WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Head Football Coach Scott Yoder announced the captains for his 2013 squad Monday morning.

Rising seniors Sean BlackmanPreston Funk and Byron Mitchell, along with rising junior David Bell, have been selected in a vote of their teammates to serve as 2013 captains.

Each member of the current team had the opportunity to vote for up to four players to take on a leadership role this coming fall.

Players were required to provide the reason why they were voting for a particular player and all ballots had to be signed to be considered valid.

Blackman, Funk and Mitchell all play on the defensive side of the ball with Blackman playing cornerback, Funk on the line and Mitchell at safety.

Bell is a wide receiver while he and Mitchell handle punt and kick return duties, respectively.

Blackman was a third team All-ODAC selection with Mitchell earning second team honors after grabbing first team All-USA South accolades in 2011.

Mitchell is the second member of his family to be named captain of an SU team. His identical twin brother, Bryce Mitchell, is the captain of the SU basketball team.

Byron and Bryce's older brother, Brandon, was a football captain at fellow ODAC member Bridgewater College.

"These guys have bought into our program," Yoder, who took over as head coach in January, said.

"They have shown great leadership in the classroom, in the community and the weight room. I look forward to working with them this coming season."
