Right leg, right time

Defense celebrates Mount Union victory
Matt LaVerde, Todd Braden, defensive coordinator Don Montgomery, Mike Miller and Jesse Pearson celebrate Mount Union's win in Stagg Bowl XXVIII.
(By Fred Cockrill, Cockrill Studio)

Junior kicker Rodney Chenos redeemed himself for a fourth-quarter miss by nailing a 20-yard field goal (listen to it here) with one second left in the game to lift Mount Union to its fifth Division III national championship, defeating St. John's 10-7 in a memorable Stagg Bowl XXVIII. It was the second-lowest scoring output in Stagg Bowl and the Purple Raiders tied for the fewest points scored by a Stagg Bowl winner. Keith McMillan recalls a memorable weekend in Salem.

Thanks to our listeners, who made WDCV and the Stagg Bowl broadcast the No. 1 rated station on WebRadio.

West No. 7 lucky again
St. John's Chris Moore

St. John's proved the seventh seed in the West is the place to be, as the Johnnies advance to the Stagg Bowl, defeating south No. 1 seed Hardin-Simmons 38-14 in Abilene, Texas. The Cowboys scored with 28 seconds left in the first half to pull within three points, but did not score the rest of the way as Chris Moore (pictured) and Blake Elliott scored third-quarter touchdowns before backup Jeff Radel capped it off with a minute left. Elliott led the way with 133 yards receiving, helping St. John's become the second consecutive No. 7 seed to advance from the West to advance to the Stagg Bowl since the playoff field was expanded. In Alliance, Mount Union scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter and rolled past Widener 70-30 in the afternoon's first semifinal, as Adam Marino tied a Division III playoff record with 17 receptions.

Rolling into
the
semifinals
One team rolled into the semifinal game in Alliance, Ohio, but it was Widener beating Springfield 61-27, taking advantage of three second-half Pride turnovers to run away with it. In the North Region, Mount Union won, but didn't run away from Wittenberg in a 32-15 decision. St. John's advanced to the national semifinals, defeating Central 21-18, and Hardin-Simmons holds off a last-second drive, knocking down a Trinity pass in the end zone to win 33-30.
