Game day from the madness
Nov
2008
I’m in Naperville, Ill.; Keith McMillan is in Westerville, Ohio; John McGraw is in Geneva, N.Y.; and Frank Rossi is in Belton, Texas. And there are photographers elsewhere and of course, your eyes are everywhere.
Twelve weeks into the Division III football season, and while us Triple Takers were fairly unanimous with our first-round predictions, there are still lingering questions.
We all think Wheaton will win, but here’s what Trine has on its side. Trine has a 10-game home winning streak going and hasn’t lost at Shive Field since a 21-7 loss to Hope on Oct. 28, 2006. That’s another era in Trine/Tri-State football, to be sure.
We all picked Hardin-Simmons to lose to Mary Hardin-Baylor. I know I looked at the last meeting and took into account that Mary Hardin-Baylor is really banged up. But we all picked the home team to lose, and that’s a red flag. This game is too close to call, and I think our scores reflected that. That’s also why we sent a broadcast crew, since we think this is going to be a great game.
Plus, there’s the weather. It should hold scores down across the North Central and Mount Union bracket. Is it enough to prompt an upset? There aren’t many games being played on grass today, but the ball will still be affected.
We’ll update. You’ll update. It’ll be a great time. Madness on!

There’s grass here at Otterbein Pat, as well as a very nice Division III facility, but it might as well be concrete. It snowed yesterday and a little bit remains around the outside of the track, but mostly it’s just hand-numblingly cold today. I assume the receivers and DBs these days all wear gloves, but anyone who doesn’t is going to feel it on their hands.
Otterbein is hyped up for its first playoff appearance; Franklin traveled well, three hours from the Indianapolis area to just north of Columbus, Ohio, and is out to erase the memory of a 44-42 loss to North Central last season.
We’re about to kick here, and I think this game is one of the biggest toss-ups on the board today.
Feel free to chime in from wherever you are.
And thanks to both SIDs here for helping me get online; Couldn’t snag the wireless, but they had an extra ethernet cable
Remind me later to tell you about the Franklin tailgate too. Stone Station’s No. 1 spot I think is in trouble.

November 22nd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
21-0. Ely INT return. That’s exactly the kind of game R-MC can’t win.
Here, Franklin and Otterbein showing glimpses, but trading blows & remaiining scoreless. About 13 mins. in

CNU scores on 1st drive. 3-0
W&J answers with TD 7-3 W&J
CNU replies with TD 10-7 CNU
W&J takes 2 plays to score – 14-10 W&J
second qt just underway. OGUN has over 60 yds already. CNU has 106 total yds. W&J now at 137. CNU struggling on current drive. Will see first punt of day on next play. CNU D has to hold or the game will start to get out of hand.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Yeah, you are not the first. Sign out and sign back in, or use ie. (or Safari)
Here, scoreless to start the second qtr. … Otterbein gets some nice DL penetration & causes a fumble on the first play. Two plays later the Cards fumble it right back to Franklin.
It’s not really defense making plays or offense not for either side … just a good job of one unit not allowing the other to get consistent.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Lycoming 0 Hobart 0 2nd Quarter in the snow
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
W&J offense is lighting up the field. Averaging 11.9 yds per play. CNU is in game only becuase of time of possession. 14 minutes to 4.
Uh Oh!!!!! TD W&J. 2nd TD pass by Swallow. 21-10 W&J. 9:43 left in 2nd qt. This is not looking good for CNU. W&J is able to move the ball at will. CNU defense has no answers.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Otterbein DL getting a lot of pressure, but on 4th-and-3 Chad Rupp gets off a quick hitch for a first down, then tosses a touch pass to the front corner of the end zone for Franklin’s 7-0 lead.
Looks like W&J is up 21-10.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 pm
W&J intercepts ball
CNU then recovers fumble on next play.
Issue – starting kicker for W&J is not playing. Backup K has short kickoffs. CNU starts on average around their own 40-45
NEW QB in for CNU.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Gaines..CNU QB…fumbles and runs for 20 yd LOSS!!!
W&J has ball again. Curt Jones has 83 yds rushing.

