TACOMA, Wash. – A record-breaking week has landed Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors for Adam Kniffin and Tieler Souza. Kniffin earned the offensive weekly honor and Souza earned the specialist weekly honors.
Kniffin was also named to the D3football.com Team of the Week presented by Scoutware.
Kniffin, a preseason All-American, tied and broke the school record for career touchdown receptions with three TDs against Whittier. His trio of TDs gave him 22 touchdown receptions in his career, breaking Dan Thurston's record of 21 TDs from 1966-69. Kniffin hauled in 12 catches on the day for a career-high 216 yards – only six yards shy of the Loggers single game record.
Kniffin also leads Division III with 12 receptions per game, which is tied for the highest mark among all NCAA divisions. His 130.33 receiving yards per game also ranks 14th in Division III.
Souza, a freshman, had the Loggers first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2006 and broke the NCAA Division III record for kickoff return yards in a game with 307 yards. In the second quarter, Souza returned a kick 93 yards to bring the Loggers back within one point of the Poets at 21-20.
George Ka'ai will take his place under center this week for the Loggers as the nation's leader in total offense with 373 yards per game and completions per game with 34.67. He also ranks second with 357 passing yards per game.
The Loggers head to Puyallup, Wash. to take on Pacific Lutheran this week to open NWC play. Last year, the Loggers pushed the Lutes to the waning moments of the game as PLU hit a 50-yard field goal with time expiring to take home a win. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
