Week Seven Game Summaries

Allegheny 50, Kenyon 0
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny (4-3, 3-1 NCAC) posted its first shutout of the season with a 50-0 win against Kenyon (1-5, 0-4 NCAC) at Robertson Field. The Gators rushed for 371 yards, as junior tailback Shane Ream and senior halfback Jeremy Snyder each went over 100 yards in the game.

Ream led all rushers with 182 yards, his fifth game over 150 yards this year, while Snyder gained 100 yards on 12 carries. The same duo was the last pair of Allegheny backs to go over the century mark in the same game, accomplishing the feat on Oct. 23, 1999, at Earlham when Ream tallied 156 and Snyder 134. Ream also notched four rushing touchdowns today, the third game this season Ream found the end zone four times.

The Gator defense provided the offense with outstanding field position on the first two drives by intercepting Kenyon quarterback Tony Miga two times, but Allegheny could not capitalize; punting on the first drive and fumbling on the 1-yard line in the second. But the Gators workhorse out of the backfield, Ream then sparked the Gators to a 14-0 lead, scoring on a pair of 1-yard runs on Allegheny's third and fourth possessions of the game.

The Gators found the end zone on the third consecutive drive when sophomore quarterback Joe Cowart hooked up with junior tight end Jared McNeilly on a 27-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter. It was McNeilly's first touchdown reception of the year, and Cowart's eighth touchdown pass.

Ream then scored from 32 yards out, followed by freshman quarterback Michael Smith's second touchdown run to cap a 28 point second quarter for a 36-0 halftime lead. Ream's fourth score of the day came on a 19-yard run midway through the third quarter, and junior tailback Wyatt Jones capped the scoring on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Cowart finished the day 10-for-17 passing for 122 yards, while Smith was 7-for-12 for 99 yards. Freshman wide receiver Jon Turner, making his third consecutive start, made a season-high five catches for 49 yards. The Gator defense, which posted its first shutout since a 42-0 win over Kenyon last season, was led by a pair of sacks by senior defensive end Joe Rossi and by interceptions from junior linebacker Ralph Tune and twin brothers Tim and Jim Lorber, a linebacker and free safety, respectively.

Wesley 68, Newport News 0
DOVER, Del. -- Wesley made the most of its first home appearance of the 2000 campaign, posting a shutout and scoring 68 points. Junior quarterback Jason Visconti completed 11 of 15 passes for 233 yards and six touchdowns.

Of the 10 offensive touchdowns, only wideout Joe Able had two. Able caught touchdown strikes of 30 and 70 yards to pace the receiver corps.

The Wolverines posted huge numbers in many offensive categories. The Wolverines accumulated 572 total yards of offense with 339 coming on the ground and 233 through the air. In all, Visconti hit five different targets for TD passes: Able (30, 70), Robert Carrothers (21), Ryan Chiodi (13), James Lowe (20), and Shawn Plews (4). Four different running backs made their way into the scorebook: Forrley Gunby (12), Jabarr Truitt (14), Fred Edwards (24), and C.C. Trott (43).

Defensively, Wesley limited the Builders' offense to only five first downs 0-9 passing and 67 total yards. Jeremy Jordan led the team with eight tackles followed closely by Mike Horsey with seven.

The Wolverines (4-1) were originally supposed to have their home opener Sept. 16, but Mount Ida cancelled that game in midweek because of a lack of healthy players.

Hamline 17, Carleton 14
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Cory Kahl's 26-yard field goal with 9:20 remaining proved to be the difference as Hamline turned three Carleton turnovers into 14 points and blocked a potential game-tying field goal with under three minutes remaining to defeat the Knights 17-14 at Norton Stadium this afternoon.

It was a defensive struggle on both sides of the ball. The Hamline defense held Carleton to only 234 yards of total offense, but the Knight defense returned the favor by limiting the hosts to 283 yards of total offense.

The game was a rather conservative and evenly-played affair until the final ten minutes. Looking to jump-start the offense, Carleton attempted a fake punt from the Hamline 38-yard line. Back-up quarterback Nate Flaherty completed an 8-yard pass, but came up 7 yards shy of the first down. Hamline proceeded to drive 53 yards in 13 plays, culminating in Kahl's field goal. More importantly, the drive ate up 5:33.

