Saints nab playoff bid
Thomas More wasn't the first to clinch an automatic bid to the 2008 Division III NCAA playoffs, but it was the most unlikely team to punch a ticket on Saturday. The Saints converted just one of 11 third downs, racked up 106 yards in penalties and allowed 361 passing yards but came out on top against No. 9 Washington and Jefferson, 35-29. Saturday's scoreboard, including game stories. Cortland State clinched the season's first bid to the NCAA playoffs, defeating TCNJ 24-18. No. 3 Wabash clinched a spot in the postseason as well with a 60-7 pasting of Oberlin, while Monmouth crushed Illinois College 78-17 to claim the Midwest Conference's bid. The second UW-Eau Claire/UW-Whitewater game was much different than the first. With the defending national champion Warhawks facing potential elimination from at-large consideration, the No. 6 team came up big at home, with a 40-10 win against No. 19 UW-Eau Claire. No. 10 Wesley got two touchdowns from preseason All-American tight end Jon Lanouette and beat No. 16 Salisbury 36-21. Wesley outrushed Salisbury 226-191. Elmhurst shocked Wheaton and seemingly knocked the No. 15 Thunder from playoff consideration as Matt D'Angelo caught six passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-23 win. No. 18 Otterbein shut out Marietta 55-0 and positioned itself for a climb in the poll. No. 17 UW-Stevens Point lived by the two-point conversion last week and nearly died by it this week but intercepted UW-Oshkosh's pass attempt in a 34-33 overtime win. No. 22 RPI won the final Dutchman Shoes game played on RPI's '86 field, beating Union 25-12 and retaining the Shoes for a third year for the first time since 1959. (Photo gallery.) No. 24 Franklin handed HCAC surprise Rose-Hulman its first conference loss of the season, pounding the Engineers 42-7 (Photo gallery). No. 2 North Central got seven takeaways in beating Illinois Wesleyan 30-7. Catholic remained in line for the ODAC title with a 38-23 win at Emory and Henry behind five touchdown passes and no interceptions from Keith Ricca. Christopher Newport edged North Carolina Wesleyan 27-26 and stayed unbeaten in the USA South. Albright beat Lebanon Valley 31-14 to hang with Lycoming (48-28 winners at FDU-Florham) atop the MAC. The MIAC reverted back into a four-way tie for first place after St. Olaf won at Concordia-Moorhead and Gustavus Adolphus beat Bethel (photo gallery). Wade Mondoux racked up 26 tackles for Maine Maritime in a 42-34 win against Coast Guard, putting the Mariners one game from clinching the other spot in the NEFC title game with Plymouth State. | ||
