B-W Falls Late to Capital, 14-11, in the 34th Annual Lee Tressel Shrine Classic

BEREA, OHIO-- Senior quarterback Chase Carris threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Matt White with 15 seconds left in the game as Capital University upset Baldwin-Wallace  College, 14-11, today (Saturday, September 24, 2011) in an Ohio Athletic Conference in the 34th Annual Lee Tressel Shrine Classic on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium.
 

With its win, Capital improved to 2-1 and 2-0 in the OAC while B-W fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.  B-W led 5-0 after one quarter, 11-0 at halftime and at the end of three periods.

Following a B-W fumble at the Capital five yard-line with 2:17 left in the game, the Crusaders traveled 95 yards in 13 plays with Carris hitting White with the winning TD toss. Carris then tossed a 2-point conversion throw to White to complete the comeback.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 13:37 mark of the first quarter when sophomore wide rteceiver/ defensive back Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) blocked a Capital punt and the ball rolled through the endzone for a safety and a 2-0 lead. The safety followed a nine-yard quarterback sack of Crusader sophomore QB Ryan Kremchek by B-W senior defensive end Derron Hamilton (Euclid).

B-W increased its lead to 5-0 at the 8:55 mark of the first period when senior placekicker Dave Cantu (Amherst/ Marion Steele) booted a 20-yard field goal. The score was set up by senior safety Corey Hildreth (Massillon/ Washington) who intercepted a Kremchek pass at the Capital 32 yard-line and returned it 27 yards to the CU 5.

The Jackets scored the only points of the second stanza when junior QB Ryan O'Rourke (Avon) threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior All-OAC tight end Aaron Hurd (Tiffin/ Columbuan), but B-W missed its PAT kick to lead 11-0 at the intermission. The scoring play capped a 9-play and 93-yard drive in 1:11.

The Crusaders closed the gap to 11-6 at the 12:04 mark of the final quarter when they traveled 90 yards in 12 plays in 4:25 when senior QB Chase Carris ran two yards to paydirt. Capital was unsuccessful in its two-point conversion pass as B-W senior All-OAC defensive back Matt Bowen (Tiffin/ Columbian) broke up the play.

The Crusader offense was led by Carris who completed 21-of-30 for 239 yards and one TD and he ran for the other TD. Senior RB Josh Anderson led the Crusader running game with 41 yards in 11 carries. White and sophomore WR Alex Coleman were the top receivers with seven catches each. White had seven for 98 yards and the game-winning TD and Coleman had seven for 57 yards. The defense was led by sophomore cornerback Antioine Roberts with 11 tackles and senior linebacker Troy Spiker had 10 and was the Capital Shriner Player of the Game.

O'Rourke paced the B-W offense by completing 21-of-31 passes for 225 yards with the TD to Hurd but threw two interceptions. Junior running back Tyler Lohr (Kent/ Roosevelt) led all runners with 90 yards in 22 attempts. Sophomore wide receiver Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton/ Midview) led all B-W receivers with six catches for 73 yards. The defense was led by senior LB J.J. Laseak (Mentor) with 10 tackles. Senior defensive end Derron Hamilton (Euclid) had five tackles and 3.5 QB sacks to earn the B-W Shriner Player of the Game award.
 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next October 1 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play OAC-rival Marietta College at Don Drumm Stadium at 1:30 p.m.  the next home game is on Saturday, Oct. 15 when B-W hosts 9th-ranked Ohio Northern University for Homecoming at 2:00 p.m.
