ALLIANCE, OH
Mount Union (6-0, 5-0 OAC) posted its third shutout in six games this fall with a 59-0 win over visiting Wilmington (1-5, 1-4 OAC) in front of 3,132 fans at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday afternoon, October 13, 2007.
The Raiders have now outscored their opponents 164-0 in the first period of play.
The Raiders tacked on four more second quarter scores capped by Davis' career-best second touchdown reception — a 30 yard completion from Micheli. The junior signal-caller threw four first half touchdown passes — tying a personal single-game best.
Mount Union led 45-0 at halftime
“Bryson (Davis) has had three good weeks of work,” said Head Coach Larry Kehres. “He's a senior who works extremely hard in practice who is taking advantage of his playing time. He deserves a chance to play and has performed very well.”
“It feels good to get a chance to show what I can do,” said Davis. “Putting in maximum effort in practice has gotten me on the field.”
In one half of play, Micheli finished 15-of-23 for 267 yards and four scores. Kmic had 10 carries for 85 yards and one touchdown. Morring had 70 yards on seven touches — including a single-rush career-best 55 yard run.
The Raiders added a third quarter 20 yard touchdown run from running back Trevor Bruney and a fourth quarter two-yard run from running back Scott Panchik — his first career score.
In the game, the Raiders amassed 682 yards of offense compared to 182 yards for the Quakers. Defensively, Mount Union had an interception from cornerback Jonah Wilson — his fifth career pick while tackle Pat McCullough had a game-best 11 hits while linebacker Tony DeRiggi had eight hits. Overall, the Raider first unit defense has allowed just three points in six games played in '07.
"Our defense takes a great deal of pride in shutting teams down," said McCullough. "We strive to be the best and get the shutout every time we step on the field."
For the Quakers, running back Marc Otte had 41 yards rushing — the most against Mount Union's defense this fall. Wide receiver Jeremy Stuckey had five grabs for 57 yards. Defensively, defensive back Bryce Martin had a team-best eight hits while linebackers Chad Adams and Nathan Geers each had six hits and one sack.
Mount Union, the two-time defending National Champion and winner of 29 consecutive games, next hosts Baldwin-Wallace as part of Homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 20 at 1:30 p.m. That contest will be televised via tape delay on WIVM TV52 (Canton/Massillon), Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game can be accessed on UHF channel 52, Time/Warner Digital 585 and Massillon Cable channel 21.