It appeared Carleton would replicate the Pipers' drive, as the Knights went 46 yards in 11 plays. Junior Jon Groteboer's pass on third and six from the 15 was deflected, forcing a field goal attempt. For the second straight week, junior Brian Wambach had an attempt blocked, as Luke Tressel blocked the 32-yarder.

Miraculously, Carleton was given another chance. The defense forced the Pipers to punt from deep within their own territory. A 11-yard punt by Kahl gave the Knights the ball at Hamline's 19-yard line. Groteboer, who was chased and hit hard all day by the Hamline defense, suffered his fourth sack of the game on third and five from the 14-yard line. His fourth down pass was complete to sophomore Erik Fisher, but was a yard shy of the first down.

Carleton opened the scoring when junior tight end Steve Nuessle hauled in a 23-yard pass from Groteboer on Carleton's first offensive possession of the contest. Hamline got on the board when they recovered a Carleton fumble by Dan Reider following a vicious hit at the end of the first quarter. They drove 89 yards in 12 plays, as Doug Amsden hauled in a 17-yard pass from Tim Couchman to knot the game at 7-7.

Carleton would return the favor early in the third quarter when senior Josh Schroeder returned an interception 32 yards to the Hamline 8-yard line. Senior Kyle Swartout scored on the next play, and Carleton led 14-7. Again a turnover turned the momentum in favor of Hamline, as Groteboer was picked off by Hamline's Mark Nelson, who returned it to the Carleton nine-yard line. Brandon Swenson scored three plays later from two yards out, and the game was tied at 14-14, setting up the final ten minutes of play.

Groteboer, under pressure all day long, was 16 of 32 for 149 yards and one touchdown and one interception. The Carleton rushing attack, which had resurfaced the past two weeks, was held to only 78 yards on 35 carries.

Junior Scott O'Reilly led the Carleton defensive effort with 13 tackles, nine solo and two for losses, with two sacks. Senior J.J. Franz posted nine tackles and a forced fumble and recovery. Senior Jeff Thurk added seven tackles, six solo, with two sacks. Schroeder added six tackles, five solo, to go with his interception.

Mary Hardin-Baylor 24, Mississippi College 6
CLINTON, Miss. -- Mary Hardin-Baylor's stifling defense and potent rushing attack ruined homecoming for Mississippi College as the Crusaders defeated the Choctaws 24-6 before a season-high crowd of 6,139 at Robinson-Hale Stadium.

Mary Hardin-Baylor improved to a perfect 6-0 overall and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play. MC fell to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the ASC.

The Crusaders, who entered the contest as the nation's fourth-best rushing team, ran for 276 yards, led by Isaac Shaw's 102 yards on just three carries. Shaw broke off a 56-yard touchdown jaunt with 13:07 to play in the second quarter, giving UMHB a 17-0 lead. Kevin Mitchell added 85 yards on 19 carries .

MC quarterback Payton Perrett connected with Clint Harrison on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 4:40 to go before halftime, but could get no closer. Perrett's scoring strike was the 31st in his career, which broke the old school record of 30 previously held by Wally Henry (1985-89). Perrett accomplished the feat in just 14 career games.

The Crusader defense blitzed Perrett all night long, sacking him four times, but knocking him to the turf repeatedly. Perrett, who was averaging 262 yards passing a game, was held to 153 yards, completing 10 of 28 passes.

Crusader quarterback Cody Fredenburg threw for a season-high 177 yards and two scores, including a 51-yard TD pass to Erik Simmons to seal the win with five minutes to go in the third quarter. Fredenburg's other score came with 2:34 left in the first period, when he hit a wide open Jared Johnson over the middle from 13 yards out. Kevin Wilburn opened the scoring for UMHB, hitting a 23-yard field goal with 10:48 to play in the first.

With the win, the Crusaders now lead the series with MC 2-1, and have won the last two against the Choctaws.

DePauw 48, Blackburn 7
CARLINVILLE, Ill. -- After five consecutive games decided by six or fewer points, the Tigers left little doubt in Saturday's non-conference game at Blackburn College as they defeated the host Beavers 48-7 to improve to 2-4. The win was the Tigers' second in a row. Blackburn fell to 1-6 on the season.

