It’s a cold and rainy afternoon in upstate New York as Cortland and Ithaca play for the Cortaca Jug.
Ithaca starts back-up Brian Grastorf at quarterback in place of Dan Juvan. Grastorf looks comfortable on Ithaca’s opening drive and the Bombers have moved the ball into Cortland territory with a combination of runs by Bergerstock, Ruggerio and Grastorf and several passes.
Bergerstock already though is on the sideline, and Ruggerio is in the backfield as the featured back.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
The Monon Bell is ringing over on the DePauw side of the field here at Byron P. Hollett Little Giant Stadium. It rained most of the morning but has stopped for now, leaving us with an overcast, windy afternoon with a temperature in the low 40s. The wind really whips down the length of the field. More on that later.
I’ll be on Wabash’s radio broadcast a little after 12:30 p.m. ET.
http://www.wabash.edu/kane/realaudio/index.cfm
November 15th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Well that’s an opening statement by the Bombers.
Ithaca drives down the field on its initial possession (a 78-yard drive) and scores on a touchdown pass from Brian Grastorf to Kyle Crandall. Crandall got behind the Cortland secondary and was wide open in the end zone. Grastrof 5-of-5 passing on the drive.
The Bomber offense operated most of the drive with Brian Grastorf (Dan Juvan’s back-up for most of the season) and back-up running back Dan Ruggiero.
7-0 IC, 9:36 1st Q
November 15th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
The cloud covering has broken and the sun is peaking out here in Doylestown, PA. The natural grass field should be fine for Albright and Delaware Valley. I’ll post interim updates as time permits from this game and Lebanon Valley/Lycoming, which could be the other piece of the MAC postseason puzzle.
For Delaware Valley, senior linebacker Kyle Reuter will wear number 50 instead number 5 in honor of his grandfather and father. It could be his last game as an Aggie.
Lycoming has decided not to announce the score of the Albright/Del Val game during its contest with Lebanon Valley. Both teams need Del Val to win so better to focus on the task at hand.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Good point — it’s grass here too but the field is in good shape at the moment. We’ll see how it goes as the day progresses. Talking to Wabash officials, there was certainly some concern that, should Wabash win and the field get torn up this week, they’d be in line to host a game next week in the playoffs.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Field conditions not an issue at the Stadium complex in Cortland. The stadium features a field turf surface. It is raining though the players don’t seem to have any issues with traction.
Cortland puts together a solid drive that stalls out around the Ithaca 20. Ithaca frosh Spencer White ends the drive on a 4th and long for Cortland with a textbook open-field tackle of a scrambling Ray Miles to stop him just short of a first down.
7-0 Ithaca 4:30 1st Q
November 15th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
McGrew
Decided not to fight the weather and stay inside and watch the game on Time Warner. Nice stop by Ithaca on 4 & 5.
Bombers take over at the 20… are you surprise that Cortland St is throwing so much in this weather?
7-0 Ith 3 min left in 1st
November 15th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Fast moving first quarter in Cortland. At the end of 15 minutes in the rain..
IC 7 Cortland 0
Ithaca’s offense stuttered a bit on it’s second possession but was helped out by a personal foul penalty on Cortland (not anywhere near the ball). Ithaca moved into Cortland territory but the drive stalled out after a fumbled center-quarterback exchange.
Numbers from the first…
IC 99 total yards, 35 rush 64 pass
Cortland 45 total yards, 20 rush 25 pass
November 15th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Something else interesting to keep an eye on — Maine Maritime 2-for-2 on two-point conversions this afternoon in the NEFC title game. As our colleague Mark Simon tells us, they don’t kick extra points and they don’t pass.
They trail Plymouth State 20-16.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Cortland goes to the ground game with Andrew Giuliano and moves into IC territory. The Dragons then look to the passing game and the drive comes to a halt after an errant swing pass on 3rd-and-2.
Jeff Lang Converts for Cortland on a 39-yard field goal from the right hash.
IC 7 Cortland 3, 10:51 2nd
As for the passing, not really. Both teams are throwing the football despite the rainy weather. Grastorf has looked a little bit better than Miles so far. I don’t know what it is about this rivalry but it seems to bring out the best in back-up quarterbacks.
