Mount alum to lead UWW offense After finishing as national runners-up to Mount Union the past two seasons, UW-Whitewater will put its offense in the hands of a former Purple Raider. Jim Zebrowski resigned his position as head coach of Lakeland to become the offensive coordinator at the Whitewater. The 1991 Mount Union alum went 28-13 in four seasons at Lakeland. "This is a bittersweet time because I'm excited about the opportunity I have at Whitewater, but it's hard to leave Lakeland and our players," Zebrowski said in a Lakeland release. "This is an opportunity for me to coach quarterbacks and call the offense for one of the top Division III programs in the country. Everyone is aware of the success they have had there and it's exciting to know that I'll be part of that. It's a terrific opportunity for me and my family." UW-Whitewater has undergone an offseason full of changes. Lance Leipold replaces Bob Berezowitz who retired after 22 years as the Warhawks' head coach. Zebrowski replaces Berezowitz's long-time assistant Stan Zweifel, who will run the offense at conference rival UW-River Falls. UW-Whitewater also graduated starting quarterback Justin Jacobs, NFL draftee wide receiver Derek Stanley, D3football.com defensive player of the year Ryan Kleppe, second team All-American tight end Pete Schmitt and first team All-American tackle Max Sakellaris. First team All-American running back Justin Beaver returns for his senior season. Under Zebrowski, the Muskies never finished lower than second in the Illini-Badger Conference and made their first trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2005. Zebrowski also served as an assistant athletic director at Lakeland. "I'm most proud of the fact that we produced student athletes that played the game hard but also did well in school and contributed to the community," Zebrowski said. "We had relationships with Big Brothers & Big Sisters, the Boys & Girls Club and our players read at several elementary schools in the area. Our student-athletes learned how to give back to the community and I think that helped them create a stronger bond with Lakeland." Lakeland athletic director Jane Bouche said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. | |
