Guilford Drops Season Finale to Emory & Henry, 38-10

More news about: Guilford

EMORY, Va. – Kyle Boden passed for 323 yards and four touchdowns in Emory & Henry College's 38-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win over Guilford College Saturday in both teams' season finale.

Joe Vaughn added 99 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Wasps (6-4, 3-4 ODAC) scored 38 unanswered points for their ninth win in 10 games with Guilford.

Guilford (5-5, 4-3 ODAC) ended their best season since 2007 in a three-way tie for third place in the ODAC standings.

The Quakers grabbed an early 7-0 lead when Mike Williams scored on a four-yard run less than two minutes into the game. The Quakers made three more trips inside the Wasps' 30-yard line in the quarter, but Emory & Henry yielded only a 30-yard field goal to Tyler Hunt, which made it a 10-0 game after one quarter.

The momentum changed late in the second quarter as Emory & Henry scored on successive drives. Vaughn picked up a fumbled Wasps' snap on the Quakers' two-yard line and ran it in for a touchdown, capping an eight-play, 90-yard drive. Boden's 79-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Kirby gave Emory & Henry a 14-10 lead 3:31 before halftime. A botched punt snap resulted in a Wasps' safety and a 16-10 Emory & Henry halftime advantage.

Emory & Henry picked up where it left off in the third quarter as Boden connected with Cleo Cooper on a six-yard touchdown pass, capping the first drive of the season half. After the teams traded turnovers, Boden found Sam Edmonds on a 47-yard scoring play. The two-point conversion pass to Vaughn opened a 31-10 third-quarter advantage, which Guilford could never threaten.

Boden completed passes to 10 different receivers, including Kirby, who finished with seven catches for 156 yards. Vaughn added 80 receiving yards on six receptions and had 179 all-purpose yards. Paul Forney's nine tackles led the Wasps' defense. Tyler Houk and DeMikeal Burse both ended Guilford scoring chances with interceptions in the end zone. The Wasps also kept Guilford scoreless on three of five trips inside the red zone.

Guilford quarterback Matt Pawlowski completed 26-of-46 passes for 323 yards, but was intercepted twice and sacked six times. Fellow rookie Adam Smith made nine catches for 170 yards, both game highs. Chad Christopher and Austen Thompson both made five receptions and Williams finished with 60 rushing yards on 16 carries. Hunter English made a game-high 11 tackles on defense. Jaylan Martin added 10 stops and an interception, both career highs.