November 15th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
10-7 Cortland… block punt for td 9 min left in 2nd
November 15th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Blocked punt by the Dragons, touchdown Cortland.
Freshman Cody Allen blocks an Ithaca punt, then freshmen Bill Smith recovers the ball and runs 10 yards into the end zone for a score.
10-7 cortland, 9:00 2nd
November 15th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Ithaca marched into Cortland territory on an amazing catch by Thomas Vossler (ala Terrell Owens-San Francisco 49ers playoff TD catch except he juggled it after the hit). But, a third-down drop by Brian Weverbaugh and a 4th-down stop by Cortland on an incomplete pass ended the drive.
Cortland responded with a three-and-out and Ithaca takes over at its’ own 30.
10-7 cortland, 5:02 2nd
November 15th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
DePauw takes the wind for the first quarter and will put its defense on the field. It’s coming out of the left-hand end zone at anywhere from 10-20 mph. Remains overcast and dry, with fans still piling into the stadium.
As a reminder, this game is on HDNet — if you have a satellite HD package you may well find it. Should be a good one.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Evan Sobecki making DePauw regret putting its defense out there first. Hasn’t been stopped for under 5 yards since. Wabash in the red zone already.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
And as I say that, on the eighth play of the first drive, Sobecki was stopped for a loss of 2.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Touchdown Ithaca.
Brian Grastorf hits Kyle Crandall on a slant route at the 35-yard line and then he races down the field for a touchdown. Officially an 80-yard touchdown connection between Grastorf and Crandall. Second score of the game for Crandall.
Ithaca 14 Cortland 10, 1:26 1st
November 15th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Incomplete pass on third-and-9 sets up a 34-yard field goal attempt for Drew Oehler. Blocked. Picked up by the holder and carried for a loss back to the 28. Big stop for DePauw on the final series.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Thanks for the updates John. The Cortaca game is also being broadcast at http://www.wicb.org/.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I am listening to K-Mac on our pregame show on WDEL/Wesley pregame. Good Job Keith!
November 15th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
DePauw big conversion on third down, might have gotten a generous spot to convert with two Spud Dick passes after a 1-yard run on first down.
Jon Ellis nicely bumped a run outside on second-and-11 to get DePauw into Wabash territory.
Hit Bryan Mulligan for a 14-yard gain. On third-and-6, Dick found tight end Mark Branigan at the Wabash 17.
Fans still coming in here btw.
Ellis bounces into an open hole again, down to the 6, first and goal DePauw.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Short gain on first down, loss of yardage on second for Ellis. False start back to the 11 on third down. Screen pass well short of the first down, bringing up a 25-yard field goal attempt for Jordan Havercamp.
Which he hits. 3-0 DePauw, 2:33 1st.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Ithaca 14 Cortland 10 – HALF
Extended half time at the Stadium because Cortland is holding a ceremony to honor its’ 1988 team that went undefeated in the regular season. The 1988 team won what was at the time billed as the “Upstate New York Game of the Century” between Cortland and Ithaca. Ithaca defeated Cortland in the playoff re-match en route to the national championship.
Unofficial numbers courtesy of Live Stats.
Ithaca
Brian Grastorf 10×16, 178yds, 2TD
Dan Ruggiero 12 rushes, 30 yards
Kyle Crandall 4 catches, 112 yards, 2 TD
Cortland
Ray Miles 7×16, 41yards, 0TD
Andrew Giuliano 8 rushes, 66 yards
Eric Hajnos 3 catches, 30 yards
Total Yards
IC 221 Cortland 126
November 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Spud Dick was 6-for-6 on the drive for 41 yards. Jon Ellis seven carries for 30 yards, but most of them on two carries.
Steve Valdiserri just stepped in front of a telegraphed pass by Matt Hudson and returned it to the Wabash 12.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
DIck just got saved when a telegraphed pass of his in the end zone was tipped by Chris Schweiggel and dropped by Derrin Slack. Catch by Brayden Dahlstrom on the next play gets first and goal from about five feet.
Ellis gets nothing on first down.
False start on the TE on second down pushes them back to the 7.
End of the first quarter. 3-0 DePauw.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Dump-off pass nearly intercepted by Darryl Kennon — he can’t believe he dropped it, in fact.