Lycoming 7 Hobart 0 2nd Quarter
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm
My goodness…these games out there sound like turnover city!!!
Can’t expect to win in the playoffs turning the ball over….
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Another W&J TD. 28-10. Swallow is controlling this game. 11-15 191 yds and 3 TD passes. 3:09 left before the CNU D can go get some oxygen in the locker room.
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
CNU has gotten away from Ogun. He has negative yds in second qt. I know when your down 18 you want to pass to get back in it. But this is not the team to do that with. Drive by running!!!!! Get a TD and go into the half down by 15 or 11. Give the ball to OGUN and control the ball!!!!
4th down CNU…..pass pass pass….geez

November 22nd, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Big play here … Ott punts from deep in its own territory, but DL Mike King tips a Chad Rupp pass on the first play, intercepts the pass and runs it to the 10, and Rafferty keeps it himself to score on the next play.
1 play, 10 yards in 0:05 on the drive … suddenly flipped from Franklin looking to add a quick one before the half to trailing for the first time today.
MUC just went up 28-0.
W&J just went up 28-10.
Cortland 17-6 at the half.
It’s on the scoreboard too
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
28-17 W&J at the half. CNU racks up 100+ yds in 1st qt but goes negative in 2nd half. W&J will be hard to stop in second half.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Yep, sorry, 28-17 at W&J
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
oops…CNU goes negative in 2nd qt

Not looking good for UW-Whitewater. St. John’s just plows down the field on their first drive for a TD and then picks off a Jeff Donovan pass on the Warhawks’ next drive.
7-0 SJU 5:30 1st Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Bad snap on a SJU punt gives UW-Whitewater the ball on the SJU 25.
4:30 1st Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Several games at the half and a few close to getting there. Franklin drove 73 yards in 1:38 to tie it on another Chad Rupp-to-Logan Deffner TD pass. They got down there on a Rupp rollout and a Deffner adjustment, but Deffner did that off-balance fall. Rupp hit him with a 3-yard strike to tie it.
Then Otterbein nearly didn’t field the kick … but anyway, 14-all here. Otterbein getting quite the D-Line push and having its DBs tackle well in the open field, while Franklin is getting to the QB and forcing the pitch to the pitchback every time on the option.
I guess I delayed, Plymouth and Cortland are probably in the 3rd by now.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
After CNU scored on about the second play of the second qt, Ogun has touched the ball 3 times. I wish I could call the lcoker room. Ogun touches the ball 3 times and then W&J takes a big lead. It’s not rocket science. For CNU to have a chance they need to give the ball to the second leading rusher in d3 (only .04 yds per game from top rusher). Why would you take the ball out of his hands? He had over 60 yds in the first qt!!!!! Is he hurt?
Also – nice halftime show on radio. CNU radio interview Steeler coach Mike Tomlin. He addressed the Captains last night. CNU coach Kelchner recruited Tomlin at William and Mary. Tomlin is a Newport News native.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
BTW, free video broadcast of the UWW-SJU game on PennAtlantic.
UWW fumbles on a 3rd and goal at the SJU 1-yard line. 1st and 10 SJU.
7-0 SJU 1:00 1st Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Anyone from d3football know why I have two comments above from about 30 minutes ago that state “your comment is awaiting moderation”?
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
hobart outgained lyco 208 to 138 in the first half, 13 to 6 in first downs, and 72 to 29 yards rushing. hope hobart can keep up the momentum in the second half.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
UWW running backs can’t seem to get anything going today. Looks like SJU D-line is just dominating and filling gaps.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Watching some Case-Wabash video while they’re at the half here.
CWRU looks like a cool place to play.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:39 pm
35-17. CNU D gave up the second 4th and 5 in the red zone. W&J is not kicking FG’s with the backup K in the game. Of course, they don’t need to when they can convert 4th and 5 at will. CNU stops those 2 plays and it’s 21-17 and CNU possibly controls the clock even more …..shoulda coulda woulda….frustrating.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Oh, that was Cortland audio I had on at the same time. Now wonder it didn’t match up.
Back underway here in Westerville.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:40 pm
UWW gets it close to the end zone again but can’t put it in. Schebler Field Goal.
7-3 SJU 10:12 2nd Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
About 12:00 left in the half. HSU Feaster to Carillo TD pass. Tied at 14.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Cortland just had a big TD called back for an illegal shift, but still up 24-6.
Here, Franklin forces a 3-and-out to start the 3rd, then there was a Rupp quick screen to Zmick and he stepped out at the 32; next play is Rupp to Logan Deffner for another TD.
Franklin is dangerous when it gets in rhythm.
F 21-14.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm
UMHB 21, HSU 14. 9:54 left in the half.
UMHB scored on a run.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm
4th and 3 for CNU at the W&J 11….Ogun runs for TD. CNU going for 2……
No good. 35-23……not sure why you go for 2 at this point…..kick PAT and be down by 11 – where a FG and THEN a TD with 2 pt conversion ties it. Now, CNU HAS to score 2 TDs.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Jeff Schebler kicks another field goal for the Warhawks, now trailing the Johnnies by only one.
7-6 SJU 5:15 2nd Q

