Fulton, Mo. – The top passing and top rushing football teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) clash when Westminster College hosts Martin Luther College this Saturday on Priest Field.
Westminster (2-0, 1-0 UMAC) tops the UMAC and is 19th nationally among NCAA Division III schools at 303 yards passing a game, and is tops in the UMAC and 13th nationally in scoring offense at 43.5 points a game. Martin Luther (0-2, 0-1 UMAC) tops the UMAC and is 17th nationally at 263 rushing yards a game.
Individually, senior receiver Carl Givens (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade) is tied for fourth nationally and leads the league at 18 points a game, while leading the league in receptions a game (9) and receiving yards a game (129.5). Sophomore quarterback Scott Rodgers (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) is ninth nationally and leads the league in passing efficiency (200.02).
Defensively, the Blue Jays top the UMAC in total defense (252), punt returns (17.3), turnover margin (+3) and tackles for loss (9). Senior linebacker Gus Lyles (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves), who was named UMAC Defensive Player of the Week for his play last Saturday, is tied for ninth nationally and shares the conference lead in interceptions at one a game and tops the UMAC in tackles for loss at two a game.
