Press Release posted by Wartburg
Wartburg puts it two-game win streak on the line Saturday, Nov. 7. Iowa Conference leader and unbeaten Central College of Pella is the Knights’ guest for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Walston-Hoover Stadium.
THE SERIES: If recent history is any indication, fans in attendance might want to be prepared for another white knuckler. Seven of the last 10 meetings have been decided by 17 points or less, and two of the last four contests have gone into an extra session. … The Orange and Black have a 5-3 edge in the last eight meetings which include a 19-17 win at Pella in 2008. Central has a 40-18 lead all-time.
FOR THE FANS: Saturday’s game will have live audio and video available through www.go-knights.net, the Internet home of Wartburg athletics. The broadcast can also be heard over KWAR-FM, 88.9, Waverly, and KWAY-AM, 1470, Waverly, with a 12:30 p.m. pre-game show. Veteran play-by-play man Mark Simpson, former Knights coach and player Terry Goetzinger and fellow Wartburg alumnus Matt Ray provide all the action.
Fans can also follow along via a live events blog at www.go-knights.net, and the game will also be available to Mediacom viewers in the Waverly, Shell Rock and Denver areas through Wartburg Television Channel 8. It will be telecast live and replayed at 8 p.m. and midnight Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m., noon and 4 p.m.
KNIGHTS NOTES: The 2009 squad can still increase the program’s current run of 16 consecutive seven-or-more win campaigns with two victories to close the regular season. They bring a 5-3 overall and 4-2 IIAC record into the weekend. … Senior quarterback Nick Yordi’s 12-of-19, 127-yard, one-touchdown outing at Luther last weekend added another school record to his already-strong resume. He surpassed former standout Gary Walljasper’s career passing total during the contest. Already owning the career yardage and completion marks along with the single-season completion and yardage and single-game completion standards, he is within range of surpassing Matt Wheeler, who like Walljasper was also a signal calling star, for career touchdown tosses. He enters Saturday only four short of passing the current record (59). … Wartburg continues to get high marks on the conference statistics charts. Along team lines, the Knights’ offensive highlights are being second in scoring (28.5 ppg) and third in rushing (174.5 ypg). The defensive strong points are being second against the run (105.2 ypg) and first in lowest pass efficiency defense (107.9). Individually, Yordi is third in passing (218.2 ypg) and fourth in total offense (245.8 ypg). The defense has a trio of players among the top three with junior defensive back Andrew Creary ranking second in tackles (9.8 pg) and interceptions (.5 pg), junior linebacker Blake Suckow being second in tackles for losses (12) and senior defensive back Spencer Policha leading the way in fumble recoveries (four). … Along national statistical lines, sophomore punter Robby Salmon leads Wartburg’s representatives with a top 10 ranking in yards per kick. His 40.5 average, which is first in the conference, is sixth in Division III. Creary is among the top 50 in interceptions (No. 42) and tackles (No. 43).
HOME FINALE: Simpson College of Indianola visits Walston-Hoover Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Nov. 14.
