Week Ten Game Summaries

Allegheny 43, Wooster 15
WOOSTER, Ohio — Allegheny's rushing attack, which came into Saturday's game with Wooster ranked first in the North Coast Athletic Conference with an average of 285.4 yards per game, proved to be too much for the Scot defense to handle, as the Gators pulled away in the second half to post a 43-15 victory.

Led by junior Shane Ream, who rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries, Allegheny accumulated 361 yards rushing on 55 carries. Overshadowed somewhat by Ream's effort was senior teammate Jeremy Snyder, who gained 132 yards on just 10 carries. He had a 32-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter, then put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 66-yard scoring run.

The lopsided scoring margin was somewhat of a surprise. The two teams came into the game with identical 5-3 records, and the last three meetings between the to teams had been decided by just a total of five points, with two of the games going into overtime.

Wooster (5-4, 3-3) opened the scoring with an 11-play, 73-yard drive that was capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Jeff Spraggins to junior Chris Cabot.

Allegheny (6-3, 5-1) responded on its ensuing possession, however, as quarterback Joe Cowart ran in from 7 yards out with 57 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked, however, leaving the Scots up 7-6 after the first quarter.

After a Spraggins was intercepted by Tony Simon at the Wooster 20-yard line, Ream scored from 2 yards out just three plays later. The Gators went for two, but Snyder was stopped short of the goal line, giving Allegheny a 12-7 lead. The Gators took a 15-7 lead into the locker at halftime after Aaron Smith connected on a 24-yard field goal.

The Gators started to pull away in the third quarter, as Snyder and Ream scored on touchdown runs of 32 and 21 yards, respectively, to push Allegheny's lead to 29-7.

Sophomore Scott Jones capped a 12-play, 71-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run, and Spraggins connected with junior Darryl Simmons on a two-point pass to close the Scots within 14 points (29-15). But that would be as close as Wooster would get, as Snyder's 66-yard run with 9:51 left put the game out of reach.

Statistically, Allegheny outgained Wooster 511-274. The Gator defense also intercepted four passes, including two by Simon. For Wooster, Jones led the way with 84 yards rushing on 14 carries. Sophomore Rob Hooper gained 69 yards on 17 carries. Spraggins completed 11 of 32 passes for 135 yards, while junior Chris Cabot caught three passes for 54 yards.

Worcester State 14, Westfield State 9
WORCESTER, Mass. — Westfield State dropped a 14-9 decision to Worcester State in its season finale. The Owls finished with a 3-6 record. Westfield stayed with the 7-2 Lancers, but the Owls were unable to capitalize on turnovers and score inside the 20.

All of the scoring for both teams took place in the first half. Westfield's John Frasco of Chicopee kicked three field goals (22, 29, 22 yards) to set a single-game school record.

The Owls recovered a Worcester fumble on the opening kickoff at the 3-yard line but were unable to reach the end zone. Later in the half, Westfield recovered another fumble deep in Worcester territory on a bad center snap on a punt attempt, but the Owls had to settle for another field goal.

Westfield held Worcester minus 23 yards rushing in the game, but the Lancers were effective through the air, completing 17 of 35 passes for 249 yards. Todd Daskowski had touchdown receptions of 9 and 15 yards to stake Worcester to a 14-3 lead with 14:53 left in the first half.

The Owls had several opportunities to upset the Lancers in the game's closing minutes. On a fourth and 4 situation at the Worcester 35 with 1:57 remaining, quarterback Chris Bourget caught his own passing attempt after a defender batted the ball into the air. Bourget decided to run with the ball and was stopped short of a first down by a yard.

Westfield received the ball one more time and quickly moved it to the Worcester 40, but Bourget threw an interception on a third and 1 with
34.4 seconds remaining.

Junior Shawn Lyman led Westfield's offense with 122 rushing yards on 24 carries. Freshman receiver Erik Consilvio had three catches for 37 yards.

Senior linebacker Ken Stewart led Westfield's balanced defensive attack with eight tackles (seven solos) and a spectacular pass interception. Back Luke Russell and lineman John Cloutier also had eight tackles and shared a sack.

