Former All-American Davon Cruz dies

Davon Cruz Davon Cruz, a D3football.com All-American at running back, died in a single-car accident on I-95 near Beltsville, Md., Saturday morning, Jan. 1. Cruz was 30.

Cruz left Bridgewater as the all-time leading rusher in school history with 3,986 yards and is in the top five in ten different career categories.

A native of Glen Burnie, Md. Cruz helped lead the Eagles to the 2001 Stagg Bowl, where the Eagles fell to perennial national power Mount Union 30-27. Cruz was named to the All-American team in 2001 after barreling for a single-season record 1,678 yards.

Cruz set a playoff record with a 228 yard performance on November 18, 2001 against Washington and Jefferson. His 20 career 100-yard rushing games is also a career record.

Aside from his football acumen, Cruz also was a track standout, winning the 100 meters at the 2000 Old Dominion Athletic Conference meet.

"He (Davon) had a smile that could light up a room and as a player he brought Division I ability to the Division III level. As the All-American tailback on our 01' Stagg Bowl team, Davon was a key player in our success. We need to keep Carmine (his mom) and the rest of his family in our prayers," said head coach Michael Clark.

Arrangements for the Cruz's services are as follows:

Viewing from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6 at Estep Funeral Home, 1300 Eutaw Place, Baltimore.

Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 7, with a viewing from 10-11 a.m., then services directly following at Empowering Believers Church, 7566 East Howard Road, Glen Burnie, Md.