The Tigers' balanced offense finished with 522 yards with 256 coming on the ground. DePauw entered the game with just 283 rushing yards on the season over the first five games. Meanwhile, the defense limited the Beavers to only 95 yards and just 26 on the ground while picking up its second score in as many weeks.

After being forced to punt on their first series, the Tigers scored on each of their next four possessions to take a 24-0 lead. Dan Ryan, the leading scorer in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, caught a 13-yard score from Jason Lee with just over six minutes left in the first and Ben Murray's first of six successful extra-point conversions gave DePauw a 7-0 lead.

Lee tossed the second of four touchdown passes as he teamed with Joe Schoen from 20 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to make it 14-0 and A.J. Smart made it 21-0 with a 19-yard scamper with 11:02 left in the half. The touchdown run was the Tigers' first on the ground since last year's game at Rose-Hulman (Nov. 6, 1999). Murray booted a 29-yard field goal with 7:57 left to make it 24-0.

Blackburn scored its only points of the game when DePauw backup quarterback Scott Shelbourne fumbled at the Blackburn 31 and Aaron Fields scooped it up and took it 69 yards for the score.

The Tigers matched their 17-point second quarter with 17 more in the third as Lee tossed scoring passes to Ryan McGuffey (44 yards) and Ryan (59 yards). Murray added a 32-yard field goal with 2:52 left in the third to make it 41-7.

The final score of the game came from the defense as Matt Stahley recovered a Blackburn fumble and ran it in 12 yards for a touchdown with only 2:43 remaining in the game. The Tigers' second fumble recovery for a score in as many weeks made the final 48-7.

In addition to Smart's 100-yard effort, which was a career best, Matt King and Josh Angel also set career marks with 91 and 84 yards, respectively. Lee and Shelbourne combined to throw for 266 yards without being intercepted and completed passes to seven different receivers. Schoen caught six for 91 yards and a touchdown and Ryan hauled in three for 85 with two going for scores.

The Tigers limited the Beavers to just six first downs and only 2.1 yards per offensive play. Additionally, they recorded five sacks led by J.T. Benton with two and Alson Jacquet, Charles Stanback and Jeremy Legge with one each.

Lake Forest 41, Lawrence 6
APPLETON, Wis. -- Lake Forest jumped out to a 38-0 lead after three quarters and coasted to a 41-6 win against Lawrence at the Banta Bowl.

Lake Forest (3-3, 3-2) evened their overall record and jumped above the .500 mark in the Midwest Conference. The Foresters have rebounded from all three of their losses with decisive wins. In fact, Lake Forest has outscored their opponents 105-40 after losses.

Lawrence (0-6, 0-5) remained winless on the season.

The Foresters used 388 yards of rushing and 464 total yards of offense to overpower the Vikings on Saturday. Lake Forest had two players go over the 100 yards rushing mark. Jason Arendsee ran for a game-high 129 yards on just 13 carries (9.9 yards/carry). He scored three touchdowns (two rushing and one receiving). Freshman Tom Starnicky rushed 23 times for 123 yards and a touchdown. Five others rushed for at least 20 yards on the day.

Lake Forest's defense was equally as impressive, holding the Viking scoreless through the first 47 minutes of the game. Lawrence punted nine times, threw two interceptions, and only had the ball for just over 20 minutes.

Arendsee scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, from 32 and 11 yards, to give Lake Forest an early cushion.

Starnicky found the endzone at the 10:02 mark in the second quarter, before Arendsee scored again with 1:25 left in the half. Arendsee's third score came from a Brad Cozzie pass and gave the Foresters a 28-0 halftime lead.

Lake Forest scored twice within a two minute span in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 38-0. Pat Dunne connected on a 25-yard field in 2:19 remaining in the third and Andy Heikes scored on a one-yard TD run two minutes later.

R.J. Rosenthal found J. Hacquebord for a 26-yard touchdown pass-and-catch with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game to put LU on the board. Rosenthal finished 14-for-29 passing for 196 yards with the one touchdown and one interception.

Dunne scored the game's final points when he nailed his second field of the afternoon -- a 42-yarder with just under five minutes to play.

