The Case Western Reserve University Spartans open the 2011 campaign at local-rival John Carroll University on Saturday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights. The Spartans finished last season at 8-2 overall and 1-2 in the University Athletic Association. During the past four seasons, CWRU has a remarkable overall record of 39-5. John Carroll finished last season at 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference with four wins in its final six contests.
The Spartans and Blue Streaks have met 18 times on the gridiron with John Carroll holding a 9-8-1 lead in the all-time series. The two squads met last season for the first time since 1988 and Case was victorious 30-13 at home. JCU won the previous meeting in 1988, 27-10, at then Finnigan Field in Cleveland. The first ever meeting was a 0-0 tie at Case in 1970 and the two squads met annually until 1985.
Case Western Reserve is coached by Greg Debeljak, who is in his eighth season in 2011 with a 52-22 (.703) record. Debeljak led the Spartans to three consecutive undefeated (10-0) regular seasons from 2007-09 with back-to-back-to-back NCAA postseason appearances and UAA titles. Since the beginning of the 2007 season, Case Western Reserve has posted an outstanding overall record of 39-5, earning Debeljak and his staff the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year award for three straight seasons (2007-09). In addition, Case has been ranked in the AFCA top 25 in each of the past four seasons.
John Carroll is coached by Regis Scafe who enters his 13th season with a 77-47 record with the Blue Streaks. The 2011 season-opener will make Scafe the longest tenured coach in JCU history. He has an overall head coaching record of 93-83 in 17 seasons and led the Blue Streaks to 10 consecutive seasons with a .500 or better record prior to the 2009 season.
Both Greg Debeljak and Regis Scafe have a very strong connection to their opponent this week. Debeljak graduated from John Carroll in 1988 and coached for 12 seasons on the Blue Streak staff. In addition, Debeljak was a standout football and basketball player at JCU and held the school basketball record for assists (13) in a single game. Ironically, Scafe graduated from Case Western Reserve in 1971 and was the Spartans' head coach from 1994-98 with a 16-34 overall mark. Most of Debeljak's current coaching staff served with him at JCU as a part of Scafe's staff.
The Spartans opened the 2010 season with a 30-13 victory versus the Blue Streaks on Saturday, September 4 at Case Field.