Time out DePauw on third-and-goal. And then a delay of game out of the timeout. I think there was some confusion because of the length of the timeout for TV … but the penalty stands.
No matter. Chris Gabarra open in the end zone for six. 10-0 DePauw, 14:52 2nd.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
End of the first quarter in Alfred.
St. John Fisher 14 Alfred 7
November 15th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
As we look elsewhere on the big board — thanks John M. for that — Bridgewater with a lead on Catholic 7-6 in the first quarter. CNU leads Ferrum for the USAC bid 10-0 early in the second. Plymouth State up 33-16 on Maine Maritime at the half. Leb Val leads Lycoming. Delaware Valley leads Lycoming.
And Matt Hudson throws another interception, underthrown ball with the wind behind him and Valdiserri picks off another. DePauw at its own 40.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Big catch by Mark Branigan — DePauw writer tells me they haven’t used the tight end much all year but he has a couple nice catches. Gain of 27.
Big stop for Wabash brings up third-and-9 at the 21.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
LaGrange leads Huntingdon 7-0 9:42 to go in the second
November 15th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
First down to Chris Gasbarra at the 11.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Millsaps is having a funny day so far. At the end of the first quarter, they’ve outgained Birmingham-Southern 250-10 but lead only 10-7. The Majors have put the ball on the ground four times, losing two, and the Panthers got their score on an 87-yard kick return from David Langston to stay close. Given B-SCs total inability to move the ball (they just picked up their second first down of the day early in the second quarter), it shouldn’t stay close much longer.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Millsaps 10, Birmingham-Southern 7, start of second
November 15th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Moravian 14, Muhlenberg 0, 9:45 in 2nd
Could be a crazy day!
November 15th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Not sure how Ellis stayed on his feet, but three or more Wabash players had a change to wrap him up after a short gain — instead he breaks loose to the 4.
Ellis pushes forward to the 1 for a first down and goal.
And Ellis gets in the end zone on first down. Another false start for DePauw on the PAT, and Havercamp is wide left on the second attempt. 16-0 9:30 2nd.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Thanks, Conrad, you’re the only source on LaGrange/Huntingdon scores here so I’m interested in as many as you can get.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Wabash had committed a personal foul on the TD. Kicking off from the 50, DePauw tried a pop-up kickoff and nearly came up with it, but Wabash starts at its own 15.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Huntingdon ties it up 7-7, 8:00 in 2nd on a blocked punt.
LC scoring drive was 9 plays 99 yards, LC RB Mario Wallace 12 carries for 112 yards already.
;
November 15th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
The skies have opened up again in cortland. The rain had stopped but it’s pouring now.
cortland marches down the field on its’ first possession of the second half with a no-huddle offense and the running of Andrew Giuliano. Ithaca’s defense helped out with poor tackling. Ithaca with a key stop on 3rd and goal on a pass break-up on a slant pattern by corner Jason chier.
Jeff Lang bangs home his second field goal of the day, a 22-yarder.
Ithaca 14 cortland 13, 11:24 3rd
November 15th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Big stop on third-and-short forces Wabash to punt after one first down. Good punt, though, hops over the receiver’s head and back to the DePauw 15.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Touchdown Ithaca. 21-13 Ithaca
A 32-yard screen pass from Brian Grastorf to Dan Ruggiero. Ruggiero had great upfield blocking from his wide receivers and weaved through traffic to get into the end zone almost untouched. A 10-play, 71-yard drive for the Bombers.
6:50 remaining in the third.
In other good news for Ithaca fans, Alfred 23-14 over St. John Fisher, 3:21 left in the first half.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Sack on third-and-11 just short of midfield forces DePauw to punt. Clock rolling with 3:20.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Just getting situated really … Bridgewater is tied with Catholic, Ithaca is beating Cortland State, Rochester is beating Hobart, DePauw is beating Wabash.
I love Week 11.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Oh, and Moravian up on Muhlenberg.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Wabash nearly fumbled the punt. Starts at its own 20.
And Hudson throws his third interception, which Paul Gbur returns to the house. 22-0 pending the PAT.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Keith — the situation room is the best pace to get situated.
PAT good for DePauw and it’s 23-0. Biggest deficit Wabash has faced this season, though that probably goes without saying.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
So who is playing Wolf Blitzer?