Dunne also made all five of his extra point attempts to finish with 11 points for the day. Additionally, he punted twice for an average of 42.0 yards with zero LU return yards.

For Lawrence, Zach Michael had six catches for 116 yards. Defensively, Ryan Zutter led the way with 14 tackles (seven solo, seven assists).

Casey Urlacher led the Foresters with seven tackles.

St. Norbert 45, Monmouth 0
MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The day belonged to Matt O'Grady and the St. Norbert defense in the Green Knights' 45-0 win against Monmouth at Woll Memorial Field. The senior running back ran for a school-record 282 yards on 27 carries and the defense pitched its third shutout in four games as the Green Knights, ranked No. 24 in the NCAA Division III poll, remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Midwest Conference.

St. Norbert totaled 582 yards of total offense in the win, with 396 coming on the ground. The Green Knights' defense held Monmouth to just 160 yards, and the Scots ran only one play from scrimmage in St. Norbert territory -- at the SNC 44, on a fourth-quarter possession. It is the first time St. Norbert has three shutouts in a season since the Green Knights tallied four in 1952.

O'Grady record-setting day came on 27 carries, an average of 10.4 yards per carry. His total of 282 yards broke the previous standard of 268 set by Norm Jarock in 1957. O'Grady, who had 173 yards on 12 carries in the first half, had eight carries go for 10 yards or more.

St. Norbert got on the board late in the first quarter on Jason Augustynowicz's 27-yard touchdown run. Three plays later, Eddie Obermueller picked off a Rob Purlee pass and brought it in for a 27-yard score. Chris Griffin's 25-yard field goal put St. Norbert up 17-0 at the break.

The Green Knights added two scores in each of the last two quarters. The third quarter scoring plays came on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Luke ott to Dan Luckow and an O'Grady 5-yard run. Mario Fiorito added a 7-yard touchdown run and Brandon Rubens found Dustin Beauchamp on a 20-yard strike for the fourth period scores.

St. Norbert's average starting field position was its own 44, while Monmouth had an average starting spot of its own 19-yard line.

UW-Platteville 28, UW-Oshkosh 24
OSHKOSH, Wis. -- UW-Platteville benefited from six turnovers and two missed field goal attempts by UW-Oshkosh on Saturday to defeat the host Titans, 28-24.  Both teams have identical records following their WIAC matchup, 2-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

UW-Platteville, which entered the contest having scored only two touchdowns in its last four games played, rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficit to take a 28-10 lead with 5:59 remaining in the contest.  UW-Oshkosh stormed back in the closing minutes as split end Shannon King returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and split end Mike Vielehr caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alan Beversdorf.

UW-Oshkosh took a 10-7 advantage on a 39-yard field goal by David Gaulke and a 10-yard touchdown return of a blocked punt by Ryan Lemke.  It was the Titans' third blocked punt in the last two games.

UW-Platteville, which snapped a four-game losing streak with the win, took contol in the second half by scoring on 23 and 58-yard touchdown passes from quarterback Tom Stetzer to split end Troy Gagner and a 10-yard touchdown scamper by running back Michael Hudson.

UW-Platteville totaled 488 yards of offense, with 399 coming via the arms of Stetzer (281) and quarterback Aaron Mack (118).  Gagner caught eight passes for 162 yards and the two third quarter scores.  UW-Oshkosh had 373 yards in offense in the loss, with Beversdorf tossing for 259 yards.

Principia 22, Rockford 20
ELSAH, Ill. -- Rockford broke a record for most points, most total yards and most yards rushing and halfback Marcus Howard rushed for nearly 350 yards and tallied 363 all-purpose yards at Clark Stadium, but it wasn't quite enough as Principia College outlasted the Regents, 22-20.

Howard entered the contest with 174 yards, finished the afternoon with 343 yards and three touchdowns on 43 carries as the Regents built a 14-0 halftime advantage. The previous single-game rushing mark was set back in the second week of the season when Terrence Pirtle ran for 238. He also caught three passes for 20 yards.

"What an outstanding individual effort," Rockford head football coach Vic Clark said. "Marcus ran hard and really did an excellent job finding daylight."

