Albion's Second Half Rally Falls Short

More news about: Albion

INDIANAPOLIS – Albion College scored touchdowns on consecutive possessions in the second half to pull within two scores and it drove deep into Butler University territory on its last possession, but the Britons were not able to recover from a sizeable halftime deficit. Albion opened the season with a 31-17 loss.

Albion controlled the ball for nearly 20 minutes in the second half. Clinton Orr, who finished with 85 yards on 24 carries, scored the Britons' first touchdown on a 2-yard plunge late in the third quarter. Spencer Krauss hooked up with Brian Spencer for a 16-yard score with 12 minutes to play.

Albion was looking to pull within a touchdown late in the fourth. Krauss completed a 12-yard strike to J.C. Cruse and two throws to Zach Brewer for 34 yards and a pass interference penalty helped the Britons move the ball to the Butler 16. The drive bogged down, Albion turned the ball over on downs and Butler went on to kill the remaining 3:56.

"We played a lot of young players and it took them a while to get used to the tempo of the collegiate game," Head Coach Craig Rundle, '74, said. "I like our team. The guys calmed down at halftime and responded well."

Krauss completed 21 passes for 189 yards. Brewer, Cruse, and Wes Dolen caught five passes apiece, while Spencer finished with four receptions.

Linebackers John Lesinski and Tony Brown led the defense with 12 and 8 tackles, respectively. Brown's interception on the first play of the fourth quarter set up Albion's final score.

Albion will take the field against Wheaton College, ranked eighth in D3football.com's preseason poll, next Saturday.
