THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (August 12, 2013) – SUNY Maritime defensive coordinator and USA Football Master Trainer Vincent DiGaetano, along with members of the SUNY Maritime football team and coaching staff, will be on hand this Sunday, August 18 at Reinhart Field to host area youth football players and coaches for a Heads Up Football safety clinic.

The Privateers are using this as an opportunity to reach out to the local community and provide a hands-on approach on the proper techniques of tackling and equipment management. There will be no charge for those attending the clinic.

The event begins at 8 a.m. in Riesenberg Hall on the campus of SUNY Maritime College with an introduction and welcome to the day's events. Among the topics that will be featured include proper equipment fitting and concussion awareness which will be followed by a Heads Up tackling demonstration and drills put on by the SUNY Maritime players on Reinhart Field. The day concludes with an autograph signing by the members of the Privateer football squad.

"The player safety clinics provide a great model to raise the standard of play with an emphasis on player safety," DiGaetano said earlier this summer. "It is an honor to be a part of this revolutionary approach to changing the culture of the game. Working with the youth level coaches is so rewarding as we invest time in the future of football."

Heads Up Football is a comprehensive approach to a better and safer game, encompassing USA Football's accredited Level 1 Coach Certification Course; Heads Up Tackling techniques; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response protocols; and instruction on proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.

Heads Up Tackling is a step-by-step protocol to teach the core principles of the skill and sets a new standard in player safety. The program utilizes five fundamentals through a series of drills to reinforce proper tackling mechanics and teach players how to properly tackle with a focus on reducing helmet contact.
