Big Blue Football Falls in Overtime

More news about: Millikin

Millikin tied the game with 15 seconds left to play on a 27 yard field goal by Austin Brettschneider.

In the overtime period, the Millikin defense came up big stopping Elmhurst on its first three plays for minus two yards.  David Tomis hit a 44 yard field goal to give the Bluejays a 45-42 advantage.

On Millikin's possession, the Big Blue quickly moved to inside the Bluejays' 10 yard line.  On third and one from the six yard line, Millikin's Justin Brooks tried to go up and over the pile for the first down.  Elmhurst's Marvin Carr jarred the ball loose and Jamall Lane made the recovery stopping the Millikin possession and sealing the victory for Elmhurst.

The game matched the drama of the last five meeting between the two schools with the lead changing hands several times including twice in the fourth quarter.

Millikin had a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to two Sean Dunning touchdown runs.  Dunning scored from 10 yards out for the game's first touchdown and from 11 yards out to answer a three yard Josh Williams touchdown from the Bluejays.

Elmhurst then took control in the second quarter outscoring Millikin 21-7.

Elmhurst got three second quarter touchdown runs from Scottie Williams from five yards, 99 yards, and three yards.  Millikin's second quarter score came from quarterback Matt Holmes who scored on a five yard run.

Elmhurst went up 35-20 in the third quarter on another Williams three yard run.

The Big Blue then began to rally starting with a 40 yard touchdown pass from Holmes to Jake Palmer.  The play was a short swing pass that had Palmer zipping across the Bluejay defense.  Millikin pulled to within two at 35-33 on a Holmes to Erik Tobey nine yard pass.

Millikin took the lead half way through the fourth quarter when Holmes hit freshman Sean Maloney on a nine yard touchdown pass.  Millikin's try for two failed and it was 39-35 Big Blue.

Elmhurst answered back on a 33 yard pass from Joe Furco to Vince Gabrys to go up 42-39.

Holmes had a big day for Millikin rushing for 170 yards on 27 carries with one touchdown and was 28-40 passing for 305 yards and three scores.  Tobey led the Millikin receivers with 13 catches for 126.

Williams was the offensive star for Elmhurst with four touchdowns and 229 yards rushing on 32 carries.  Furco was 14-24 passing for 164 yards.

Millikin had 557 yards in total offense while Elmhurst racked up 452 yards.

Millikin was hurt by penalties again this week.  Millikin was flagged eight times for 93 yards.

Christian Silva was Millikin's top defender with 13 tackles.  Freshman Sam Duprey had 12.

Lane had 14 stops for the Bluejays while Wayne Tuckson added 13 including three tackles for a loss.

Elmhurst is now 6-1 and 3-1 in the CCIW while Millikin falls to 3-4, 0-4.

Millikin plays at Wheaton on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
