NORTH MANCHESTER, IN. – Manchester University was picked for a third-place finish on the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason football coaches poll, released Wednesday, Aug. 7.
The Spartans are coming off a historic 2012 season in which they finished 6-4 with a current six-game win string that ranks fourth in NCAA Division III. The win skein led MU to its first winning season since 1997 and was the program's longest since the 1968 and 1969 squads combined for the same run.
The Spartans, compiling 54 poll points, trailed only preseason favorite Franklin (79 points and seven first-place votes) and second-place selection Hanover (67 points and two first-place votes). Mount St. Joseph, with 45 points, and Rose-Hulman, with 44 points, rounded out the top five.
Manchester University kicks off the 2013 season Thursday, Sept. 5, with its annual non-conference clash against in-state NCAA Division III rival Trine. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Burt Field on MU's campus.
