Nine-year NFL veteran, and 2002 D3football.com All-America selection Jerheme Urban has been named head coach of Trinity University’s football team.

He replaces Steve Mohr, who announced his retirement on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Mohr was third among active Division III football coaches with 186 career wins and coached Urban's 2002 team to the Stagg Bowl. The Tigers were 5-5 this past season.

"I'd like to thank director of athletics Bob King and the administration at Trinity for their amazing support throughout my career here," said Mohr.  "I'd also like to extend my deepest appreciation towards the players and coaches who laid the foundation for our success over the years. I'm looking forward towards my new position in serving both the university, as well as the football program."

“After Coach Mohr made his decision to retire from coaching, I knew it would take a special person to fill those shoes, as it is never easy to replace a legendary coach,” said athletic director Bob King. “Fortunately, upon looking for potential replacements, we found that the best candidate was already at Trinity. I am flattered that a person as talented and gifted as Jerheme would even consider Trinity as his first head coaching job. I am excited to work with him, and I’m eager to see what the future holds for both Jerheme’s career and for the Trinity football program.”

Urban has served as an assistant coach with Trinity the past two seasons, including the last season as the team’s offensive coordinator.

“It is with great honor that I accept the position of head football coach for the Trinity Tigers. I understand the pride and tradition that comes with wearing the Trinity helmet, and I look forward to the responsibility of leading our young men into a new era of Trinity football,” said Urban.

“Coach Mohr has taught me a lot of football over the past 14 years, and I look forward to building on the foundation that he has put in place. I cannot put into words how humbled I am to be the one asked to lead a program that has seen such a steady voice over the last 24 yards, and I want to thank President Ahlburg and director of athletics Bob King for this opportunity. “

During his nine-year NFL career, Urban played wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs.  He was with the Seahawks and Cardinals teams that reached the Super Bowl, and he finished his career with 91 receptions for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns.

As a Trinity student-athlete, Urban was a two-sport standout, setting school records in both track & field and football.  He was a four-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, establishing new standards in the 400 meter dash, the 4x400 meter hurdles, and the triple jump.

Urban led the 2002 Trinity football team to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, and still holds Tiger records for career touchdowns, career receiving touchdowns, single season touchdown receptions, and single season touchdowns overall.  He was a three-time All-SCAC performer, and was selected as an All-American by D3football.com in 2002.

Urban earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history from Trinity in 2003, then signed to the NFL shortly after. Urban and his wife Emily – a 2003 Trinity graduate and a track & field standout herself – have a daughter and infant twin sons.