Hobart 17 Lycomg 7 3rd
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Otterbein strikes right back, using Franklin’s no-huddle against them. The Cards stalled on first and goal though and Ott kicked a 21-yd FG to cap a 9-58-2:55 drive.
21-17.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
NEWS FLASH 1:54 left in 3rd. W&J just punted for the first time.
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
UWW defense forces another punt deep in SJU territory. 1st and 10 UWW at the Johnnie 29.
7-6 SJU 3:30 2nd Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
CNU gets back in game by running. D stops W&J for the first time so CNU thinks passing is a good idea now……aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
STOP PASSING THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4-15 AND 1 int plus Ogun doesn’t get the ball when you pass!!!!!!
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Jeff Schebler kicks his third field goal of the day for the Warhawks. The offense is doing a great job of getting into SJU territory, but they seem to sputter once they get in the red zone.
9-7 UWW over SJU 1:55 2nd Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm
6:09 2Q; HSU’s Feaster scrambles (about 15-something yards) for a TD. PAT good. Tied at 21. This was a 92-yd drive.
Frank Rossi says Curry leads Ithaca 18-14 mid way thru the 3rd qtr.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:00 pm
End of third. As you can tel, I’m frustrated. CNU is 4-15-1 and 29 yds passing. There is 15 minutes left in game. Defense is playing a little better. Why go to your weakest part of the offense to try to get back into the game? I just don’t get it. Ogun is now up to 90 yards. Down only by 12.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Ott forces three-and-out, takes the punt at midfield and on 3rd-and-17 at midfield, Rafferty throws a rope to Tanner McCormick for a 41-yard TD.
24-21.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Ithaca is now leading Curry 21-18 with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Stellman gets picked off for the 3rd time this season… Sulo 30 yard TD run.
20-10 NCC. TMC missed the kickoff and has the ball on their own 8 yard line.
Now they are driving…. to the NCC 21
The Saints are moving the ball…but can’t have anymore mistakes.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Hobart’s Offense is humming: Hobart 23 Lycoming 7 mid-way thru 3rd
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Pat’s partner is spot on… Wenger is a difference-maker. Allowing them to run the cover 2 behind him to defend the pass.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
(Not humming like MUC though) MUC leads 56-0
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
2 straight sacks by NCC after TMC got to the 21 yard line.
4th Down at the 35 yard line. NCC timeout. 1:27 left.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
This could be last quarterback with the ball in his hands.
Rupp rolls out, badly underthrows his reciever … Skips off Otterbein’s DB’s hands and right into Tony Gregory’s hands.
28-24.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Stellman’s pass is picked off at the 5 by Wenger. Just as good as a punt.
Sounds like he missed an open receiver and held it too long.
Sulo carries to the 15 with 1:08 left in the first half.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
UW-Whitewater forces a St. Johns fumble at midfield and the Warhawks recover with :55 to go in the half. Donavan completes some big passes to get to the SJU 1/4 yard line with :03 remaining. Coppage can’t run it in and the half ends with a 9-7 Warhawk lead.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
TMC’s db’s are playing badly. Franthorpe completion to the TMC 30.
Another 14 yard completion and NCC is in business about to blow this open with 43 seconds left.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
CNU D stopped W&J again. Offense drives but stalls on 26 yd line….missed a 4th and 4 conversion with an incomplete pass.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm
all my comments are now saying “your comment is awaiting moderation”. can anyone see them or am I chatting with myself?
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
intentional grounding with 23.5 seconds left. Franthorpe threw left-handed and ball didn’t reach the LOS. Possibly a big break.
Saints need to hold… 3rd down at 22.
INT at the goal line by Matt Clark… LB. TMC will run a play as they dodge a bullet.
20-10 Halftime NCC
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
cnu85 – I see the comment that you posted at 2:12. I guess it’s working OK.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Did u see the one I posted at 2:11 just before it about the CNU D?
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
cnu85 – I’m getting the same thing on longer posts. I’ve seen it happen before, too. Is anyone moderating/approving posts on gameday? Or should I try to keep my posts shorter to avoid the filter?
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Thanks Warhawk
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