November 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Millsaps turns it over yet again deep in BSC territory, this time at the 4 and after a penalty the Panthers take over at their 1. Still 10-7 with a couple of minutes left in the first half, but BSC has driven back to near midfield for their most success offensively of the day.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Moravian 14, Muhlenberg 7, (at the half on the Scoreboard.)
November 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Well, you’re John King. Maybe that makes me Wolf Blitzer. And Keith … dunno, you pick.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
First takeaway of the game in cortland.
cortland was driving at will but an overthrow by cortland quarterback Ray Miles is intercepted in the back of the end zone by Ithaca’s Jason chier.
Ithaca takes over at its’ own 20, around three minutes to go in the half.
As I type, Brian Grastorf, Ithaca’s quarterback makes a bad decision and is intercepted on a downfield pass into double coverage at the 50-yard line.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Delaware Valley leads Albright 21-9 at the end of the first half. Three of the Aggies’ four drives ended in touchdowns.
Leb Val and Lycoming are tied at 13 approaching halftime.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Wabash trying to salvage something of this first half. Got good field position off the kickoff, which was into the wind and started short because of a DePauw unsportsmanlike penalty on the TD.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Did I accidentally hit replay on my DVR? Ithaca’s Jason chier intercepts Ray Miles for a second-straight time in the end zone.
Three turnovers in this game, all in the last few minutes.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Catholic trails Bridgewater 20-13 at the half. Montclair up on Kean 17-7 at the break.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
HALF
Alfred 23 St. John Fisher 14
November 15th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Del Val leads Albright 21-9, scoring touchdowns on its first three drives. Isgro throws two touchdowns and the Aggies have 248 yards of offense. Lycoming and Leb Val are tied at 13 in a see-saw game at the half.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Tarren Collins sniffs out a Wabash screen and breaks it up on third-and-10. Sets up a fourth-down decision here for Wabash. Stacy Crawford breaks up a pass in the end zone with 1:01 left in the half.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
The Game is tied 7-7 at half. Bridgewater up 20-13 on Catholic
Del Val pounding Albright 21-9.
Did I mention how I feel about Week 11?
November 15th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
You might have — I hear ya!
November 15th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Ithaca and cortland heading into the fourth quarter.
Quick numbers check..
Total offense – Ithaca 368, cortland 240
Keep in mind, Ithaca is playing without its’ starting quarterback Dan Juvan and starting running back Thomas Begerstock.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Good reminder, John — lays serious doubt on Cortland defense heading into the playoffs, even if they win today.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Good thing for McGraw. I’m getting a ‘not enough bandwidth’ on Cortaca Jug, thwarting my three-rivalry-games-on-video-at-once plan.
Though maybe that’s why there’s not enough bandwidth
November 15th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Indeed. It’s why I’m here.
What then does the DePauw pummelage say about Wabash, man-on-the-scene?
November 15th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
DePauw punts. Wabash out of TOs with 0:38 left in the half ball on DePauw 35.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Plymouth State is in like Flynn, for anyone following closely. Up 30 with 10 mins to go. That’s another bid down, we almost have half a field!
November 15th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Wabash complete to the 18 but short of a first down. Hudson spikes with 011 left.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Spencer Whitehead coming out for a field goal, 33-yard attempt and DePauw takes timeout.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Touchdown Ithaca.
Brian Grastorf with a 1-yard quarterback sneak to cap off a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Ithaca’s offensive game-planning has been excellent as they have capitalized on lots of short throws by Grastorf who has now thrown for 264 yards.
Ithaca 28-13, 1147 4th
November 15th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Plymouth State is in: 46-16 win against Maine Maritime.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Whitehead misses wide right. Thoughts by some that Alex Fitch might’ve gotten a piece of this one too but we don’t agree.
November 15th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
LaGrange 5yd TD pass (Having static on the line did not hear the receiver).
12:32, 3Q LaGrange leads 14-10
November 15th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
John, Pat and Gordon all with the ‘It was a dark-and-stormy-night leads up top. Nice.”
From the Farmville area, Halftime looks really boring. I bet the tailgates (out of Penn Atlantic’s view) are hoppin’ though!
