"First of all, they're a good football team," said PSC head coach Chris Rorke. "For whatever reason we got off on the wrong foot. We were on our heels from the get-go. We came out flat and gave up plays, and they were too good for us to do that." Brockport State outgained PSC 424-281 in total offense while not turning the ball over. PSC was forced into four turnovers (3 INT and 1 fumble), and gained only two net yards on the ground. "We moved the ball, but just couldn't get it into the end zone and give ourselves an emotional lift," said Rorke. "Physically, because of their size, we ran out of gas on defense." The Golden Eagles led 8-3 at the end of one quarter,
getting a 41-yard touchdown reception from junior wideout Lionel Rhim
and a two-point The visitors extended their lead to 18-3 by halftime,
as senior Chris Rudderow connected on a 22-yard field goal and
sophomore fullback Billy Reserve Brockport kicker Adrian Herr rounded out the scoring with two minutes remaining with a 37-yard field goal. "It seemed like everything went their way," said Rorke. "When they fumbled, they recovered. When we fumbled, they recovered. But if you're playing well, like they were, the ball bounces your way." Brockport has allowed just 59 points and posted two
shutouts during its Ithaca 31,
Mansfield 0 Giorgio finished with 137 yards on 28 carries (87 of his yards came in the second half), and raised his career total to 1,092 yards -- good for 19th on Ithaca's career list. The Bomber defense held Mansfield to 153 yards of total offense and contributed a touchdown of its own. Senior free safety Ron Amato intercepted two passes -- for the second consecutive week -- and returned the first one 36 yards for a touchdown. An illegal block penalty nullified what would have been a touchdown on his second interception as well. Amato raised his career total to 16 interceptions, breaking the school record he had shared with two others. Senior Seth Steinberg kicked a 20-yard field goal to cap Ithaca's opening drive, then added extra points after each of the Bombers' touchdowns. He extended his school-record to 63 consecutive successful extra-point attempts. Albright, now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth, tied the game just 57 seconds later on a 35 yard touchdown run by junior tailback Keith Johnson and a junior George Merrill kick. The scoring drive was set up by a 52-yard kickoff return by Johnson. Moravian would regain the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first stanza on a one-yard scamper by senior tailback P.J. Jankowicz and a Roesch extra-point. Jankowicz had 30 yards on ten carries to move within 94 yards of 2,000 in his career. Freshman tailback Tim Barlok led the Greyhound rushing attack with 74 yards on six carries. Johnson, who carried the ball 19 times for 130 yards on the afternoon, would tie the game with 35 seconds left in the first quarter on a three-yard scoring run. Junior quarterback Mike Strack completed 17 of 32 passes on the day for the Lions but was intercepted three times. Bowden, who was sacked four times in the game, gave the Greyhounds the lead for good with a one-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining in the first half to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the final 3:21. It was the second straight week that Bowden drove Moravian down the field for a score just before the half. The Greyhounds put the game away with 12:54 remaining in regulation with a 21-yard scoring pass from Bowden to freshman wide receiver Kevin Miltenberger on a fourth and seven-play. For the second straight week, Miltenberger was the top target for the Greyhound quarterbacks, catching six passes for 62 yards. Senior linebacker J.D. Rhinehart led Moravian's defense for the second consecutive week with 10 tackles including one for loss and an interception, which he returned 30 yards with under two minutes remaining in the contest to seal the game. Sophomore safety Jarrod Pence had one forced fumble and one interception to end the first half. It was Pence's third pickoff of the season. Senior cornerback Doug Joseph also had an interception for the Greyhounds. Sophomore defensive tackle Pat Mancini added five tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for Moravian. The Albright defense was led by senior linebacker Matt Fitzgerald, who had 17 tackles, one for loss and one forced fumble. Freshman defensive back Jack Byers had 11 tackles in the game. Montclair
