Foresters' Offensive Explosion in Win at Lawrence Nets 56 Points, 610 Yards

More news about: Lake Forest

The Lake Forest College football team defeated host Lawrence University 56-38 on Saturday. Forester junior quarterback Pete Scaffidi tied his own team record with five touchdown passes in the contest and he also set the single-season mark in just the seventh game of the year.

Scaffidi completed 17 of 29 passes for a career-high 367 yardsin the contest. He is now just eight completions and 207 passing yards shy of the program records in those categories. He also scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season.

A team record-tying three of Scaffidi's touchdown passes went to senior wide receiver Kevin Davis, who caught five passes for 152 yards on Saturday. His 10 touchdown receptions on the season are just two shy of the program record and his 946 receiving yards are 56 away from the mark. Junior wideout Austin Sobey hauled in five passes for 80 yards and his ninth touchdown of the year and classmate Rocky Al-Mutawa also caught a touchdown pass.

The Foresters' running game was also effective, amassing a season-high 239 yards. Junior tailback Al Mitchell set career-highs with 27 carries and 127 yards and scored his fifth touchdown of the year. Sophomore Alec Howe's 14 carries and 81 yards were also career-highs and he scored his first career touchdown.

Lawrence was forced to punt on its first two possessions while the Foresters scored on a 54-yard pass to Davis and a 15-yarder to Sobey. The Vikings got on the scoreboard on a 5-yard run and the score was 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams scored twice in the second quarter, the Foresters on a 25-yard run by Mitchell and a 27-yard pass to Davis. Lawrence reached the end zone on an 18-yard pass and added a 40-yard field goal, making the score 28-17 at halftime.

Lake Forest started the second half with a 13-play, 71-yard drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Mutawa. Lawrence also scored a touchdown on its first drive of the period and attempted an onside kick but failed to recover. Scaffidi finished off the short drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Forester sophomore Tanner Daugherty recorded his first career interception on the Vikings' next possession and, four plays later, Scaffidi connected with Davis for a 36-yard score that gave the visitors a 49-24 advantage after three quarters.

A 1-yard touchdown by Howe gave Lake Forest 56 points, the team's highest single-game total since a 56-32 victory over Lawrence in 1999. The Vikings finished off the scoring on Saturday with a pair of touchdown passes.

The Foresters' 257 points in seven games this season are already the third-highest total in team history, trailing only the 269 points the 1999 squad scored in 10 games and the 273 posted by the 2002 Midwest Conference championship team in 11 contests.

Lake Forest will look to surpass those marks next Saturday at Knox College. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