CNU goes for it on 4th down on own 25…sacked. That’s game…3:59 let
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Otterbein drove back down the field with a couple Jack Rafferty third-down conversions and a touch throw for the TD. 31-28 at 2:50 of the 3rd.
It’s basically a QB clinic all of a sudden, after points were hard to come by in the first half.
In fact as I typed this, Rupp hits Logan Deffner for a TD for the fourth time today … MISSED PAT, instead of 35-31 it’s 34-31 with 1:33 in the third.
This game got WOW fast.
I see Ithaca and Curry are in a battle.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
passing game is difference.CNU out rushes W&J. But Swallow passes for 250+, CNU passes for 48
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
geez…can’t get any game stat posts in…..awaiting moderation
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Difference in game is passing game
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
y’all can look at stats…I’m outta here
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I just approved 12 posts in moderation by several regular posters … not sure what put them there — there are certain triggers — but they should be showing to everyone now.
Here, the scoring hasn’t slowed one bit … Otterbein runs a halfback pass but the HB fumbles, Franklin recovers on the 20 and turns it into another TD.
41-31 at 0:51 mark. Rupp to Tony Gregory, his second of the day. Rupp’s 6th TD pass, I believe.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Touchdown Ohio State! (Sorry, I went there for grad school.)
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Otterbein three-and-out and we’re still at the 0:22 mark.
Rupp getting rid of it much more quickly than before. Otterbein was getting DL pressure on Franklin pretty well.
Quarter.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
TD CNU 35-29
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Thanks Kieth!
Just about to start 2nd half in Whitewater. Johnnies will get the ball first.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:29 pm
on sides kick…perfect kick…..W&J recovers
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:30 pm
that Curry/Ithaca is a HUGE surprise… wow
They played MUC very tough last year in Alliance…
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Congrats W&J. Ogun finished with 160 yds. Passing game was difference.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
bart kicks its 2nd fg on the day.
26-7 hobart with less than 13 mins to play in the 4th qtr
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm
CNU holds W&J to 95 yds in second half. Not enuff. Congrats W&J 35-29
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Curry has the ball down 3 with about 2 minutes to go.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
This game just gets weirder.
Otterbein gets a three-and-out, blocks the punt and then the guy who scoops it has a fairly clear path down the sideline and stops … apparently the idea of “you can’t advance a something or other” popped into his head. The punt was blocked straight up in the air and was close to the line of scrimmage. Refs are deciding if if went over the LOS … either way Otterbein great field position, would not be surprised if they score a TD in the next 2 minutes
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Ogun has 160 yds
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Curry has the ball on Ithaca’s 12 with 1 minute to go. Hang on Bombers!
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
CNU falls short yet again to W&J. Another late comeback comes up short. Down 35-17, CNU fights back to make it 35-29. Second half defense for CNU was outstanding. Good Luck to the Presidents!!
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Touchdown Curry with 32 seconds to go. Dammit.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
TMC takes the 2nd half kickoff..
Will start on the 45 yard line.
The Saints miss the big-play ability of Kendall Owens (out with MCL).. Anthony Knott will be needed in this half also.
Collier fumble, recovered by TMC. 3rd and 4.
TMC is stopped and will punt.
They need a turnover to take back momentum on this drive.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
26-21 Curry after getting the 2-point conversion. Ithaca has all 3 timeouts.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Levell Coppage finally gets a few good runs strung together but gets landed on and has an ankle injury. Hopefully nothing serious, he’s walking off the field under his own power.
9-7 UWW 11:20 3rd Q
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
stupid penalties, turnovers and db play have cost the Saints today.
NCC is already at their own 45.
NCC is averaging 9.8 yards a snap. Did I say we need a turnover?
Another long pass by Franthorpe and is in business again.
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Ha. Otterbein scores & trails 41-38. 12:49 left.
Aided by a very obvious pass int on a 3rd-and-8 completion.
Scoreless at the end of the 1st and all 14s at the half. No regrets about the game I picked, although I’m sure it’s not the only awesome one going on.
