St. John's takes flight
St. John's ran for just 62 yards but Alex Kofoed was 22-for-35 passing without an interception and the Johnnies covered an onside kick to hold on and beat Central 21-13 in the West Region first round. Vance Schuring ran for 100 yards for Central but Tim Connell was sacked four times. The Johnnies will head west. Joel Clark threw a touchdown pass to Drew Griggs with 23 seconds left to lift Whitworth past Occidental 27-23. Mary Hardin-Baylor won the regular season meeting and won the rematch on Saturday, beating conference rival Hardin-Simmons 33-21. The Crusaders host Washington and Jefferson, which won 27-23 at Christopher Newport after sprinting out to a 27-0 lead. Springfield's Chris Sharpe put on another show, carrying 28 times for 242 yards before being relieved in the fourth quarter of a blowout of Curry (Photo gallery). The Pride scored the first 42 points and went on to win 42-14, ensuring a home rematch next week against St. John Fisher. The Cardinals held Tom Arcidiacono to 10 yards on 11 carries.
