Choctaws Drop ASC Home Opener to Sul Ross, 75-42
CLINTON, Miss. --- In the highest-scoring football game in Mississippi College history, it was Sul Ross State that came away victorious with a 75-42 win on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
The 117 points bested the previous mark of 101 points, set in 2011 with a 63-38 loss to McMurry in the final game of the season.
The Choctaws (1-4, 0-2) got their offense going in the game with 533 total yards, led by sophomore quarterback Jonathon Redd with a career-high 338 passing yards and four touchdowns.
The running game got going, as well, with 160 total yards. Freshman Denzel Dabon led the way with 73 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Junior Josh Johnson chipped in 40 yards and a score on 10 rushes.
Senior wide receiver Alex Archer had a big day with career highs in receptions (8), yards (166) and touchdowns (2). Junior Les Lemons was also productive with 57 receiving yards, 35 passing yards and 12 rushing yards in the contest.
The Lobos (2-3, 1-1 ASC) also had a potent offense in the game with 787 total yards, led by senior running back Dominique Carson with 209 rushing yards and three scores on 27 carries. Carson also caught five passes for 149 yards and one score.
Senior quarterback A.J. Springer had a big day, throwing for 432 yards and six touchdowns. Four different receivers caught a scoring throw with Lee Carothers and Cordrick Mobley hauling in two.
Sophomore Alandas Hardy had a team-high 13 tackles, while junior Austin Gray and freshman Mitchell Hardy each had 10 stops. The Choctaws had six tackles for loss in the contest, led by junior Keith Villafranco and freshman Brooks Villarreal with a sack apiece. Junior Stephen Miner had eight tackles and two for loss.
Johnny Stewart and Casey Sonier each had seven tackles to lead the Lobos.
The Choctaws were plagued by turnovers with three interceptions and one lost fumble. The Lobos had their troubles, as well, with 15 penalties for 143 yards.
