Delaware Valley 58, Stevenson 13

More news about: Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College freshman quarterback Aaron Wilmer completed 16 of 22 passes for 222 yards and a school record-tying five touchdowns as the Aggies scored 58 unanswered points and defeated visiting Stevenson University, 58-13, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game.

Delaware Valley, the three-time defending conference champions, improved its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in league action. The Mustangs, who are in their first year of intercollegiate football, fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.

Wilmer saw just two and a half quarters of action and completed touchdown passes of 20, 9, 13, 20 and 15 yards. He tied the mark previous set by four different players and led an Aggie offense that finished the afternoon with 32 first downs and 542 total yards.

Meanwhile, the Delaware Valley defense limited Stevenson to just 98 yards over the first three quarters and 194 yards for the game. The unit also forced four turnovers to give them 12 takeaways over the three conference games.

The Mustangs took an early 6-0 lead as they took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards on six plays. Fullback Patrick Diamond came up with the big play as he caught a screen pass, broke a few tackles and went 46 yards down to the Aggie five-yard line. After a pair of Emmanuel Paul runs put the ball at the one, Diamond finished off the drive with a plunge into the end zone. Garrett Perau's extra-point attempt clanked off the upright, but Stevenson still had the early lead with 11:51 on the clock.

However, it was all Delaware Valley from there with both sides of the ball dominating. After the defense allowed 60 total yards on Stevenson's opening drive (the other five yards came on a penalty), they permitted just one net yard and forced four turnovers over the Mustangs' next 19 plays.

The offense responded quickly as it took the ensuing kickoff and had a 65-yard scoring drive of its own. Wilmer capped the drive by hitting Lewis Vincent for a 20-yard touchdown strike. Jake Sobchak added the point-after for a 7-6 advantage with 8:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Later in the quarter, Delaware Valley embarked on an eight-play, 50-yard drive that culminated in another Wilmer-to-Vincent connection, this one for a nine-yard touchdown. The Aggies got the ball right back as Terrance Osborne picked off a Stevenson pass and returned it 11 yards to the Mustang 43. Five plays later, tailback Kyle Schuberth was in the end zone from four yards out for a 21-6 lead just 65 seconds in the second quarter.

Delaware Valley then struck for 23 points in a six-minute span to build a 44-6 lead. Wilmer tossed his third scoring pass of the game, this one a 13-yard completion to Chris Ruiz with 8:12 left in the half. The Aggies' Chris McCabe then recovered a fumble in Stevenson territory and Sobchak booted a 31-yard field goal with 5:06 to go.

Then on the Mustangs' second play on the ensuing drive, Delaware Valley cornerback Troy Green picked off a C.J. Hopson pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Pete O'Hara then intercepted a Jared Jorgenson pass and it eventually led to a 20-yard scoring pass from Wilmer to tight end James Norton with 2:15 remaining in the first half.

The Delaware Valley starting offense was on the field for just two possessions in the third quarter and both drives resulted in touchdowns. The first was an eight-play, 74-yard drive off the opening kickoff and ended with a seven-yard scoring run by Schuberth. Wilmer then tied the school mark by teaming with Norton for a 15-yard touchdown and a 58-6 lead with 6:24 to go in the third quarter.

Stevenson put the final points on the board with 8:26 remaining in the fourth as Diamond capped a 10-play, 55-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown.

Schuberth went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the third consecutive week as the sophomore netted 119 yards and the two scores on 15 carries. Tyler Neal added 61 yards on 10 carries. Norton and Vincent combined for seven catches for 108 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, All-American end Mike Jaskowski led a balanced effort with five tackles and two sacks.

Hopson, Jorgenson and Justin Bittner combined to go 12-for-34 for 123 yards and three interceptions for the Mustangs. Diamond carried the ball 13 times for 29 yards and two scores. Donnell Brown and JaRon Cody had 11 and 10 tackles respectively.
