No. 8: 80 yards in 18 seconds
Top 10 finishes of the D3football.com era
St. John's had taken the lead with just 23 seconds left, giving a homecoming crowd of 12,000-plus something to go home happy about.
But those who left early to wait in gridlock getting off campus missed an incredible ending.
After a 14-yard kickoff return by Brandon Hinton to the Augsburg 20-yard line with 18 seconds remaining, Marcus Brumm completed a 48-yard pass to Wesley Waytashek to the St. John's 32-yard line. The Auggies spiked the ball to stop the clock, but on the next play, a pass to the end zone was incomplete. Six-tenths of a second remained on the clock, giving Augsburg one final play, enabling Brumm to complete the game-winning pass to Swanson.
Adding to the ludicrousness of the finish, Augsburg had to come back out on the field because in the excitement, nobody had remembered the Auggies needed to try an extra point. With Augsburg leading by just one, the teams came out minutes later for the extra point. To make sure that no miracle went in the other direction, however, the Auggies snapped the ball and took a knee.
