St. Norbert 30, Carroll 6
WAUKESHA, Wis. - St. Norbert College remained in contention for
its first Midwest Conference championship since 2007 with a 30-6
win over Carroll University at Schneider Stadium.
The Green Knights (4-3) moved into a five-way tie for second-place in the MWC standings at 4-2. St. Norbert, Carroll, Grinnell, Illinois College and Monmouth are all one game behind Ripon with three weeks left to play.
St. Norbert led 7-6 after the first quarter, breaking open the game with two second-quarter touchdown. Rob Berger scored on a 3-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter for a 13-6 lead, a drive set up by a Carroll fumble in its own end.
The Green Knights boosted their advantage to 20-6 with 6:05 left before halftime on a 2-yard plunge by John Weninger on fourth-and-goal. St. Norbert converted on two fourth downs on the drive, which lasted nine plays covering 59 yards.
Following a scoreless third quarter, St. Norbert made it a three-possession game with a 30-yard field goal by Roger Nault with 12:27 left. Berger's 60-yard bomb to Joe Green with 6:30 left closed out the scoring.
St. Norbert, which did not have any turnovers, put up 355 yards of total offense on the Midwest Conference's top-ranked defense, and became the first team to score at least 30 points on Carroll this year. Berger completed 14 of 25 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown and also rushed 13 times for 42 yards and one touchdown. Weninger rushed 23 times for 45 yards and two touchdown. Green hauled in five receptions for 133 yards and one score.
Carroll put up just 178 yards of total offense, with 69 coming on the ground. Pioneer quarterback Chris Casper completed 11 of 22 passes for 72 yards. Joe Beckstrand, who scored Carroll's lone touchdown with a 3-yard run in the first quarter, rushed 18 times for 82 yards.
