Johns Hopkins Wins Second Straight, Rolls Past Moravian, 41-3

BETHLEHEM, PA – Visiting Johns Hopkins scored 21 points in a span of just over four minutes midway through the first half and the Blue Jays never looked back in posting a 41-3 victory at Moravian in Centennial Conference action at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon.  Johns Hopkins, which improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial, jumped out to a 34-3 halftime lead and picked up its second straight win against the Greyhounds, who slip to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial.

The Blue Jays, who entered the game having been held scoreless in the first quarter in their first two games of the season, wasted little time jumping on the Greyhounds as they sprinted to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on the strength of a pair of one-yard touchdown runs by junior Nick Fazio.  The first scoring run capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive, while the second was set up by a fumble recovery by the Blue Jay defense and came just over two minutes after his initial score.
Moravian, which turned the ball over one play after Fazio's first score, fumbled the ball away one play after his second as well and the Blue Jays needed just four plays to move 32 yards to push their lead to 21-0.  Hewitt Tomlin hit junior Sam Wernick with a five-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive, which lasted just 1:41.

The Greyhounds efficiently moved 56 yards in nine plays and got a career-long 41-yard field goal from Ian Heck on their ensuing drive, but that would be the final score of the day for Moravian.

A nine-yard touchdown pass from Tomlin to sophomore Scott Cremens on JHU's next possession made it 28-3 and Scott Barletta capped a quick, five-play, 65-yard drive that took just 1:49 with a one-yard scoring run with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter.   The drive was highlighted by a career-long 53-yard run by Tomlin, who orchestrated a perfect fake and sprinted down the middle of the field before being caught at the Moravian 12.  Barletta's touchdown came four plays later.

The 34-3 lead held until midway through the fourth quarter when junior A.J. Safi added a one-yard touchdown run of his own.  Safi's scoring run came six plays after Moravian's sixth turnover of the game and finished a drive that covered 19 yards.  The Blue Jay defense forced three fumbles and came up with three interceptions on the day while holding the 'Hounds to just 185 yards of total offense, including just 62 in the second half.

Tomlin was 18-fo-33 for 219 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  He also rushed four times for a game-high 65 yards.  Wernick had seven receptions for 65 yards and the one score, while Cremens added six catches for 82 yards and the one score.
The victory comes at the end of a season-opening three-game road swing for the Blue Jays, who were also playing their seventh straight road game dating back to last season.  JHU is now 16-5 in its last 21 road games.

Freshman Phil Gardner was 7-of-17 for 106 yards with two interceptions, while Joe Tegan added 60 yards rushing to lead the Greyhounds.  Moravian was just 1-of-10 on third down conversions and was outgained 417-185 on the day.
