Tiebreaker madness
ATN's take It was a great weekend of action in Division III, but of course, what's coming up in Week 11 is even more interesting, with 10 automatic bids still on the line and at least one requiring a spreadsheet, or at least a sharpened No. 2 pencil to calculate. What's the best way to break a three-way tie, anyway? And how are some conferences planning to do it? Find out more in this week's Around the Nation podcast, as Keith McMillan and Pat Coleman give their take on the upcoming games and the surprises in the 12 automatic bids clinched so far. Since each conference sets its own rules for breaking ties for the automatic bid, and with the limited number of games played in any given football season, there's not exactly a lot of data to work with. So this week, we run down how the remaining 10 conferences' automatic bids will be handed out, they run through the tiebreakers in leagues where they'll be needed, and debate the merit of such tiebreakers in the first place. So get your primer on how the E8 or LL or MIAA will be won. Statistical spotlight
Each week during the regular season we look at some of the key statistical performances from the weekend in Division III football, highlighting one per region. Mount Union has allowed three touchdowns and one field goal all season, with opponents scoring fewer than three points per game. In fact, with two interception returns, two fumble returns and three safeties, the Purple Raider defense has scored more points than it's allowed. Opponents average 17 yards per game rushing and 106 passing. Tyler Sherden outrushed Mount Union's opponents by himself, with 297 yards on 40 carries in Luther's 47-41 double-overtime win against Simpson. He scored five touchdowns. Greensboro defensive end Logan Greene blocked two kicks in a 13-7 loss to Methodist, both on Monarch field goal attempts. On defense, Greene tallied seven tackles, three solo. Hartwick quarterback Jason Boltus recorded 547 yards in total offense as the Hawks defeated Springfield 37-34. He completed 30 of 44 passes for 508 yards, the second-highest passing day of his career, and threw two touchdowns of more than 40 yards (45 and 50 yards).
