SALEM, Virginia - Defensive end Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) and linebacker Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) led six Wesley College football student-athletes on the Division Three Football Senior Classic Preseason All-America Team.
The duo was chosen to the South First Team Defense, while a trio were named to the All-South Second Team. Tackle James Buettner (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco) earned a place on the second team offense, while linebacker Jeff Morgan (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) and defensive tackle Paul Gilstrop (Lindenwold, N.J./Paul VI) were named second team defenders.
Quarterback Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) was picked as a South Honorable Mention.
Only 2011 seniors are eligible for the Division Three Football Senior Classic All-American Team.
In 2010, Mayes notched 17.5 sacks and 32.5 tackles for loss in 13 games to go along with 45 solo tackles and three forced fumbles. Asiedu made 78 stops, batted down 10 passes and had 10.5 tackles for loss. Morgan ended the year with 82 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and three interceptions. Gilstrop made over 60 tackles, including 11.5 for loss. Buettner was instrumental on the offensive side of the ball, blocking for a unit that produced a 1,000-yard rusher, a 1,000-yard receiver and allowed just 1.15 sacks per game. McSweeney was lost for the season on just the second play of the year's first game, but was the ECAC South Player of the Year as a junior.
So far this summer, Mayes has also been named to All-America teams by D3football.com, The Sporting News, Lindy's and Consensus Draft Services. Asiedu and Morgan joined him on the D3football.com and Lindy's squads, while Asiedu, Gilstrop and Buettner were also honored by CDS.
Last season, Wesley advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the sixth straight year and moved on to the national semifinals for the fourth time during the run. The Wolverines, who won the Lambert Meadowlands and ECAC Team of the Year Awards, also picked up their sixth consecutive ACFC title and ninth overall, finishing the year with a 12-1 record.
Wesley opens the 2011 season when East Texas Baptist visits Scott D. Miller Stadium on September 3.