The Regents amassed 415 yards on the ground and 485 total yards -- both records by the squad.

But the Panthers stormed back with 22 points in the first 10:39 of the third quarter to take a 22-14 lead.

Rockford College made a valiant effort to tie the score by driving 62 yards in 10 plays to pull to within 22-20 with 6:34 remaining. But the try for two failed when Regent quarterback Bob Peterson was sacked.

"The kids worked so hard today, it's really a tough loss," Clark said. "It breaks my heart that Marcus ran for so many yards and the offensive line did a fantastic job opening up the holes and we still didn't win."

The Regents came out firing in the first half, more than doubling the total offense of Principia College. After moving the ball twice, the Regents put together a 13-play, 74-yard scoring drive that consumed 6:33 of the first and second quarters. Howard gained 60 yards on the drive and hit pay dirt when he crashed in from the 5. Andy Wind's PAT with 11:20 left in the half gave the Regents a 7-0 lead.

Later in the half, Rockford's Paul Kelly broke through to block a Panther punt and Kendrick Thomas pounced on the ball at the Principia 43.

The Regents wasted no time driving in for the score. Terrence Pirtle sprinted 38 yards on the second play and Howard finished the drive by bulling his way in from the 4. Wind's extra point gave the Regents a 14-0 advantage.

Principia (4-3), which finished the game with 210 yards passing and 260 total yards, opened up its passing game in the third quarter to take the lead as Chris Girbes-Pierce threw touchdown passes of 12, 30 and 38 yards.

Rockford College quarterback Bob Peterson completed 11 of 20 passes for 70 yards. Julian Austin caught three for 26, Will Jordan snared three for 18 and Travis Rhodes hauled in one for 39.

Hanover 24, Bluffton 15
HANOVER, Ind. -- Bluffton suffered its first Heartland Conference defeat as Hanover topped the Beavers 24-15. BC is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the HCAC, while Hanover improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC.

Bluffton led in nearly every statistical category, but Hanover kept the Beavers out of the end zone at several crucial times to preserve the win. Bluffton outgained Hanover 375-315 in total yards and BC held possession of the football for 34:23 compared to just 25:37 for Hanover. Bluffton also picked off three Hanover passes and committed just one turnover themselves. The Panthers rushed for just 51 total yards, while Bluffton churned out 273 on the ground.

Running back Tyson Goings rushed for a season-high 219 yards on 39 carries that included a 32-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Hanover scored two first-quarter touchdowns and then another shortly into the second quarter to build a 21-7 lead. Senior Brandon Cupples nailed a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to bring the halftime score to 21-10 in favor of Hanover.

Couples would add a 39-yard field goal in the third quarter and Hanover gave Bluffton a safety with one minute remaining in the game, but that would be all the points Bluffton would get. The BC defense gave up just a 32-yard field goal in the second half to keep the Beavers in the game.

Sophomore Brad Moore completed 10 of 20 passes for 102 yards without an interception, while Hanover quarterback Eric Bruns completed 28 of 40 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns.

Pat Craun, Josh Slaughter and Brian Steiner all recorded interceptions of Bruns' passes and Greg Ditz recorded 11 tackles to lead the defense. Shawn Goetz, Greg Bruns and Jeff Company all recorded six tackles.

Hiram 9, Oberlin 8
Oberlin scored on its opening drive but couldn't do anything else as Hiram rallied for a 9-8 win, sending the Yeomen to their 35th consecutive loss.

Oberlin (0-6, 0-3 NCAC) struck first on a 1-yard pass from quarterback Chris Moffatt to Brian Senne. Nathan Francis caught the two-point conversion attempt and the Yeomen had an 8-0 lead with 10:06 left in the first quarter.

Following the Oberlin touchdown, Hiram's defense limited the Yeomen to 83 yards of total offense the rest of the game. But the Terriers (2-3, 2-2) threw five interceptions and committing numerous penalties which stopped drives.

Junior placekicker Joe Rogich got Hiram its first points by connecting on a 20-yard field goal attempt with 13:21 remaining in the first half. From that point on, neither offense could muster much of a scoring threat.