November 15th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
UW-Whitewater has taken a 14-0 first quarter lead over UW-Platteville. WW scores on 2 Levell Coppage rushing TD’s.

Big play on that possession was a pass interference penalty on DePauw MLB Tarren Collins — set up Wabash at the DePauw 15. Was a six-play, 39-yard drive.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
i think that stinks. But c’est la vie.

Over two hours and just starting 4Q?
November 15th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Fourth-and-3 coming up for DePauw from the Wabash 25. It would be a 42-yard field goal with the wind at the kicker’s back.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Oh, I forgot game on tv! : (
November 15th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Moravian at their own 36. Hail Mary. Deflected by Chris Hartsell 0:03. Moravian takes a knee. Tied at 21.

Alfred 30 Fisher 17, 4th quarter, around 430 to go
St. John Fisher driving with a two-minute offense.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

November 15th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Sorry! Gotta leave the computer and go to work!
Can’t stop babies!
November 15th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Make that 30-24 Alfred, 4:37 left.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Hobart wins a sloppy one and the LL 10-7…
November 15th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Del Val rolls over Albright 34-9. The key play is a fake field goal where Albright’s holder tries to pitch the ball to the kicker down 21-9. Chad Peterman intercepts it for Del Val and returns it for the touchdown.
Lycoming intercepts Leb Val and returns it for a touchdown themselves, leading 23-15 with under two left. If Lyco holds, they are in to the NCAA tournament.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
whew. ugly game on the quagmire/boz, but a win’s a win. all the credit in the world to sr qb and capt rich doyle taking over the game and playing with a separated shoulder.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Well,
That was a huge waste of time trying to watch The Game on Penn Atlantic and Cortaca on whoever. On computers where I’ve previously never had a problem watching audio I got basically … a picture that was way behind udpates I was getting here and repeated itself when it got to the end of its rope.
I don’t know if I overloaded my network or what, but basically anything but D3football.com today has been a big waste of time.
Thought I’d share.
I’m going to play with my kids. I’ll check scores and The Dose from my iPhone.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Attendance here today: 11,423.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Such is life.
I’m rather frustrated myself.
Clearly I meant “watching video” though. Watching audio is really difficult!
November 15th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Lycoming stops Leb Val on fourth and one, takes a knee and clinches the MAC’s automatic bid. Del Val, Albright and Lycoming share the title but the Warriors have head-to-head wins against both.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Bridgewater is kneeling down, up 37-26 with under two minutes.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
RPI is upset by Merchant Marine… Hobart wins the LL outright
November 15th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
CNU beats Ferrum to win the USA South, 13-10.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Kean bets Montclair S. 21-17 Wooster beats Wittenberg.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Sure, if they’re needed to be the 1 in the North. A Wabash loss and a North Central loss or move West.
Also if Muhlenberg pulls it out, they could be a 1 in the East.
There have been 1-loss No. 1 seeds before, I think. Then everybody’s back in it.
It’s rare though. (Lycoming 8-1, 2003 South; Rowan 8-2, 2004 East … maybe non-div losses though)
November 15th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Whitewater’s Jeff Schebler sets the FG career mark with a 36 yarder.
Warhawks up lead to 31-…opening minutes of 3rd quarter.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Macon with a lead on Hampden-Sydney late, up 10 after a fumble return for a touchdown.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
So the East probably has 2 or 3 teams imported. My worst d3 nightmare.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
With Catholic losing, Randolph-Macon is in if it hangs on.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
budcrew — you need to stop living in 1998.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Keith: I hope that MUC isn’t imported, but I understand the whole “pick the best 4 and work the brackets around them” deal. I guess having MUC in the East is the region’s penance for its parity, apparently.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
…that’s 31-7 Whitewater…
November 15th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Moravian wins in OT
November 15th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Alfred blocks the PAT with less than 2 minutes left, it’s 30-30.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
SJF-AU going into OT.
November 15th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
saxons: holy crow. Fisher-Alfred going to OT.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Millsaps pulls away late to win 31-14. Ugly game for the Majors.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
SJF gets 3 on theor first possession; 33-30 in OT.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
LOL… AU gets the TD as I was typing that last comment. Saxons win 36-33.
Go Saxons!
