A LOOK AHEAD: Saturday, Nov. 13, Luther (5-4, 4-3 IIAC) at Simpson (5-4, 4-3 IIAC), Buxton Stadium, Indianola, Iowa, 1 p.m.
RIPKE ON PACE FOR SCHOOL SACK RECORD: Junior defensive lineman Jason Ripke (Newell, Iowa, Newell-Fonda H.S.) is on pace to break the Simpson school record for most sacks in a season. Ripke has posted 15.5 sacks in nine games (he has 24.5 since the start of the 2003). Ripke is only 4.5 away from breaking Carlton Tarver's 1981 school record (19).
He tied the school record for most sacks in a game with four (previously set by Tyler Freeburg, vs Loras, 10/21/00, and by Carlton Tarver, vs Upper Iowa, 10/2/82) against Buena Vista Oct. 23. Ironically, both Ripke and Tarver wear/wore #99 and play (ed) defensive end.
The 6-4 sports adminstration major leads the team in sacks and is the Division III leader in tackles for a loss (3.3). Ripke is second in the nation in sacks (1.9).
Ripke was named Iowa Conference Male Athlete, IIAC Football Player of the Week, and to the the d3football.com Team of the Week (ending Oct. 24) for his Buena Vista performance. Ripke was also named IIAC Football Player of the Week and to the d3football.com Team of the Week ending Sept. 26.
As a team, Simpson has posted 13 sacks against Buena Vista, the second most in a game in school history (18 is the school record, set against Upper Iowa Oct. 2, 1982) and have charted 38 this season. The school record for most team sacks in a season is 57 which was set in 1981.
KAIN NEARS SCHOOL RECORDS: Junior wide receiver Dusty Kain (Prairie City, Iowa, Prairie City-Monroe H.S.) is closing in on several records. Kain's 164 receptions puts him second behind Jim Henderson (196, 1965-68) on the Storm career reception list.
His 2,361 career receiving yards are the second most in school history, trailing only Henderson (2,860). Kain's 22 touchdown receptions are the third most in school history, again trailing Henderson (25) and Jesse Von Behren (23, 1999-2002).
Kain leads the Storm this season with 67 catches for 845 yards and eight touchdowns. He has gone over 100 yards in nine of his last 20 games dating to the start of the 2003 season. A 2003 third team All-American, Kain was selected as a 2004 first team preseason All-American at wide receiver by d3football.com, the Football Gazette, Lindy's Sports, and Street and Smith's College Football Preview. Kain was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week (ending Sept. 5) Sept. 8.

Westphal is the school record holder for career interceptions (19) and career passes defended (54). Westphal holds the school record for passes defended in a season (22), interceptions in a game (3, along with Chad Severin), and passes defended in game (6, with two others).
Westphal was selected as a first team preseason All-American by d3football.com, the Football Gazette, and Lindy's Sports prior to the start of the 2004 season. He was chosen first team All-American by the Division III Sports Information Directors and the Football Gazette All-American last season. He earned second team D3football.com All-American honors as well.
HENTGES AS IN INCHES: Sophomore Eric Hentges (LeMars, Iowa, LeMars H.S.) plays both running back and linebacker. Used mostly in short yardage situations on offense, Hentges has carried the ball 48 times in his career. Of those rushes, he has picked up a first down or scored a touchdown 37 times. Hentges has scored two touchdowns this season and has 13 for his career.
On defense, Hentges is tied for third on the team in tackles with 64 and is third on the squad in sacks with five.
RIDING THE SHUTOUT STREAK: Simpson has not been shutout in its past 181 games. The last time Simpson was shutout was in week four of the 1987 season when Central defeated the Storm 21-0.
HOME COOKING: Simpson has won 12 of there past 15 games in Bill Buxton Stadium since the start of the 2002 season. Central ended the home winning streak Sept. 18 when the Dutch defeated the Storm 13-6. In the past 10 seasons, the Storm have won 43 of 55 games in Indianola.
NCAA STATS: Simpson is ranked in several categories in the NCAA Division III National Statistical Report released Nov. 3. Jason Ripke (Jr., Newell, Iowa, Newell-Fonda H.S.) is tied for the Division III lead in tackles for a loss (3.3). Ripke is second in the nation in sacks (1.9).

THE SERIES: Simpson is playing Luther for the 63rd time with Luther leading the all-time series 36-27. The Storm defeated the Norse 21-7 last season in Decorah.
THE COACH: Jay Niemann is in his third season as Simpson head coach and has compiled a 20-10 record (a .667 winning percentage). Niemann is only the eighth Simpson coach (of 30 all-time) to win at least 20 games as the Storm mentor.
Niemann was named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year in 2003 after leading the Storm to a 9-2 record and the NCAA playoffs. He also serves as the Storm defensive coordinator. Niemann came to Simpson from the University of Northern Iowa where he served as the secondary coach (1997, 2001), linebacker coach (1998-1999), and defensive coordinator (1999-2000) for the Panthers. Northern Iowa made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in 2001 before losing to #1 Montana. Niemann moved to Cedar Falls after a seven-year stint (1989-1996) at Drake University. During Niemann's tenure at Drake, he served as the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, and secondary coach. Niemann joined the Drake staff after serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Washington. Niemann worked with the Huskies' inside linebackers and defensive backs.
Niemann was an assistant football coach at Western Washington University (1985) and received his master's in educational administration from the Bellingham school in 1987. Niemann began his coaching career in 1983 as a student assistant at Iowa State after playing for the Cyclones from 1979-82. He was recruited to Iowa State by former Simpson head coach Jim Williams.
STORM REWIND: Neil Suckow's one-yard run in double overtime propeled Coe to a 24-17 victory over Simpson Nov. 6 in Indianola. Simpson went up 17-14 with 9:52 to go in regulation on a 22-yard Sean Smith field goal. The Storm with held a Kohawk rally late in the fourth quarter, getting the ball back with 1:56 remaining. Using their final two timeouts, Coe forced Simpson to punt. Storm punter Geoff Skinner (So., Ankeny, Iowa, Ankeny H.S.) mishandled the snap, giving the Kohawks possession of the ball at the Simpson 35. Coe drove down to the Storm seven where Mike Herzberger connected on a 24-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
The Kohawks won the toss to begin overtime and elected to play defense. Simpson moved the ball down to the Coe seven, but Smith missed a 24-yard field goal wide left, opening the door for Coe. Kohawk QB Joe Brannen was called for intentional grounding on first down, pushing Coe back to their own 35. After an incomplete pass and a Brannen four-yard run, Herzberger attempted a 48-yard field to win the game. Coe holder Tyler Snaker bobbled the low snap, Simpson broke through the line, forcing the defensive back to throw a pass that was intercepted by Jeremy Scott (Sr., Redfield, Iow, West Central H.S.)
Coe got the ball first in the second overtime. Brannen completed a 24-yard pass to Suckow on the Kohawks' first play, bring Coe to the Storm one-yard line. Suckow rushed for no gain on second down, but broke through the line for what proved to be the gamewinning touchdown. Simpson drove to the Coe 10 on the strength of a Scott McCarty (Jr., Spencer, Iowa, Spencer H.S.) 15-yard pass to Dusty Kain (Jr., Prairie City, Iowa, Prairie City-Monroe H.S.). From the 10, McCarty threw an incomplete pass on first down. Carl Duffy (So., Sac City, Iowa, Sac City H.S.) rushed for two yards on second down. McCarty was sacked by Ross Weymiller on third down. McCarty's pass to Kain in the endzone on the final play of the game was incomplete, keeping Coe's playoff hopes alive.
