Statistical spotlight
The Mary Hardin-Baylor and UW-Whitewater run defense have been getting the job done all season and did so in a big way on Saturday in Belton, Texas, but the pass defense was strong as well in Whitewater's 7-3 win. Mary Hardin-Baylor safety Josh Kubiak had two passes broken up on consecutive plays, both in Crusader territory, as the defense did not allow a point and gave up just 2.3 yards per play. Gabe Schultz, a starting cornerback for Whitewater, had an interception in Warhawks territory and broke up two passes, one of which was in the end zone. The other forced a Mary Hardin-Baylor field goal attempt, which was missed. Defense reigned … or was that rained … at Bates, where Colby needed four overtimes to pull out a 10-7 win. Colby managed just 185 yards of total offense while limiting Bates to 155. Despite getting the ball three times each on the 25-yard line going in, the teams combined to move just 16 yards in the first three overtimes, including back-to-back delay of game penalties by Colby followed by a false start in the third extra period. Brian Bachow's 22-yard field goal won it in the fourth overtime for Colby. Bates' only points on the day were a 7-yard fumble return by Eric Obeng for a touchdown off a fumbled forced by Terence Ryan. Mt. St. Joseph won despite going 0-for-8 passing and running for just 104 yards in a 20-6 victory against Defiance. Neil Skirvin booted an 88-yard punt after the team's first three-and-out. MSJ got two of its touchdowns after recovering fumbles on the Defiance 19 and started its other scoring drive on the Defiance 40 after a 29-yard punt. North Carolina Wesleyan scored 22 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to take a 46-28 lead and put the game out of reach at home against No. 18 Christopher Newport. (CNU's touchdown with seven seconds left provided the final 46-34 margin.) The Battling Bishops rolled up 538 yards of total offense and punted just twice on the afternoon. Teron Bush ran for 136 yards and a score on just 13 carries, while Shel Leverette and Orlando Webb each had more than 100 yards receiving.
