea if that’s a final, pre-PAT attempt or what.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
salisbury scores rsh fails 58-52 salisbury
October 11th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
wesley D has stopped iona again
October 11th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
sjf fumbles but recovers
October 11th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Says Fisher ball, Fisher fumbled in OT … but recovered its own and lives to play again. I think.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Antwan Anderson scores on a 25 yard scamper; UWW takes a 45 - 24 lead over UW-River Falls with 5:57 in 4th quarter.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
wesley driving again… big chunks of yrds Jackson getting the load to the 15
October 11th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I’ve now been officially blamed for Cortland State having a game that looks like its bound for OT. Apparently they remember the last time I was at a Red Dragons game, a 14-7 OT loss to Rowan that eventually kept that 9-1 team out of the playoffs.
Big completion across midfield for Cortland though, and they’re driving inside 2 minutes.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Another big completion for Cortland, 30 yards to the 8 … looked like they caught the beast MLB Hunt in zone coverage against their top WR Hejnos. (top guy today anyway)
October 11th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
mc sweeney avoiding rush after rush
October 11th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
58-52 appears to be final. Salisbury.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
sjf qb sacked end of game ?????????? wait
October 11th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Cortland scores on a 8-yard Giuliano on the first play after the timeout … speculation in the box is that they let him score rather than letting Cortland kill clock and kick the GW FG.
Then Montclair blocks the PAT. 23-17 with 1:38 left.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
salisbury wins!!!
October 11th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
wow
October 11th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Augsburg/Carleton 28-all at the half.
DePauw leads B-SC 28-21 in the 4th. Hi Ron!
October 11th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Matt Cook grinds out 234 yards and four touchdowns including two in the fourth quarter. Del Val rallies for the final 13 points to win.
Del Val 26 - Final
Leb Val 14
October 11th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Meanwhile Lyco all over Albright, 20-0.
Good news, MAC. Lyco’s back.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
wesley scores 96 yrd drive 23-12
October 11th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
3rd-and-8 near midfield for Montclair, loss of 11 on the sack brings up a desperation 4th-and-19 for the Red Hawks.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
wesley intercepts in end zone run back to the 50 . 5 mins to go
October 11th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Wow. Boysen running forward, knows he’s close to LOS so chucks it … ends up being a gain of 24.
29 seconds left. Actually resetting it to 30.
MSU spikes on 1st down on the 38. They still have a chance here.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
This kid is the MSU QB going forward. Scrambles to buy time for a gain of 12.
Even if they don’t pull this out … it’s going to come down to 1 play … Montclair has a clutch guy.
Next pass inc. … 0:16 left on the 26. Need a TD here, but PAT wins it.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Cortland keeps bringing pressure to make Boysen get rid of it.
0 timeouts for MSU, no middle of the field here with 12 seconds left. Well they went over the middle and it was incomplete anyway.
One shot for all the marbles.
If I don’t post again, Montclair didn’t get it.
October 11th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
wesley first and 10 inside 30… 2.35 left
have to go..
October 11th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

October 12th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Occidental just went up two scores on Redlands in the fourth quarter. Sounds like Redlands is struggling a little on offense with Dan Selway injured.
