Chicago Defeats Denison 36-7 on Homecoming

More news about: Chicago

Returning to action for the first time in three weeks, quarterback Marshall Oium threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as Chicago defeated Denison 36-7 on Homecoming Saturday at Stagg Field.

Oium, who was sidelined with an injury the previous two weeks, completed 11 of 19 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns and was the Maroons' leading rusher with 50 yards and a score on eight carries.

Denison (3-3) took an early 7-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Max Paulus to Shawn Eagle to cap a nine-play, 81-yard drive that included a 56-yard pass from wideout Branden Layer to Andy Carpenter. Paulus was 9 of 27 for 92 yards on the afternoon.

Chicago (4-2) evened the score at the 4:04 mark of the first quarter when Oium hooked up with Dee Brizzolara on a 6-yard scoring strike.

The Maroons took the lead for good when junior Danny Polaneczky blocked a punt deep inside Big Red territory and recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. The blocked punt was the Maroons' fourth in their last two games and the third resulting in a touchdown.

Chicago added a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second stanza as it took a 27-7 lead. Francis Adarkwa scored from 5 yards out at the 10:48 mark before Oium took a quarterback keeper 27 yards with 1:24 to go in the half.

The Maroons capped the scoring in the third quarter with a safety at the 11:24 mark and a 22-yard strike from Oium to Clay Wolff with 7:31 left.

Chicago produced nine sacks on the day, three from Michael Cifor and two from Matt Sargent.

Chicago held the Big Red to minus-19 yards rushing and 148 total yards as it won its fourth straight game at Stagg Field dating back to last year. In three home games this season, the Maroons have outscored their rivals by a 122-37 margin.