State 14, Delaware Valley 13 (2 OT) The Red Hawks, who went 9-2 and reached the NCAA Division III quarterfinals last year, are 1-0 while the Aggies are winless in two tries. Montclair State had the first possession of the second overtime and needed just two plays to find the end zone. Laquan Majette ended the drive with a 13-yard touchdown while Brent Grablachoff added the extra-point for a 14-7 lead. Delaware Valley responded with a five-play scoring drive, capped by quarterback Duke Greco's one-yard sneak. After a scoreless first half, Montclair State hit the scoreboard first as quarterback Ed Collins scored from one-yard out to complete an 11-play, 46-yard drive. Grablachoff booted the extra-point for a 7-0 lead with 9:18 remaining in the third quarter. It stayed that way until there was 6:17 remaining in the fourth when the Aggie defense took matters into its own hands. Linebacker Brian Christy deflected a Collins pass, defensive end J.P. Kleinle caught it in the air and rumbled 52 yards for his first collegiate touchdown. Jon Hoxworth added the extra-point for a 7-7 score. The Red Hawks drove the ball deep into Delaware Valley territory late in regulation but receiver Jamal Dorsey fumbled the ball at the end of a 35-yard reception and cornerback Carlo D'Angelo recovered at the Aggie 13-yard line. Montclair State also missed an opportunity in the first overtime as, after stopping Delaware Valley with an interception on its possession, Grablachoff banked a 35-yard field goal off the right goalpost. Collins completed 26 of 55 passes for 282 yards but was intercepted four times. Greco was 13-for-41 for 152 and three interceptions in the losing effort. John Carroll 42,

Less then three minutes later, Arth hit Jeff Lerner on a 67-yard touchdown strike top open up a 27-14 advantage. Two plays later, Marietta tailback Kenneth Sasu broke off a 51-yard touchdown run to pull the Pioneers (1-1, 0-1) to within 27-21, but JCU struck back 25 seconds later when Dragoiu took a handoff and raced 64 yards for the touchdown. JCU's 35-21 lead was chiseled down to 35-28, then appeared to vanish on a 66-yard pass play from Marietta quarterback Shawn Taylor to Todd Miller, but an ineligible man downfield penalty wiped out the play. JCU and Marietta each scored a touchdown in the final two minutes, first Larry Holmes on a 2-yard pass from Arth for JCU, then Heath Hinton on a 5-yard pass from Taylor for the Pioneers.

of the NEFC. The Maze's four-yard touchdown run with 6:06 left in the third quarter capped a five-play, 32-yard drive for the Falcons. The TD drive was set up by senior linebacker Jason Smith's outstanding one-handed interception near the sidelines. Westfield scored on its first offensive series of the game on a 21-yard field goal by John Frasco. The score was set up when Chris Bourget completed a 43-yard reception to David Eaton to the Fitchburg 2-yard line on Westfield's first offensive play. It was one of the few bright spots for the Owls as they were held to 123 net yards in total offense. Junior running back Shawn Lyman rushed for 84 yards on 22 carries. The Owls did threaten to score following Maze's touchdown, moving the ball to the Fitchburg 18-yard line midway through the final quarter. But a holding call against Westfield during a pass completion to the 11 stalled the drive. Fitchburg senior quarterback Nino DeCarolis completed 9 of 23 passes, with all but two attempts coming in the first half. The Falcons committed four turnovers, all in the first half. Sophomore kicker Dusty Lehr added the extra point for a 7-0 blue and gold lead. The Dutchmen answered back on their first possession of the second quarter. Noll took Lebanon Valley 62 yards on six plays in 2:27. The drive was capped by a 33-yard scoring toss from Noll to freshman running back Pete Henning for the Dutchmen's first touchdown of the 2000 season. Senior Eric Connelly tied the outing with a successful PAT. Juniata received the kickoff to start the second half, but freshman Paul Evans returned the ball 22 yards before fumbling. Lebanon Valley's Joe Adamo pounced on the loose ball and gave the Dutchmen the ball at the Juniata 39. Two plays later, Trezza cut to the left side of the Juniata defense and rumbled 22 yards for a score. The point after was missed by Connelly. Lebanon Valley's defense did not weaken after the visitors took a 13-7 lead. Juniata's remaining five possessions in the second half resulted in two long drives that ended on fourth-down stands by the Dutchmen, two three-and-out series and an interception by Barry Rhodes on its final possession. The Dutchmen added a final touchdown with 14:56 to go in the fourth quarter when Noll hit senior wide receiver Doug Henning, the older brother of Pete Henning, with a one-yard scoring dart. The drive was an impressive 13-play, 76-yard effort that took 5:40 off the clock. A two-point pass attempt failed. Sophomore defensive back Jack Himmelberger led the Lebanon Valley defensive effort with 10 tackles, while senior Shawn Berwager and senior linebacker Todd Lipp had nine stops. State 48, Kean 0 Babst turned both of his receptions into first quarter scores -- a 32-yarder for the Red Dragons' first points with 7:57 left and a 47-yarder with 3:01 remaining. As the holder on a field goal try late in the first half, Babst took a low snap, started running right, ducked under a tackle and reversed direction before diving just inside the left end zone pylon for an 11-yard touchdown run. Cortland scored on six straight possessions in the first half to take a 41-0 lead at intermission. 