Hiram got its game-winning touchdown when linebacker Jason Timmons stepped in front of a Moffatt pass and raced 33 yards for a touchdown with 8:23 left in the third quarter. The Terriers' two-point conversion failed and Hiram made the 9-8 score stand up.

Oberlin's last gasp came after Oberlin linebacker Sam Hobi blocked a Terrier punt, setting up the Yeomen at Hiram's 42-yard line with 40 seconds left, but Oberlin could not complete a pass.

"I forget how it feels anymore," Yeomen linebacker Ryan Catignani told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Catignani is one of three seniors on a club that hasn't won since the 1997 season opener. "Being close or getting blown out, it doesn't matter. I want to remember how it feels to win. I have to feel a little selfish here and get a win for myself."

Moffatt was just 16-for-49 passing for 115 yards, while the Oberlin run game
could only muster 2 yards on 21 carries. Hiram quarterback Tom Gallagher was 16-for-38 for 169 yards.

Defensively for Hiram, junior linebacker Matt Stiner intercepted two passes, knocked down two others, and registered a tackle for a loss.

Bridgewater 64, Guilford 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Visiting Bridgewater scored a school-record 64 points and handed Guilford its worst loss since 1935 in Saturday's 64-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference football win.  The Eagles (5-1, 2-1 ODAC) took advantage of six Guilford turnovers and scored on seven of their first nine possessions.  The 64 points mark the third-highest total in ODAC history and the most scored against Guilford (1-5, 1-3 ODAC) since 1987.

Junior quarterback Jason Lutz ran for three touchdowns and completed seven of 10 passes for 125 yards in less than three quarters.  His replacement, sophomore Robbie Jenkins, threw for a touchdown pass and caught another from senior Vince Turner on a halfback pass.

Bridgewater's defense forced four first-half turnovers, which led to 28 points and helped the guests to a 38-0 halftime lead.  The Eagles recovered two Guilford fumbles on the Quakers' 1-yard line in the first quarter, which resulted in two quick scores.  Junior defensive lineman Jeremy Fox forced a David Hessler fumble on the Quakers' second possession, which senior Luis DeJesus recovered on the Guilford 1. Lutz scored on the next play to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, sophomore defensive lineman Ryan Bailey returned a Hessler fumble 34 yards to the Guilford 1, which led to junior tailback Davon Cruz's  1-yard plunge.

Lutz started the second-quarter scoring and capped a 10-play, 82-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run.  Sophomore cornerback Papi Rodriguez set up the scoring drive by intercepting Hessler on the Eagles' 2-yard line and returning it 16 yards.  Hessler's third fumble of the day on his own 12-yard line led to Turner's halfback touchdown pass to Jenkins and the commanding halftime lead.

The Eagles received the second-half kickoff and marched 65 yards in six plays behind Lutz' passing and running.  He kept the drive alive with a 32-yard pass to sophomore tight end Van Williams on third down.  Lutz also completed an 11-yard pass to senior receiver Marcus Richardson before capping the drive with a 14-yard option keeper.

Bridgewater's reserves played effectively in the second half as the Eagles added 19 fourth-quarter points and preserved the team's first shutout since a 24-0 whitewash of Hampden-Sydney on Oct. 4, 1997. Sophomore quarterback Brad McCready threw his first career touchdown pass and directed a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive midway through the period. Rookie linebacker Ryan Nelson finished off the scoring with 31 seconds left when he picked up a Roger Lorince fumble and returned it 40 yards for a score.

The Eagles outgained Guilford 462-114, with a balanced offensive attack.  Rookie running back Michael Kelley led 10 Bridgewater ball-carriers with 52 yards on six carries.  The Eagles rolled up 237 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.  Richardson caught six of the Eagles' 12 completions for 129 yards.

Senior running back Marques Williams led Guilford's rushers with a season-high 44 yards on 12 carries.  Hessler and Lorince combined for just four of 19 passing for 45 yards and an interception.  Junior linebacker Will Black made a career-high 13 tackles.

Hartwick 57, Alfred 19
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Hartwick (5-1) amassed 490 yards of total offense and cruised to a 57-19 victory against Alfred (2-4) on Saturday afternoon at All-Weather Field.

