PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — UW-Whitewater clinched a share of its fourth-straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, beating UW-Platteville 52-13 in the regular season finale on Butch Leitl Field at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The fifth-ranked Warhawks must await an at-large berth into the NCAA III playoffs to defend their national champion as co-WIAC champ UW-Stevens Point earns the league's automatic berth by virtue of head-to-head play.
Levell Coppage ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns, Antwan Anderson ran for two more, and Jeff Donovan threw for a pair for the Warhawks, now 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the WIAC. John Akim threw for 227 yards and a score, and both Nick Grosso and Aunton Terry had more than 100 receiving yards to lead the Pioneers (4-6, 2-5).
Coppage had touchdown runs of one and two yards in the first quarter; Anderson scored on a six-yard run and Donovan connected with Aaron Rusch from 46 yards out in the second. Akim's three-yard touchdown pass to Jake Wiederholt with 1:02 to play capped a 70-yard Pioneer drive, making the score 28-7 at the half.
Jeff Schebler kicked a 36-yard field goal in the third quarter, breaking the NCAA III record with 53 career FGs. Donovan hit Cory Robinson on a 46-yard flea-flicker, and both Antwan Anderson (9 yards) and Jake Andersen (8) scored running TDs. Genslinger's three-yard run with 16 seconds left capped the scoring.
The game is played in memory of George Chryst, who guided the Pioneers from 1979 to 1992. Players of the game, as voted upon by the assembled media, were Donovan and Grosso on offense, and linebackers Kyle Supianoski (six tackles for UWW) and Joe Tinucci (11 for UWP) on defense.
Donovan completed 12 of 16 passes for 231 yards, including six for 135 to Rusch.
Grosso had nine catches for 109 yards, and Terry grabbed eight for 103. Brian Snyder made a game-high 14 tackles for the Pioneers.
UWP bid farewell to 17 seniors prior to the game. They were David Akey, John Akim, Tyson Droessler, Abe Enloe, David Erdman, Mike Genslinger,Ryan Grant, Nick Grosso, Ben Hermus, Matt Janus, Morgan May, Dustin Moor, David Olund, Dean Priebusch, Tim Stephenson, Joe Tinucci, and Brandon Willger.