November 15th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Final in Crawfordsville: 36-14 Wabash. I know the site is going a little haywire so please take it easy on the refresh button.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
trevor bork td catch after a fisher fg… au wins 36-33
November 15th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Great. Bridgewater beats Catholic, Macon comes back to beat Sydney (I had a feeling this was the year since they’d started playing well of late) and I didn’t get to see it.
Wonderful!
Hi four-loss playoff team!
November 15th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Wow, SJF got bumped too. So Ithaca doubled up.
Wait, every rivalry game was an upset.
Ithaca > Cortland State
DePauw > Wabash
R-MC > H-SC
Moravian > Muhlenberg.
I wonder if Hanover beat Franklin too.
At least I had my trusty D3football.com to follow it all.
Voting in this week’s poll / not easy = same.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Carleton ended a big drive with a field goal and leads St. John’s 10-7 with 50 seconds left.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Good Lord. The carnage continues.
This means Ithaca is out of Pool C by way of Pool A, Montclair State, Hampden-Sydney are out by way of defeat.
Maybe it gets so deep two-loss teams start thinking they’re back in the mix … but I don’t think it should come to that. W&J is happy I guess. RPI. I guess we’ll have to do the two-loss team research though.
Cortland State & Muhlenberg blew chances at No. 1 seeds.
Maybe Willamette West, NC North, MUC East and Millsaps south … and that wasn’t pretty.
Otterbein needed OT.
Lycoming is in, thanks to Del Val whooping up on Albright.
Just typing/thinking out loud here.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I have a feeling that SJ-F is going to replaying that blocked PAT in their heads all winter.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
And three plays later, SJU is in the end zone, up 14-10 with 16 seconds to go.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
A two loss team may get into Pool C
November 15th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Is there a gremilin in the scoreboard or did they move the Regent’s Cup to the afternoon?
November 15th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
If Redlands, RPI, UW Whitewater, or UW Stephens Pointe loses then a two loss team will move into Pool C. Pat or Keith, who do you think should be worthy?
November 15th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Now I see what has fooled someone. They changed the teams on Frostburg’s live stats but left up the Apprentice score.
November 15th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
my pool c right now looks like this
Hardin Simmons
UW Whitewater
Redlands
Wash and Jeff
Otterbein
RPI
November 15th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
with W&J pounding Waynesburg 42-9 and all the teams losing today does this maybe sneak them in somewhere?
November 15th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Presidents: They’re looking a lot better, I’ll say that.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
If you were harboring any thoughts about Northwestern, stop. St. Thomas 41-0 F.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
WOW…..RPI just lost to Merchant Marine….that means that a two loss team will be in the field as a Pool C choice. The selection committe has a very very tough job.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
when looking at the two loss teams, I would think that Hartwick, Rowan, and Wooster would be the cream of the crop. Without looking closely at the numbers I think that Hartwick would seem to be the choice. What do you think Pat and Keith?
November 15th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I hope that Redlands can get in as a Pool C bid.
What chaos!
Very pleased down here in the ASC.
Thank you Moravian! That is a big help! I have to believe that Millsaps and UMHB vault into 1st and 2nd seed.
Good job, Bridgewater and RandyMac!
LaGrange gets the award for the biggest turn-around of the season and is probably rewarded with a trip west.
Thank you DePauw! The Wabash OWP/OOWP contribution to the SCAC is a big help.
CNU and Wesley can now have that game that was canceled! I think that they would rather play it in November than September!
Do we see #4-seed HSU go to #2-seed UMHB?
November 15th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Doesn’t the Trinity loss at Centre last week loom large now!
November 15th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
also when looking at two loss teams….
what about depauw and moravian who had big wins..
what about Johns Hopkins?
Do any of the teams that lost today get consideration (ie Montclair, etc).
It will be interesting
November 15th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Ralph,
I think Redlands has it clinched if they win
November 15th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Hadn’t seen the RPI loss to USMMA when I posted this.
Wow. 23-21 to a 2-7 team.
The lack of clutch today is epic.
Dream scenario for W&J, Curry, et. al. is in effect.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Redlands too. Thanks Ralph.
LaGrange is in … are they a flight to anywhere? I assume yes, but it would be nice if the Texas twosome could get broken up.