Junior quarterback Daniel Pincelli led the Hawks' offensive attack as he passed for 420 yards and six touchdowns in the game. Pincelli was 23-for-40
passing with no interceptions. He completed passes to seven different players and three of them finished the game with more than 100 receiving yards. Senior tight end Greg Balcavage caught 10 passes for 121 yards, Ryan Johnson had four receptions for 104 yards and running back Mike Onorata caught three passes for 131 yards.

The Hawks led Alfred 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Hartwick offense then erupted in the second quarter by putting 30 unanswered points on the board, sending the Hawks into halftime with a 37-6 lead.

Onorata started the scoring in the second quarter when he caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Pincelli. Johnson followed with a 29-yard touchdown reception and Onorata scored on a 3-yard run giving the Hawks a 25-6 lead with 9:01 remaining in the first half. Johnson then scored his second touchdown on a 29-yard reception from Pincelli and cornerback Kory Schramm followed with a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown, making the score 37-6 at the half.

Alfred started the scoring in the second half when quarterback Todd Zandrowicz scored on a 3-yard run up the middle, reducing the Hartwick lead to 37-12, with 4:36 remaining in the third quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, Onorata scored on a 66-yard touchdown reception from Pincelli with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter. Alfred answered one minute later when Zandrowicz passed the ball to Nick Freeman for a 69-yard touchdown reception.

The Hawks added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring. Senior wide receiver Luke Urtz caught a 6-yard pass from Pincelli, while junior wide receiver/defensive back Johnny Nowak had a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Brian Matthews led the Hartwick defense with 10 tackles (5 solo) in the game. Schramm and Nowak recorded two interceptions each while Greg Brewer had one interception. Tom Knapp, Luke Nebush and Josh Gregory had one sack each.

Mount Union 42, Wilmington 7
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The battle for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference turned into a lopsided affair as the No. 1 Mount Union Purple Raiders ran away with a 42-7 victory against the Wilmington Quakers.

Both teams headed into game with perfect 4-0 conference records, but it was the Raiders who left with a 6-0 overall record and a 60-game regular season win streak intact. The Quakers now have to settle for second place in the conference standings with a 4-1 record and a 4-2 overall record.

Wilmington was able to move the ball on the Raiders' defense, but the Green and White just couldn't find the end zone. On their first three possessions, the Quakers drove deep into Mount Union territory, but could only come up with seven points on a one-yard touchdown run from quarterback Adam Ryan.

Meanwhile, the Raiders faltered on their first drive, but scored touchdowns on each of their next three possessions. Quarterback Gary Smeck connected with receiver Adam Irgang on scoring strikes of 31 and 15 yards. In between those two scores, running back Chuck Moore broke off a 27-yard touchdown run.

Moore took it to the Quakers all day long. The 6-0, 200-pound junior finished off the game with 152 rushing yards on 22 carries. As a team, the Raiders ran the ball 50 times racked up 253 yards on the ground, compared to Wilmington's 27 yards on 22 carries. Sophomore Demetrius Al-Lateef was WC's top rusher with 25 yards on eight carries.

Trailing 21-7, the Quakers had a chance to pull closer on their final drive of the half. However, the drive stalled at the Mount Union six-yard line when Ryan was picked off by Jeff Knoblauch.

The second half turned ugly when the Quakers turned the ball over twice and punted once in their first three possessions of the third quarter. Mount Union took full advantage of the Quakers' struggles and put the ball in the end zone two more times during the third quarter. Moore scored his second TD of the day on a 10-yard run and Dan Pugh made the score 35-7 when he gathered in a 15-yard scoring pass from Smeck.

Pugh, who rushed for 65 yards on 17 carries, tacked on the Raiders' final touchdown on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Smeck completed 17 of his 26 pass attempts for 313 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His counterpart, Ryan, was 20-of-41 for 274 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Both squads had excellent showings from their top receivers. Mount Union's Adam Marino hauled in nine passes for 154 yards, while Wilmington's Jonathan Cain caught seven passes for 118 yards.

Overall, the Raiders put up 566 yards of offense, while Wilmington totaled up 296 yards.

In addition to their three turnovers, the Quakers also ran into big problems on third-down plays. For the game, WC was able to convert on just four of its 13 (30%) third-down plays.
