Wabash hadn't won the Monon Bell in five years, and until the closing seconds of the 2001 game, it looked like the streak was over. Wabash led at halftime and for most of the second half until DePauw tied the game with just 14 seconds remaining.
However, that was 14 seconds too many. Eddie Garza returned the Tigers' kick to the Wabash 39-yard line. Knott hit Casper for a short gain to the 48 with 2.7 seconds showing on the clock.
That set up the final play. The Little Giants fired the same play they had worked on time and again in practice — a designed tipped pass from Ryan Short — and it fell into senior Kurt Casper's waiting arms to give Wabash a 27-21 victory in the 108th Monon Bell Classic.
