BANGOR, Maine – The Gallaudet University football team captured a 13-6 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) win over Husson University on the road Saturday. The victory is the first conference win for the Bison (3-2, 1-1 ECFC) this season and the first official NCAA win for Gallaudet coach Chuck Goldstein.
Gallaudet leaped into the national spotlight earlier this week with its YouTube tip drill interception play from the Castleton State College game (September 25) that blew up to over 1.7 million views in several days and an appearance on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays. The Bison put the national attention on hold Saturday and focused their attention on Husson.
Gallaudet scored the game's first 13 points, seven courtesy of senior kicker Justin Wilson (Carmichael, Calif.). Wilson booted a 32-yard field goal through the uprights at the 4:42 mark in the first quarter to finish off a five play, 22-yard drive. The Bison tacked on a touchdown before the half when junior fullback Mike Gimeli (Deer Park, N.Y.) ran in from three yards out. The touchdown drive took 10 plays and covered 76 yards. Wilson converted on the extra-point attempt as GU led 10-0 at the break.
Wilson added a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter at the 5:19 mark to cap Gallaudet's scoring in the game. GU fumbled away the first two possessions it had the ball in the fourth quarter. The last of four fumbles in the game led to Husson's only points.
Husson (0-5, 0-2 ECFC) scored a touchdown with 6:25 left in the game when Justin Lindie scored from 23 yards out on a run. The Eagles extra-point attempt failed.
Gallaudet finished the game with 331 rushing yards and zero passing yards. The Bison defense held Husson to 243 total offensive yards (164 yards on the ground). GU held the ball for over 34 minutes.
Gimeli finished with a game-high 148 rushing yards on 18 carries (8.2 average per carry) with a long of 72 yards. Senior quarterback Jimmy Gardner (St. Augustine, Fla.) carried the ball 26 times for 130 yards.
The Bison defense was led by senior linebacker Joshua Doudt (Medina, Ohio) who finished the game with eight tackles and two sacks for a loss of 13 yards. Junior John Van Wey (Alexandria, Va.) recorded Gallaudet's other two sacks for a loss of eight yards. Gallaudet made eight tackles for a loss 53 yards against the Eagles. The Bison also picked off Husson three different times.
GU will next travel to Northfield, Vt., to face defending ECFC champion Norwich University (4-1, 1-1 ECFC) on Saturday, October 9, at Noon.
