UW-La Crosse names four finalists

UW-La Crosse has named its four finalists to be interviewed for the head football coach position, according to the search and screen committee. The four finalists are Joel Dettwiler, defensive coordinator at Wartburg; Tony Jennison, head coach at Macalester; Vince Kehres, defensive coordinator at Mount Union and Jake Moreland, tight ends coach/assistant to the offensive coordinator at Western Michigan.

Dettwiler has served as an assistant coach at Wartburg since 2004 and has been the defensive coordinator the last three seasons. He was hired as the linebackers coach and head strength coach in 2004. A 1997 graduate of UW-Platteville, Dettwiler has helped lead the Knights to a 57-18 record in his seven years as an assistant. Wartburg advanced to the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 2004, 2008 and 2010 after claiming the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.

He served as an assistant coach and director of football operations at UW-Platteville from 2000-04, coaching the defensive backs and linemen. Along with his coaching duties at Wartburg, Dettwiler serves as a lecturer in the computer science and physical education departments. He was a lecturer in UW-Platteville’s general engineering and physical education departments. Dettwiler earned master’s degrees from UW-Madison in 1999 and from UW-Platteville in 2002.

Jennison has served as the head coach at Macalester since 2008. He led the Scots to a 6-3 record in 2010, their first winning season since 1986. Macalester also established several school records last season. He served as the Scots’ defensive coordinator in 2006-07. A 1998 graduate of UW-La Crosse, Jennison was a member of two national championship teams and four conference title squads for the Eagles. He earned his master’s degree from UW-Eau Claire in 2000.

Prior to arriving at Macalester, Jennison was the defensive coordinator and special teams coach at Marietta, where he helped increase the roster size from 45 to 110. The Pioneers recorded their first back-to-back non-losing seasons in 10 years, including a winning record in the highly competitive Ohio Athletic Conference. Jennison was the defensive secondary/special teams coach at UW-Eau Claire (1998-99, 2001-02) and the assistant defensive secondary coach at UW-La Crosse (1997).

Kehres is currently the defensive coordinator at Mount Union, a position he has held since 2005. He served as an assistant for the Purple Raiders from 1998-99 and again from 2000 to present. Mount Union has won seven NCAA Division III titles since 1998 and 12 OAC championships. Kehres, who was named the 2006 OAC Assistant Coach of the Year, has coached offensive and defensive linemen and linebackers at Mount Union.

He also serves as the Purple Raiders’ strength and conditioning coach and recruiting coordinator. Kehres earned his bachelor’s degree from Mount Union in 1998 and his master’s from Ashland in 2002. He currently serves as an instructor in the department of human performance at Mount Union. Kehres was an assistant football coach at Austintown-Fitch High School in Youngstown, Ohio from 1999-2000.

Moreland has been the tight ends coach/assistant to the offensive coordinator at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo since 2004. He has also served as the Broncos’ recruiting coordinator since 2008. Other coaching experience includes the special teams coordinator/offensive assistant at Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) and the tight ends coach at Elmhurst. He also completed a National Football League internship with the Chicago Bears.

A 2000 graduate of Western Michigan, Moreland lettered four seasons with the Broncos and has caught more passes (143) than any other tight end in school history. He ranks second in receiving yards (1,414) and tied for second in touchdowns (13) among tight ends. Moreland earned All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) Second Team honors and was named Western Michigan’s Offensive Most Valuable Player in 1999. He played in the NFL for the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns and was also signed by the Houston Texans.
