More news about: Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. (10/1/10) – Sophomore running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) rushed 20 times for a career-high 223 yards and a touchdown in Washington and Lee University's 55-29 football win at Guilford College Saturday. The visiting Generals (2-2) forced five Guilford (0-4) turnovers in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.

Washington and Lee head coach Frank Miriello set the school's football coaching victories record with Saturday's win. He broke the mark held by former Generals' mentor Gary Fallon and now has a 77-75-1 record in 16-plus seasons on the Washington and Lee sidelines.

Washington and Lee's speed option attack rolled up 463 rushing yards and six touchdowns in the game. Heinsohn, who cleared the 100-rushing yard mark for the third straight outing, had 129 yards on 11 carries by halftime. His 47-yard touchdown run capped the Generals' 21-point third quarter and his 223 rushing yards mark the most by an ODAC student this season.

Washington and Lee junior running back Harrison Hudson (Salem, Va./Salem) gained 65 yards and a touchdown on five carries. He also caught a 29-yard scoring pass from junior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) late the in the second quarter that gave the Generals a 20-15 halftime advantage. Sophomore teammate Brett Murray (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) added 65 rushing yards and two second-half touchdowns on nine carries. Westfal ran for a third-quarter score and passed for two more.

While the Generals yielded 467 total offensive yards, their defense had three interceptions and recovered two Quakers' fumbles. Three of the takeaways led to touchdowns. Sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) made a team-high eight tackles, recovered a fumble and had a second-quarter interception. Junior linebacker Taylor Malone (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga) had seven stops, two behind the line of scrimmage.

Guilford redshirt-sophomore quarterback Luke Vandall (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) completed 23-of-29 passes for 299 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, but was also picked off twice.  Redshirt-sophomore Ben King (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) made 10 catches for 141 yards and two scores. Sophomore running back Mike Williams (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) paced the Quakers' rushers with eight carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. Junior linebacker Chris Jessup (Eastover, N.C./Cape Fear) made a game-high 14 tackles, including a sack.

Guilford returns to action next Saturday (10/9) at NAIA-member Southern Virginia University. The game will be played at Parry McCluer High School in Lexington, Va., at 1:00 p.m. Washington and Lee hosts Emory & Henry College Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. ODAC contest.