39, Alma 14 Unlike the wins against Urbana and Heidelberg, Wittenberg got off to a relatively slow start. Senior placekicker Ryan Walker opened the scoring with a career-long 43-yard field goal in the first quarter, but Alma responded early in the second with a touchdown pass from Brandon Wrobel to Jeremy Haynie that covered 12 yards and put Wittenberg behind for the first time this year. From that point it was all Wittenberg. The Tigers responded with three drives that culminated with touchdown runs by senior tailback Casey Donaldson. His second-quarter scoring scampers of 1, 4 and 1 yard extended the Wittenberg advantage to 23-7 by halftime, and they moved him to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference record books. Donaldson now has 54 career rushing touchdowns, tying the conference mark held by Stanley Drayton, who played for Allegheny College from 1989-92. Donaldson finished the game with team-highs of 34 carries for 138 yards, his third straight 100-yard rushing game. He now has 4,090 in his career, extending his school record and moving him into second place on the NCAC career list. In the second half, the Tigers did their scoring through the air. Junior wide receiver Michael Aljancic, who caught seven passes for a season-best 123 yards, hauled in the first scoring strike, a 21-yard reception from senior quarterback Anthony Crane with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Junior wide receiver Steve DeGraffinreed completed the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter from senior quarterback Chris Damico. Sandwiched in between was Walker's second field goal of the day, a 32-yarder with 11:30 left in the fourth quarter. With that kick, Walker broke the school record of 187 points by kicking previously held by Greg Brame (1990-93). Alma got the last score of the night, a six-yard TD run by Dan McGregor with 38 seconds left in the game. Defensively, the Tigers held Alma to 175 net yards (to 394 for Wittenberg) and recorded 15 tackles for loss in the game. Wooster 27,
Grove City 7 Wooster (2-0) accomplished both, defeating the Wolverines 27-7 and limiting Bowers to 139 yards rushing on 34 carries - leaving him 16 yards short of the record. Early on, it looked like Bowers and Grove City might spring the upset. The Wolverines (1-2) took advantage of a short kickoff to start the game and proceeded to march 51 yards on eight plays, capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by Bowers. In the drive, Bowers carried the ball six times for 44 yards. Grove City maintained its 7-0 lead until early in the second quarter, when sophomore Scott Jones capped a 50-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run - the first of his career. With 2:53 to play in the first half, the Wolverines moved the ball into Wooster territory, but a fumble by Jack Gillespie on a first-down carry was covered up by Scot junior strong safety Scott McManamon at the 45-yard line. Wooster then moved the ball to the Grove City 26-yard line, where on a third-and-four play, senior quarterback Justin Abraham scrambled down the right sideline for a touchdown. In the third quarter, a 44-yard punt by sophomore Ryan Hartschuh pinned Grove City at their own three-yard line. The Wolverines were unable to get a first down, and a short punt by Ben Shreve gave the Scots the ball back at the Grove City 37-yard line. Seven plays later, sophomore tailback Rob Hooper scored from 1 yard out to push the lead to 21-7. Field goals of 21 and 32 yards in the final four minutes of the contest by senior Joe Zombek capped the scoring for the Scots. Statistically, Wooster more than doubled the offensive output of Grove City (358-153), and the Scots forced four turnovers - three fumbles and an interception. Individually, Jones gained 105 yards on 24 carries, marking his first career 100-yard rushing game. Hooper added 54 yards on 11 carries, while Abraham finished with 47 yards on eight carries. After tossing four touchdown passes in a 32-16 win against Kalamazoo last week, Abraham did not find the end zone on Saturday, but still completed 18 of 31 passes for 140 yards. Defensively, senior Seth Duerr led the way with 14 tackles, including one sack, and a fumble recovery. In addition, senior Seth Mastrine had his 12th career interception to move into a tie for third place on Wooster's all-time list. |