Oh wait, LaGrange to Millsaps, UMHB/HSU, huh? Boo.
Unless they mix and match those, but UMHB and Millsaps are the ones within distance and they are the high seeds/home games.
Oh well, I’ll worry tomorrow.
November 15th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
With the Wabash loss today, could Trine possibly get as high as a two seed?
November 15th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Oh, and Pool C Redlands would have to go somewhere too.
Maybe Redlands to Willamette, HSU to Oxy, LaG to Millsaps and a random flier to UMHB
Yeah, not happening.
Later on …
November 15th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Off top, I doubt it, but it depends where the 1 seeds end up. Certainly MUC and NC are higher-ranked North Region teams, but if one or both becomes a one elsewhere, then maybe.
Stay tuned for the Pat/Gordon analysis later tonight. That’ll run through all the scenarios as the committee would and give spot-on insight.
November 15th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
With U of St. Thomas crushing Northwestern 41 – 0 and the fact they beat Carlton, had the win stolen from them by a “verified replay” touchdown win over St. Johns and lastly a DIII Record 6 overtime loss to the Ole’s wouldn’t you think they might have a long/hard look by the selection committee for a AL berth?
November 15th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Trine ranked above CWRU is a crock!
November 15th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Don’t look now Redlands is behind 7.
November 15th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
cwru,
Don’t underestimate Trine. I am not sure how many teams in the D3 can say that they control the line as well as Trine on both sides of the ball. Rush D ranked #2 (behind MUC) with only 51.1 yds/game and Rush O avg 191 yds/game. Those kind of stats don’t exactly scream crock?
November 15th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Big Cal Lu INT deep in their own territory, 1:10 left with Redlands trailing, 3rd and long.
November 15th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Redlands gets the ball back and drives to the Cal Lu 40 but runs out of time.
November 15th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Salisbury needs to get a look as a Pool C two-loss team Too!!
November 15th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
But two one-point wins over two-win teams do yell crock!
If a two loss team makes it shouldn’t it be Cal Lu whose two losses are to undefeated teams?
November 15th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Speaking of two loss teams, what about DePauw who has a dominant win against a (former) top-five opponent?
November 15th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
I’m very curious about how today’s results will impact the NCAA regional rankings, and how those rankings might affect selections.
In the South region, where the 7th ranked team in the region was also considered on the bubble for the NCAA tourney, the 2nd, 5th, and 6th regionally ranked teams all lost. And so did the 8th ranked team. Does this help Washington & Jefferson *and* Salisbury?
In the East region, the 1st, 3rd, and 5th ranked teams all lost, which may not represent that huge of a shake up when all is told, considering most folks here seemed to believe the #3 team was on the bubble before any games were played today.
November 15th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Who gets last spot? I think that it is hartwick, rowan, or wooster. Depauw, Cal Luth, and Moravian have a claim with their play today. It is going to be interesting.
November 15th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Don’t worry about the Grizzlies! They took care of their business with a dominating shutout of Hanover by the score of 34-0 in the wind and rain at Faught Stadium to retain the Victory Bell. The conditions were awful, but the Grizzlies held Hanover to 1 yard rushing for the entire game….1 yard!! My guess is with Depauw beating Wabash, Franlin likely gets a rematch with Trine.
November 15th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
The newly elected Commander in Chief has the right idea:
NEW YORK – It’s not exactly at the top of his agenda, but President-elect Barack Obama says there should be a college football playoff to determine a [BCS] national champion. In fact, he knows exactly what he wants – an eight-team playoff.
In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Obama addresses a subject college football fans have debated for many years, and says he will use his influence to create such a system.
“If you’ve got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there’s no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system,” he tells CBS’ Steve Kroft in an interview to be broadcast Sunday.
According to Obama’s proposed system, eight teams would play over three rounds to settle the national champion.
“It would add three extra weeks to the season,” he said at the conclusion of a wide-ranging interview. “You could trim back on the regular season. I don’t know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I’m going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it’s the right thing to do.”

I don’t think Randolph Mason has played enough Division III teams to be eligible for the Playoffs. I’m pretty sure they aren’t even being discussed tonight.
Seriously though, this is going to be a fun, fun Sunday… following a crazy, crazy Saturday.
