Mount St. Joseph 34, Franklin 30
Dec 31, 1969

FRANKLIN, Ind. — Franklin College lost a second Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football decision in as many starts, falling to College of Mount St. Joseph 34-30 at Faught Stadium today.

The setback spoiled the Grizzlies' 2004 homecoming contest and dropped FC to 0-2 in the HCAC and 2-4 overall. Franklin fell by just two points at league foe Anderson University the previous weekend. Mount St. Joseph, however, remained unbeaten, improving to 2-0 in the HCAC and 5-0 in all contests.

The Grizzlies battled back from a 27-15 halftime deficit to pull to within five points when freshman quarterback Andy Clark hit sophomore wingback Danny Sears on a 52-yard touchdown pass play with 3:52 left in the third quarter. Franklin later grabbed the lead 30-27 when Clark hit sophomore split end Darion Reed on a 7-yard TD strike and then tossed the ball to senior running back Joliba Brogan for a successful two-point conversion with 9:38 remaining.

But the Lions responded with a clutch 87-yard drive that ended with the go-ahead points, a 14-yard pass from senior quarterback Bryan Hamrock to tall junior wide receiver Andy Wellendorf with 1:53 to go.

Franklin appeared poised to pull out a dramatic victory, but its 42-yard drive was suddenly ended at the Lions' 27-yard-line when Mount St. Joseph senior defensive tackle Mike Holzinger wrapped up Clark with a sack on a fourth-down play.

Wellendorf opened the scoring with a 26-yard reception from Hamrock on the Lions' first possession. Sophomore running back Mike Lovell scored on a TD rushes of 4 and 69 yards in the second quarter and Hamrock ran in from 5 yards out in the second period.

The Grizzlies' other scores occurred in the opening half when junior split end Devin Lipinski caught a 9-yard TD pass from FC starting QB Ty Fritz midway in the first quarter and Brogan rushed for a 14-yard score in the second period. Lipinski followed his scoring reception with a rush for a two-point conversion.

On the day, Clark completed 19 of 29 passes for 230 yards and Sears had seven catches for 128 yards. Brogan rushed 12 times for 63 yards. Hamrock completed 26 of 38 passes for 336 yards with an interception. Wellendorf had nine receptions for 132 yards and sophomore receiver Don Haggard made six catches for 100 yards. Lovell had 126 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Junior linebacker Clayton Darlage had 13 total tackles for FC while junior linebacker Andrew Ackerman and sophomore defensive end Matt Lawless made 10 total tackles apiece for Mount St. Joseph.