Union 37, Rochester 15
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore tailback George Beebe rushed for a single-game record 272 yards and scored three touchdowns as Union College ran past the University of Rochester 37-15 at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Beebe scored on runs of 46 yards and 96 yards in the first quarter as Union jumped out to a 21-0 lead. He added a 14-yard TD run with 2:13 left in the third period, boosting the Union lead to 34-9. Union rolled up 505 yards in total offense, 318 on the ground.

Junior quarterback Ben Gilbert completed 12 of 17 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown -- a 23-yarder to Ryan Gallo. Gilbert also ran for a 6-yard TD with 59 seconds left in the second quarter.

It was Union's sixth straight win since a 13-12 loss to Hobart. The Dutchmen are 8-1 overall, 3-1 in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. Rochester is 5-4 overall, 3-1 in the UCAA.

Union has clinched at least a share of the UCAA football title. If Hobart College defeats RPI next Saturday (at Hobart), Union, Rochester, and Hobart will all tie for the title at 3-1. If RPI upends Hobart, Rochester and Union tie for the title at 3-1. Union would win based on head-to-head result.

Adam Tyksinski recovered a fumble by Rochester's Jeff Piscitelli on the fourth play of the game at the Rochester 41. A false start set the Dutchmen back to the 46. Beebe took the handoff, evaded a tackle in the backfield, and swept left end for a 46-yard TD 63 seconds into the game for a 7-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, Union was pinned at their 1 on a punt by Isaac Standish. Jasper Mills rushed 3 yards. On the next play, Beebe broke through right guard, angled to the middle, and burst 96 yards for a touchdown.

The Union defense held Rochester to 82 yards on the ground. Piscitelli
completed 17 of 31 passes for 303 yards and one TD -- a 32-yarder to Anthony Yandek. He also rushed 11 times for 28 yards, including an 11-yard TD run. Rochester finished with 385 yards in offense.

UW-La Crosse 24, UW-Oshkosh 12
Running back Andrew Mocadlo scored a pair of touchdowns within a three-minute span of the third quarter to help UW-La Crosse defeat UW-Oshkosh 24-12 at Titan Stadium.

UW-La Crosse entered the third quarter leading 10-6 before Mocadlo scored on a 5-yard run with 9:09 left in the period and on a 14-yard run with 6:16 remaining. The touchdowns came on consecutive UW-La Crosse possessions, starting by a forced punt and a fumble recovery, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh (2-7 overall, 2-5 WIAC) scored the game's first points on running back Matt Kaufman's 26-yard touchdown run with 9:36 left in the first quarter. The Titans also scored the game's final points, an 18-yard pass from quarterback Alan Beversdorf to split end Jeremy James with 14:09 remaining in the contest.

Down 6-0, UW-La Crosse took a 10-6 lead into halftime after split end Matt Rizzo caught a four-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Youngbauer (2:25 in the first quarter) and placekicker Jedediah Jensen booted a 44-yard field goal (1:12 in the second quarter).

UW-La Crosse (6-3, 6-1) held UW-Oshkosh to just 103 yards of offense and six first downs through the first three periods, including only 16 yards and one first down in the second quarter. The Titans moved the ball effectively in the final period by gaining 132 yards and 10 first downs.

UW-La Crosse, in posting its 25th win against UW-Oshkosh in 27 meetings, gained 268 yards of offense against the Titans. Mocadlo led the Eagles on the ground with 117 yards in 29 attempts, while Youngbauer compiled 152 in the air by completing 17 of 36 passes. Beversdorf accounted for 218 of the Titans' 235 offensive yards by completing 21 of 36 passes. Split end Shannon King led UW-Oshkosh with eight catches for 144 yards, including seven for 105 in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, linebacker Kurt Schmidt led UW-La Crosse with eight tackles, including three for a loss. Defensive tackle Rick Lewandowski and linebacker Lucas Jachthuber paced UW-Oshkosh with eight tackles each.
