Janaro returns as Newport News head coach
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Newport News Apprentice School announced the hiring of Phil Janaro as head football coach.

"I have known Phil Janaro for over 20 years. We are excited to welcome him back to the Apprentice School to lead our football program," said Athletic Director Bill Casto. "Phil is not only an outstanding coach but a person with unquestioned integrity who really cares about the people he coaches. He brings to us a wealth of experience and proven success on all levels including our program."

Janaro, 58, was the coach of the Builders from 1985-87. His overall record was 16-12, and his last team in 1987 went 8-2. His resume includes stints as head coach at Bethel, recruiting coordinator at Illinois, and assistant coaching stops at Davidson and William & Mary. He is well known for his successful efforts not only in coaching but also in recruiting.

Janaro worked in the football division of International Marketing Group (IMG) along with the training of their rookie classes for the professional draft from 1995 through 2000.

He returns to the area where coaches and sports fans remember him as a former assistant coach at William and Mary where he served under Jim Root and current head coach Jimmye Laycock. "Phil spent two stints on my staff here at W&M and did a fine job. He is a hard worker and the Apprentice School is very fortunate to attract someone of his ability and high character," said Laycock.

"I am excited about returning to the Apprentice School because of the quality of education for the young people at the school along with the opportunities available for them upon graduation," said Janaro. "The school is committed to having quality athletic programs and I look forward to being a part of that."
